@@dorkfish1275 ​ Not exactly. The suicide flyers were technically known as special attack squadrons(tokubetsu kogekitai). The term kamikaze came into use for them because that was the intended effect. The imperial navy was looking for a "divine wind" to smash the US pacific fleet, just as the typhoons did to the mongols. It obviously didn't work, but it's ironic that they were on the right track, just a few years ahead of their time. The MXY-7 Ohka purpose built suicide rocket plane was one of the earliest examples of a guided anti ship missile, which define naval warfare today.

Eventually a typhoon came and the Mongolian army retreated. The second time, the Mongolian army also rushed to the great army, but the Japanese side built and prepared a barrier to prevent the landing of the Mongolian army. A typhoon came again where the disease was widespread in the Mongolian army. Japan and Vietnam repelled the Mongolian army.

Fun fact: In September 1945, Typhoon Makurazaki (枕崎台風、 昭和20年台風第16号）caused huge damages to the Hiroshima area, over 2,400 killed and 1,283 went missing. If the Operation Downfall was a go, by the September the U.S. Navy will gathering a giant fleet around the south of Kyushu, which was right on the path of Typhoon Makurazaki. I’m quite sure that Typhoon would brings some serious troubles to those G.I. Joes on the tumbling waves.

Fun fact: The word kamikaze actually comes from this war.When typhoons came and wiped out the Mongolian army, Japanese people didn’t think that it was a coincidence but rather their god(the god that protects Japan) intentionally blowing wind to destroy Mongolian ships.Thats why in ww2 Japanese children were taught that Japan wouldn’t lose because even the enemy attacks Japan, the same god would come and save them.Kamikaze roughly means “God’s wind” in English

This failed invasion is where the term "Kamikaze" was coined because of not 1, but 2 Typhoons that consumed the Mongol ships, more Mongols died by the 2 Typhoons than by Japanese warriors. So kiddies, remember that when you hear the word "Kamikaze".

I will add one, but only to say that a sequel set 7 years later involving the Second Mongol Invasion would be the perfect plot. The first failed attempt at full-occupation of Tsushima is impressive enough. At this time the Japanese had learned from the first invasion and built better fortifications and tactics, one of which being night-raids by boat onto ships anchored offshore. If such a game involved Jin leading larger forces as an older and more prestigious Lord Shimura, as well as perfecting shinobi tactics as the real Samurai had, then it would make for a very realistic and exciting extension of the first game, right up until Tsushima's liberation just before the Mongol fleet was decimated by the second Divine Wind; leaving remaining forces stranded and on land to be finished off by the Samurai.

Medieval mongolian scared sea so they took very negative&passive attitude in strategy(ofcourse in their average)...Rather medieval korean generals had active even ferocious attitude to Japan because of their political post which reigned by mongol empire. But they scared sea too and had little konwhow to operate thier naval forces in that time(so korea wii be relentless invaded by wako-the pirates forces in japanese later). When Kamikaze(gods' wind in japanese) took their ships away and Japanese Medieval samurai did extensive counter attack to the invaders, they have no wills to stay anylonger in Kyushuu so they tuned back home. Then, Japan's holy territory would had never been attacked by foreign invaders untill 1850s french and english navy's invade to satsuma and shimonoseki.

No wonder the Japanese refer to the typhoons as "Kamikazi" (Divine Wind). Saved from the Mongols (that had laid waste to every major civilization from China to Persia to Mesopotamia to the Slavic fiefdoms of Eastern Europe) by typhoons not just once, but *TWICE* . The closest thing to that in Western history was when Queen Elizabeth I and England were saved from the Spanish Armada by storms and some clever naval warfare involving fireships.
