I certainly appreciate the Monitor hosting such a gracious and morally committed candidate and citizen. We all have something to learn from his unhurried and sincerely compassionate approach to the pressing issues of our day, and to the time constraints that undermine our natural courtesy and warm respect for one another. Cornel West may have less of a chance as a candidate than Bernie Sanders did, but his voice is contributing much to the direction of the country and to the hope of young people.

I am from Brazil where we know well how American imperialismo works. I believe Dr. West is an amazing chance US has to heal itself internally and externally. What an intellectual: better yet what a human being to have as a president!

The caliber of a candidate like Cornel West is undeniable. I just hope there will be enough time to get the ball rolling to garner the popular support (including mass rallies and $27 buck donations from the grassroots people) and necessary cooperation between all kinds of institutions and social movements into one big movement, like Bernie Sanders was almost able to achieve. I pledge to make my first donation to West's campaign by next month, and maybe join as a volunteer. But it's important to remember that like-minded candidates have to appear and run for office at all levels: local, city, county, state, national... otherwise nothing will get done, no change will take place. One candidate alone can not do everything.

So great to hear more ideas from interesting, intelligent and respectful people who care about the country and that other news agencies have not shared. It's important to have rich conversations about "precious human beings"-- beautiful healing ideas for the country that make us ponder more deeply. We all need to work to eliminate hatred, greed and fear and increase generous hearts, seek deeper love and respect even when it's hard, and confront the impulses of vengeance that bind us, coming from fear.

I'm excited to be hearing more liberal figures who walk the talk, and who are intent on creating the conditions for a renewed American civic life filled with compassion, rather than merely condemning. Unfortunately I hear too many people who cannot be wrong, who then naturally treat others as of they are static objects, not living beings. Dr. West's reference to the quote, "there is no theory worthwhile that prevents us from seeing," I think, is a good insight into his political philosophy going forward.

It is a small sample size (7 comments) , but so far no one as made a comment about West's candidacy for President. All are about West the public intellectual, philosopher, and activist. If that trend continues, does it say something about the public? Is there something that we can learn from this?

At 30:58 West ask - since when have donors and benefactors been able to get together and dictate who would be Presidents of major universities? The answer is that they always could, but may just have never exercised that power. The bottom line is - power reigns supreme. It can be called 'Power Supremacy'. Might doesn't not make it right, but it does give one the right. Sadly, this is the human condition, until we evolve beyond it - mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

So he can’t work with procedures or other primary candidates in the Green Party, but somehow he will work with Congress if elected.

Yeah Dr. West is a great person to have with us in this moment but I think it’s interesting that he repeatedly comes back to the treatment of indigenous peoples and says very little about the enslavement and long and continuing history of genocide against Black people in this country. I have noticed this in many of his recent interviews since he became a presidential candidate.

@Rickelsonnih yeah I think you need to examine exactly what Dr West has been saying. He is amazingly adept at I love everybody word salad. And we need to look into his finances and why he’s been married four or five times. He has no plan for real cash reparations for Foundational Black Americans (Descendants of American Slavery). He is in spite of everything much better than Genocide Joe, RFK Jr, Williamson or any other candidate.

@angepatty. Thank you for your reply to my comment. West is effusive in his concern for the Palestinians. But in the same breath he talks about his Israeli brothers. He can’t have it both ways. These constant disclaimers make his strong statements less believable. He supports the Palestinians. That’s true. And he does speak about the plight of Black Americans but has no plan for real cash reparations for the Descendants of American Slavery. As I said to another person who replied to my comment, West is amazingly adept at I love everybody word salad.
