Ever since K Rool was announced for Smash I assumed Nintendo were trying to put the DK franchise back on track. How naive of me... I just can't do it anymore. I love these games and characters so much, and Nintendo just doesn't give two flying fucks about DKC. I know they're building a theme park, but... I don't think that means we're necessarily getting a new game. Fire Emblem has had six. SIX. full games since we had Tropical Freeze. I don't even know anyone who pays those games, meanwhile one of the most recognisable gaming characters of all times gets FUCK ALL. I can't do this anymore. I'm gonna take a break from all this endless speculation, it's really not healthy.

I think it's honestly because it's too western and not really "theirs". I mean look at the more arcade-like depiction of DK in the movie, and how little the character gets now. I think Nintendo resents the sense that DKC is sort of an "adopted child" filling the shoes of an older son that is no longer with them. I think they want to slowly turn him back into just old DK but know they can't so the best bet is to just drip feed us anything of the series and neglect him. They don't want Rareware DK, but can't have Original DK, and so they're in this weird halfway point where they don't know what to do with him, just like in the Paon days. What really gets me is how Mario Wonder shows mario can now fill DK's niche of being the more creative platformer, so we might go the way of warioland someday. I dislike that idea. Hopefully they get over it soon.

To be fair, Fire Emblem has a reliable home (Intelligent Systems) that besides some experiments (stuff like Pushmo and Codename: STEAM) in the last 13 years literally only has done Fire Emblem and Mario-related stuff. After Wars (the franchise) went into dormancy in 2010, they have been mostly a Fire Emblem and Wario Ware Dev (like, thanks to this change, a lot of people that used to work in Wars now is working on those two franchises). In the other hand, DKC exists in a awkward position where it's reliable home (90s Rareware) not longer exists, and is just moving around Devs in order to get... anything.

Um I think saying Nintendo hates dk is just not true? The simple fact is that the people behind modern dkc are working on Metroid right now. They could definitely get another developer to do dk stuff but it’s not like the dkc team is just sitting around doing nothing

on one hand: it is mario vs donkey kong. on the other: it's the original being remade, NOT another minis-focused game. so like, it's a continuation of donkey kong 94. which is like, a remake of the original original donkey kong. so it's not that bad. i mean, it ISNT a new donkey kong country, but it IS a remake of the continuation of the original arcade donkey kong. so like, monkey paw half-curled? my point is this could have been worse. at least theyre going back to their roots here.

I love Mario vs Donkey Kong. It's one of my favorite series, actually. But it has been way too long since we had a mainline DK platformer and I've been missing them a lot. I'm going to be playing Tropical Freeze on stream for the next few months, but it definitely doesn't fill the hole of having a brand new game to be excited for.

We Donkey Kong fans now officially have our own Federation Force lol I think Nintendo is afraid of handling DK themselves. They seem to think their in house devs absolutely must not touch anything country-related, for whatever reason, like only retro or rare can do that series.

I think the only way this situation could be made slightly better, is if this'll be a new Mario vs. Donkey Kong, but with the gameplay of the first one. I've always found the only game where the player controls Mario, to be much better than the 6 MvDK games where it's an ant farm simulator (March of the Minis does have a few good boss battles, I will admit)

The new DK Game for the Switch might not be what we wanted, but I still have hope a new DKC game is coming. Remember the 2000s right after Microsoft bought Rareware? This is starting to feel like that time all over again. Back then Nintendo didn't seem to know what to do with DK with Rareware gone and they also tried to turn Donkey and Diddy into characters that show up in Mario spin offs and not much else just like they're doing now. But then out of nowhere 2010 came and they gave us DKC Returns! Have faith, if it happened once it can happen again.

It really felt like a Monkey's Paw wish come true. Mario Vs. Donkey Kong for the GBA was a great game, and this remake looks pretty, but it means that Mario is the playable protagonist again and DK is the nonplayable bad guy again.... Silver lining though, at least this keeps people aware of Donkey Kong's plight.

I haven’t played them, but it seems like Mario vs Donkey Kong itself has really drifted away from what it ever was. As I understand it, the first Mario vs Donkey Kong was a successor to DK ‘94. Even if it wasn’t going to be the big new 3D game we’ve wanted, or a new DKC, at least if we had the Arcade style DK truly back it would be SOMETHING. But no, they’re going with the Mini formula. It’s striking to me how stupid executives can be. There’s a tiny ember left in my heart holding out hope that something was misheard or mistranslated, or that the leaker guy was joking. But I’m about to take that banana-flavored black pill on DK if the big next game after all the hype and excitement around the movie and theme park ends up being about the Minis.

I doubt it. Donkey Kong 94 (Gameboy) and Mario vs Donkey Kong (GBA) will be the only titles to focus on that style of platforming. They are dead set on the Mini Mario gameplay.

Given that Pyoro X was using DK gifs from the movie, I thought this Direct would've announced a Donkey Kong movie, since that has been rumored for a while... but a new Mario vs Donkey Kong entry? I mean, it's fine, it's been a while since the last entry, but I was expecting something bigger. For the June Direct, Pyoro X had teased the Super Mario RPG remake, and Super Mario Bros Wonder; two hype and cool games that got their own separate big announcements in the Direct. A new Mario vs Donkey Kong sounds like something that would be announced in those back-to-back announcement sections INBETWEEN the big announcements, like, say, the MK8 BCP Waves. It's not really one of those big titles.
