My father went to school with him and did not like him then and then years later my sister went to the school that was directly connected to the woods where he had buried the body….It was so weird to have such a real connection and when I mean connection I mean like 6° of separation kind of thing from him. This case hit closer to home for me in more than one way. I’m not only a native Kentuckian but my mother and Brenda went to school together. Even though my mom got married right out of high school and moved a few hours south of Louisville, she and Brenda kept in touch for several years after they graduated. Mom, of course kept up with the case as it progressed or lack of. I find it poetic justice of his demise. Thank you so very much. Many blessings.

And then she didn't even tell the police about the rolls of film with the photos. Seems she really didn't want him to be convicted.
@audreymuzingo9333 жыл бұрын
@@kathyjones1576 Well we don't know exactly what she did or didn't tell the police just from one KZbin video, but if this narration is correct it sounds like she did at least tell them that she took photographs. My ears seized onto that fact immediately and I kept waiting to hear any further mention of the photographs, assuming (HOPING) they would come up again at some point. My guess would be that the cops (and both the prosecuting and defending attorneys in the trial) asked her what happened to the photographs, and she would have just said that she gave the film rolls to Melvin. I think it was the police who didn't do a good enough job. They should have done a better search of Melvin's house, and should have coached Mary to get more concrete details documented in that wired conversation. Obviously just talking about a hole in the ground wasn't enough. And even that, what happened when police interrogated him?--If he said he was talking about a safe, didn't they make him show the supposed location and dig to see if there was a safe? WTF!!
@kathyjones15763 жыл бұрын
Yes she said she took pictures of the incident, but she obviously didn't produce the rolls of film because they were not found until the case was over and he had been acquitted. That's what I'm talking about. Did she refuse to? Did she lie and say they were destroyed? Did the police just overlook them because they couldn't find them? It just seems she may have double crossed the police while they were trying to get her to double cross melvin.

A "checklist of torture" --that is as horrific as any detail I have ever heard about any serial killer. And it only makes it worse that Mary, someone without even an ostensible reason to hate Brenda, was willing to witness and participate in all of it, from start to finish. I don't know what kinds of agony Melvin dreamed up for that list, but as fascinating as I find true crime stories in general, for once I am glad to be spared some details. This happened in my hometown, so I remember it well. I'll never understood how the jury acquitted him. His death was pure karma. He tripped and fell, crashing into a table circa 2008. He was living with his son in South Louisville and was charging him enough rent to pay the mortgage on his home! His son must miss him just gor the monthly rent! I hope he's burning in hell, now He only went to prison for the perjury charges. A bit like O.J, he was acquitted of murder, but went to prison on theft charges

@unionjack843 жыл бұрын
I'll also add that the perjury charges came about when he sold his home. The new homeowners hired contractors to do renovation work, and one of the men found a VHS tape (remember those?). Ignotow had recorded his torture of her. She was tried down to a glass coffee table. You heard Ignotow's voice, but never saw his face. He was so shocked by what he saw, he handed the tape over to police. Ignotow took the witness stand/box and stated he did not murder her. Double jeopardy says he can't be tried again for the murder, so he was tried for perjury. Ignotow spend 7-10 year's in Federal prison

Thank you for covering this case, Crime Reel. I live in Louisville Kentucky and the case of Brenda Sue Schaeffer was absolutely tragic. Thanks Allison, let me know what source you found with that fact as I didnt come across it but I would like to know. A few people have said it but I just put the time difference down as it being unlikely that it was the same table (it was 20 years and different owners of the houses). the fact it was a glass coffee table isnt in dispute as that was an amazing co-incidence, I wonder if its an urban myth
@rdwwdr35203 жыл бұрын
So ACTUALLY, double jeopardy protects from being retried for the same crime he was previously tried for (murder) but they can still go after other crimes associated with the same events such as in this case kidnapping, assault, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, abuse of a corpse, not reporting a death and I'm sure many others - even federal charges like violation of civil rights. And all those sentences can be strung together; 10 years here, 5 years there maybe 3 years here and there to add up to a decent sentence when there are 10 crimes. This is why DAs will hold back on some charges to have an avenue to pursue should the first case fail.

I'm adding up front here: Great job on the video, this is the only time I've gone back to this story and you made it clear and concise. This is the very first crime story I ever read. The frustration with what happened put me off any crime stories for a long time. To see a man be found not guilty disgusted me. She leads them to the body and the jury still didn't believe her. The jury played God and decided to ignore some evidence, and stretched the imagination to twist other evidence. I became a proponent of a panel of judges to decide cases instead of juries.

Hello again there CR just wanna point out that I appreciate that you put so much effort into researching these videos but you don't get near the recognition you surely deserve after all you've done entertaining us with your easy on the ears narration but also the fantastic stories that I've never heard of also. Thank you Crime Reel 👍

It took awhile, but karma finally caught up to him. The way he suffered before he died had to be a bit like what he did to her. I think there should be exceptions to the double Jeopardy thing in cases like this. He only confessed because they finally had concrete evidence against him, not because he felt any guilt.
@TheCrimeReel3 жыл бұрын
Very good point there Kathy - i wonder if it will change one day
@kathyjones15763 жыл бұрын
It would be a good thing. He knew, even by confessing, he wouldn't get into any more trouble because of that clause. He was basically thumbing his nose at that girl's family, saying "yeah I did and there's nothing you can do about it now."
@ohthehorror64023 жыл бұрын
Really interesting case, Crimey. I don’t think the double jeopardy rule is fair tho the victims or their families. In cases such as this one, I feel if further key evidence is found, that should be enough for a retrial. Well done again.
@TheCrimeReel3 жыл бұрын
Cheers for that OTH and yes in the Uk they changed the D J rules a few years back to allow for this
@LeeBv99832 жыл бұрын
Well, it takes a unanimous verdict to acquit as it does to convict. If just one juror had done the right things then it would have been a mistrial and he could be tried again. Actually, the jury system is supremely stupid.

There DEFINITELY needs to be an amendment to that double jeopardy law. If they admit guilt or proof without a doubt is found they should be able to be retried.

Ok so I posted about the coffee table karma and yes it’s true! The stories are so varied it’s hard to get a true account now - some say during the assault she was tied to a bed and the glass coffee table while others say she was tied to the coffee table at the end of the ordeal - alive - while they retrieved the chloroform to end her life. This is the most popular story - I also discovered in the ex girlfriends story she actually did say that Brenda was tied to a glass coffee table where she then accepted the fact she was going to die - and lowered her head and wept. I read that and just man it hurt me - how that sick woman could stand there and take 105 pictures of her ex raping and sadistically hurting this poor woman - then to find her helpless and giving up on life - completly naked tied to a fucking glass coffee table - and she has ABSOLUTLY no fucking empathy at all. Makes me so sick. ANYWAYS also something odd to me is they say 20 years later he met his end - like brenda had - at a glass coffee table - but what’s odd is they found his blood all over the apartment - so he fell into the table - got up and walked around and eventually bled to death never calling 911 or trying to bandage his wounds - nothing. Also his family said toward the end he seemed to be mentally Deteriorating quite rapidly - before he died - so they claim perhaps he wasn’t mentally stable and didn’t realize he was about to die. Uhhuh. Sure. My theory - he was deteriating from GUILT AND SHAME for what he did - and I will go as far as to say Brenda may have been haunting that bastard in the end... good. He deserved a slow painful death - still though - His death was far more humane than the way Brenda met her end - at the hands of those two sick monsters - I really hope she did haunt him everyday and every night. Good for you girl! X
