The MV saved the entire Godzilla franchise. KDM confirmed it. Toho were preparing to completely kill the entire franchise after GFW. During an interview with KDM in 2014, Shogo Tomiyama (Producer of all the Millennium Godzilla films) said “The children of Japan didn’t know who Godzilla was. Figures could no longer be found in stores. Adult Godzilla fans were sometimes laughed at and mocked”. During an interview with KDM, Yoshimitsu Banno (Director of vs Hedorah and is the reason the MV exists) said “No new US G movies = No other Toho movies”. Seems like Toho was originally just going to retire the franchise for a couple of years until they saw that Godzilla wasn’t popular anymore. Toys weren’t being sold. Younger generations didn’t even know who Godzilla was. Older generations were being made fun of. They then decided that they were just going to retire the entire Godzilla franchise permanently but then the rights we’re given to Legendary who made 2014 which was a success and it showed Toho that people are still interested in Godzilla and now we have the franchise booming in ways it has never happened before. Basically Toho didn't have confidence in the Godzilla brand anymore, so they licensed out the character to Legendary to see if it could be made to work in the modern era again. And it was a success that not only gave us a new permanent American Godzilla, but ALSO reignited Toho's interest in continuing to push the franchise. The Monsterverse isn't an insult to Godzilla. It's the reason we still have Godzilla at all nowadays! Without the success of the MV we wouldn’t have Shin, Minus 1, SP etc. Love or hate it, the Monsterverse saved Godzilla from that dusty path and deserves respect for that alone. x.com/KDM_Monsters/status/1741067404858315009?s=20 x.com/KDM_Monsters/status/1741059320366665884?s=20 x.com/KDM_Monsters/status/1741059486599487730?s=20 x.com/KDM_Monsters/status/1741103547867873543?s=20

I am not sure if Mr. Tomiyama said it, but I recall someone from Toho stating that Godzilla would lay dormant for at least a 10 years after "Godzilla: Final Wars" in 2004. Ironically, that prediction turned out to be true! Yes, we do have to thank Legendary and specifically Thomas Tull, who was a big Godzilla & Ray Harryhausen fan (he had already remade "Clash of the Titans" for Legendary in 2010).
@Kaiju-bm4ts11 ай бұрын

@@Kaiju-bm4ts Yes, I am pretty sure it was a coincidence for that exact 10 year gap between "Godzilla: Final Wars" & "Godzilla 2014". The Monsterverse, so far, has been respectful of Godzilla. It emphasized Godzilla, not as a monster, but as a force of nature in a world of other creatures, having to coexist with humanity. The Monsterverse’s Godzilla was portrayed as a lonely antihero, whom Dr. Serizawa believes has a purpose in promoting global balance. I love Godzilla. He is, as author William Tsutsui (author of Godzilla On My Mind)observed that drunken uncle who comes in to visit and raise hell from time to time. Some will say that Godzilla had become humanized. But, isn’t a beast of some kind in all of us? The Gorgo toy is beautifully designed. I would love to have one larger than the one you have previewed. An 18-24 inch figure would be great for collectors.

Well said, Jacob. Agreed on all points... As an OG Goji fan, I too appreciate and love all eras in all forms the franchise has been and currently is. Almost two decades ago as a fan I found myself saddened, but in total agreement with Shogo Tomiyama's post Final Wars statement. With "G:FW"'s lack lustre box office performance and Toho's wave pool being dismantled and paved into a parking lot, I almost expected that to be the case. He also definitively said that *if* Godzilla was brought out of its forced retirement, that vision would be left to the next generation of Japanese film makers. I was never so glad when I heard that Thomas Tull and Brian Rogers secured the rights to the character for Legendary Pictures. Despite Godzilla's limited screen time in the 2014 film, I hoped that it would be the basis for a new direction and a solid franchise. It happened. Five films and one TV series later, The MonsterVerse lives. And, Toho is back in great form... Long may they run!

The Monsterverse Godzilla is literally my favourite incarnation of the character. He truly defines the title “King Of The Monsters” as well as representing himself to be this dominant figure who views the entire planet as his territory. He fights whoever or whatever is disrupting the balance of nature. His design is absolutely badass, majestic, neat, mountainous, and hench. He’s a literal tank. I love how they gave him facial expressions, like you could see his brows moving, his hunched snout, his jawline, etc. Lastly, his roar being an elongated version of the iconic Godzilla roar was the perfect match for such a Godzilla model. Its so haunting, epic, empowering, impactful, kingly, otherworldly, iconic and of course, majestic. So therefore I’d prefer Monsterverse Godzilla to be the FACE of the franchise. I do enjoy other Godzilla films, especially Minus One, but MV Goji truly defined himself to the extent that he inspires me to be strong, brave, and courageous.

Sure, they might have seen a couple of the other ones, but I think a good chunk of them are the sort of people who wouldn't really have considered themselves fans of the franchise. But because we live in a world where cynicism is considered cool and realistic and idealism is seen as boring and naive, the anything where Godzilla or other kaiju aren't just causing wanton destruction is just boring, schlocky baby stuff in their eyes or actively spitting in Japan's face for not being an analogy to the horrors of the nuclear bomb again. And they will, of course, either ignore or just dismiss the fact that Toho were the ones who made that change in the first places, because acknowledging that would be inconvenient for their message.

As many others here are pointing out, we have Yoshimitsu Banno to thank for his relentless efforts, after retiring from Toho, to realize an extravagant cinematic revival of Godzilla vs. Hedorah albeit in new and exciting form and film/video formats. As mentioned, these efforts directly led to the Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse and all of its its implications for the Godzilla franchise. It was the greatest of honors for me to work centrally with Banno-san during the beginning and middle stages of these post-retirement efforts. I for one would still like to think that it could be possible somehow, for Godzilla and Hedorah to battle again in a IMAX feature film or the like.

MonsterVerse Godzilla is the GOAT even over Heisei. I know that sounds sacrilegious but I believe it saved the entire franchise and kaiju movies.

The legit only reason why Toho still stand today or to even make minus one.
@Kasar_Logic11 ай бұрын
you do realise toho isn't just godzilla right? They mainly distribute TV programs aswell as commercial films in Japan, also owning many subsidiary companies. So it's a stretch to say they only stand today cause of the mv, the minus one point is true though

This is amazing. When I was young and in Elementary school it was around the final years of the Millennium Era, I was in about 2nd or 3rd grade when Final Wars came out. I used to be made fun of in school for bringing my Godzilla figures to play with at recess or bringing in Godzilla movies to get my class to watch on movie days. When Final Wars came out I was depressed because I thought that was it for Big G. I always used to say "The king will return someday" and no one at all took me seriously and wrote me off as a delusional super fan. But then 2014 came out and it changed everything. Some of my friends who used to be the kids who teased me about it back in school now love him as a character and have respect and admiration for the movies and franchise. Now they ask me to go see the new movies with them so i can explain all the references. Just the complete 180 the monster verse gave the Godzilla franchise is nothing to shrug off. That stuff is real as it gets and I'll forever be thankful to Legendary and Gareth Edwards for resurrecting my all time favorite character and giving Toho a newfound confidence in their leading character. I'm also further thankful to Toho for choosing to come back themselves because without 2014 and Legendary, we wouldn't have seen Godzilla slap Hollywood in the face and shock the world like he just recently has. Long Live the King of the Monsters!

I’ve always been a Godzilla fan I remember watching the old movies as well as the 1998 version but it was the Monsterverse that revived my interest in Godzilla as well as the other giant monsters like Ghidorah, Rodan, Mothra and Kong. The Monsterverse also became my favorite franchise as a whole after the decline of the marvel and star wars franchises so simply put the Monsterverse has to be my favorite movie franchise to date.

I was introduced to Godzilla by the MonsterVerse I honestly grew up watching the MonsterVerse, but I also watched Shin Godzilla, I thought it was an okay movie watched Godzilla(1998) I hated it at first but I thought it would be better off as a Kaiju movie but it’s kinda been growing on me even the Zilla design(albeit it was America’s first attempt to make a Godzilla film) I watched the anime trilogy as well(the first one was the best one in the trilogy and the only good one imo) I watched KOTM and that became my favourite Godzilla movie Then I watched GvK and I watched Godzilla 2000 a few Heisei films, Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla and Godzilla Vs Destoroyah(that death scene of Godzilla was sad as hell) I watched Godzilla against MechaGodzilla and Tokyo SOS Godzilla Singular Point and they were amazing and I even had the chance to watch Godzilla Minus One in December and I LOVED it! Honestly I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the MonsterVerse

We thought Godzilla died after 75. Godzilla will never die as long as there's money to be made some how, some way. The MV just solidified that.

Monsterverse was a good way to introduce the younger generation to Godzilla and friends. I know a bunch who wanted to watch the older movies because of this. Also Titanic Creations will be releasing a Yongary figure this year also.

Even as someone who personally believes minus one IS the greatest godzilla movie of all time, I would be STUPID to not acknowledge how the Monsterverse SAVED godzilla. If Godzilla 2014 and so on never reignited the public interest in godzilla, we may never have gotten minus one or it may have happened like 100 years later. It's why GVK 2021 is my 2nd favourite godzilla film. It has it's flaws but without Monsterverse. We wouldn't have shin godzilla or minus one.

it actually very simple: without monterverse there will be no minus one, that is why i kinda iritated when ppl slander the direction of monterverse nowday when in history godzilla is very flexible in term of tones and character
@Some_Cat_11 ай бұрын
Even though my introduction to Godzilla was the '98' version (which I loved back then, so sue me), it's clear the monsterverse turned out to be the course correction the franchise was sorely in need of. I'd also be the first to say that the direction it's taken since GvK isn't really my jam but hey, money talks.

The MV saved the entire Godzilla franchise. KDM confirmed it. Toho were preparing to completely kill the entire franchise after Godzilla Final Wars. MV is my favorite incarnation of Godzilla and everything that came after is DUE to the Monsterverse !! (i.e. 2014 Godzilla to present) So let's all enjoy how much great and VARIED content is out there !! Let's STOP fighting about what one is better or not !

Godzilla was always just... There for me. It was that one character that was spoken about but i didnt care... then that damn G14 teaser trailer came out and I was hooked instantly. The monsterverse brought so many new fans in and by saying the movies they love are not good or that they arent true fans, its a great way to kill the momentum the series has now. -1 was fantastic and its success was probably owed to the monsterverse as so much of its box office was from the US. Lets appreciate the old and the new in all forms together, or Godzilla might fade out into history again.

Godzilla 2014 is my nostalgia man it was the reason why Im more interested in the kaiju genera more than boring superhero genres anyway I really love looking fowards alongside other kaiju genre medias like gamera, Pacific rim, ultraman and some indie video games that fall under the kaiju genres. there is something satisfying about seeing giant monsters & entities bringing madness with their tremendous roars and power destroying cities and fighting another giant monster or entity for dominance.
@ORLY91111 ай бұрын
the "rest period" between Final Wars and 14 was a weird time, a decade of rumors, a couple (good) video games and hearing about the Hedorah director trying to get a 3D film greenlit. From my perspective it never felt like the franchise was dead but it did feel like it was on hold, but i know now a lot of the Millenium movies did poorly in Japan. When we first heard Legendary was making a movie and we saw that original concept art, I was excited, and when we saw leaked footage of the "roar" trailer, i was hyped.

The way I see it...and I don't care if this makes someone mad because truth hurts sometimes. Toho fans: Like Godzilla if it's made in Japan and look down on American films. Monsterverse fans: Like Godzilla if it's made by Legendary and laugh at the old school Japanese films. GODZILLA FANS: Are a combination of the best of both. It doesn't matter who makes the movie. As long as Godzilla is in it, they will give it a chance. Whoever makes it doesn't effect whether they like a certain movie or not. No bias (like rating the New Empire based on how it compares to Minus One for example)
