There's such a swelling of dread throughout the film because as much as you know what the ultimate fate of the universe is if you've read the books, and through the 2 parts you see Paul wrestle with the idea of his destiny and what it leads to. So to see him finally fall into his role in the loss of billions of lives with such ease after the Water of Life was very off-putting with how everyone but Chani is caught up in his speech and the prophecy.

@@afunkymonke totally agree! It's also kind of puts you in a weird position as a viewer because everyone likes the big rah rah speech. But for this story, you want to feel inspired by the speech but you also fight that because of its implications. Pretty fun!

I saw Dune Part 2 in IMAX last week, and _immediately_ bought tickets to see it in IMAX again, because I recognized that seeing this masterpiece in its full glory like that was a once in a lifetime opportunity, that I'd remember my whole life. Even when I watch this movie on DVD in my living room years from now, I'll remember how it felt to FEEL the rumble in my body during the worm and battle scenes. How _real_ it felt.

1.43:1 is the way to go. Dune Part 2 only has about 40 minutes of those shots, but they are truly epic and worth a trip if you’re near a theater with one of those screens.

@@FrameVoyagerYeah, Denis used it like Nolan in Oppenheimer-1.90:1 for intimate scenes and 1.43:1 for scenes to emphasize massive scale. I think Paul riding the sandworm scene was a mix of the two aspect ratios, and it worked well.

I've done B&W infared photography and actually recognized the look of skin tones with black and white film, but because there was other color in those scenes, so I just assumed they used some effect to mimic the look of infrared (as can be done - kind of- in photoshop). I was delighted to see that they actually shot the scene with infrared cameras under the precedent that the light from their sun is different than the light of suns from other planets. Such a cool way to incorporate practical effects to communicate scifi worlds. SO cool!!!

100% the opinion of denis and christopher. When I stream a movie the value of a movie is instantly lowered just by the fact that watching a movie isn't anymore an event. Going to the cinema is an event for what you take time and plan your visit. I will remember watching interstellar first time in the theater. Going into the movie with just a vague idea about what it will be. Then experiencing that movie not spoiled by trailers and distractions made it alot more immersive. The soundtrack literally shaking the ground on the planet with those hughe tidel waves will forever be etched into my brain and will always be in my top best movie visits. The same with Dune Part 1 and 2. I've watched both in the best possible theteres twice.

"It's impossible for people to fly under their own power" != "It's impossible for people to fly" "It's impossible to shoot Dune faithfully to the book" != "It's impossible to shoot Dune faithfully to the book's themes and tone" (which is what Villeneuve ultimately did)

Having watched 1&2 with someone unfamiliar with the books, the true magic is the minimum explanation one needs to provide, it was like having a meal and being satiated but not wanting it to end. Everything about DVs Dune is perfection. Sci-fi for the purists and noobs with world building that satisfies all the politicians, philosophers, engineers and architects out there. An IMAX experience well worth the price tag. DV put in the reps and delivered a masterpiece. Side note: 2049 gets better with every watch. Side note 2.. the score in all his films are perfection. I worked as a VFX Artist on this film, and one of my sequences was the sandworm riding sequence. As you said, there was a lot done by VFX artists to sell the worms - majority of those scenes had the worm ENTIRELY replaced by CGI and it's like that for the first one too! DV was a great director to work with as a VFX Artist since he understood the importance of CGI. Sadly, it is disheartening to see some people on film news outlets take the 'practical sandworm' headline and runaway with it when what ended up in the screen was majority VFX. Thanks for mentioning the work we do! DNEG releases "Deep Dives" on films and have one on the first Dune - they will absolutely have one for this film. Yes, I know shields attract worms, but they were getting killed left and right, and they were already on a huge rock, so I don't know why they didn't turn them on. Great video! I really enjoyed this one. Very cool technical details, particularly enjoyed how they shot using different color choices. I love practical effects. I completely agree with Villenueve's view of dialogue in a film. I hate movies with a lot of dialogue. I feel that dialogue can restrict the user's own vision or understanding of a scene. Let us figure it out like we would in real life, through observation, rather than exposition. The audience can fill in the blanks; our imagination is the best story teller and too much dialog can rob us of a good story. And I, once again, enjoyed the filmconvert sponsor spot and peak into some of their cool features and how Frame Voyager uses them!

Thanks! Yeah, Denis Villeneuve really takes the time to let you breathe in the world he's building. Reminds me a lot of Avatar how James Cameron just lets shots linger for a while. But it's just an incredible film. Headed back tonight to see it again

One of my favorite scenes in the book was The Water of Life scene and I was extremely interested to see how they would adapt that scene. Villenueve chose to remove the voice in the scene and instead simply show us that it's affecting Alia. The only story-driven exposition durring that scene is Jessica explaining how she will recieve knowledge of past Reverend Mothers and the Reverend mother saying "What have we done? She is pregnant." All other dialouge is meant to drive the emotional impact of the scene. For example, when the Reverend Mother says "Drink" using the voice, it drives home the urgency of this request and her worry that Jessica might refuse (Something that isn't present in the book where she drinks willingly). Nothing more than needed is said.

I haven't been out to the movie theater in long time.. But I went to see this.. I couldn't wait.. It was great, awesome.. I don't normally go to the movie's I just wait for on demand at home.. For me it's more comfortable that way.. I had to get up 4 times to pee.. Plus I miss hear thing's and need to rewind too.. I knew this wasn't going to be on demand for almost 2 months so I went this time..

This movie is THE BEST SCI FI movie since 2010's INCEPTION. Personally Dune part 2 is my 2nd favourite sci fi movie of all time just behind Tarkovsky's STALKER.

Theatrical was a much much better experience for me. Just the sound alone -- it's optimized for high quality equipment, almost noone has that at home.

With regards to the first one and streaming on Max; I saw the first 20 mins or so on Max but knew that it would be a disservice to finish it. Turned it off then bought movie tickets. Watching part 2 in theaters was just so mind blowing.

We did the same thing! Started the movie on HBO and then decided to turn it off and just drive to the theater. It was a life changing moment for me to see that movie in theaters.

Agreed! I too recommend everyone see Dune Part 2 at least once on the big screen. The use of infrared in the shots of Geidi Prime perfectly simulated their ultraviolet sun. In fact, so many details were faithfully included in this fillm that I will probably see it again on the big screen; that way I can enjoy watching the details while already knowing the main action. There are some awesome reveals too that make you gasp, "Ahhh wow, no kidding?" others that make you think, "I knew it!" and at one point you will say out loud, "Oh crap!" I agree with your excitement, review, and explanations and hope that the third film (Messiah) will be made. In fact, it would be awesome if the franchise would turn into a six part big-screen series. But, I am getting way ahead of myself. 😊

it is so true, when i went to see dune part 1 in theaters i was blown away, it reminded me seeing my first movie "star wars episode one" it was a unique experience. Dune was able to recapture that feeling for me. I understand why he was upset, many people skipped out on that expeiernce. It's not just a movie to see. It was a movie you had to watch in a theater setting and i keep telling people that.

They usually don't get like the full 1.43:1 release but they have the other version that you can tell in films like Oppenheimer or Interstellar

Fantastic that you didn’t minimise the contribution of vfx. I was seeing this film caught up in the recent “no vfx”/ all practical shtick. I’d say it’s great that practical is used to help the actors experience and provide excellent reference for vfx. I think it’s poor form to downplay how much vfx is used because it has been used poorly in the past.

Oh no, it's good to recognize both in my opinion. But yeah, to say they didn't add VFX in for the practical effects shots is ridiculous. The best part here is the VFX was excellent and no distracting.

Honestly, ever since the first Oculus VR googles came out I've been watching every movie on IMAX screen. Now I simply can't seat in front of of TV without thinking about how much better it would've looked in VR. The only downside is people really hate me in my house, it kinda kills movie watching camaraderie, but it does totally worth it.

We cover that in this video in the cinematography section. For monochrome or ir cameras. But the arena itself was likely CGI. I don't think a miniature would make a lot of sense but it could have been that.

Villeneuve is NOT my cup of tea. But damn can he direct and compose shots. I am too old to appreciate his pacing in the first Dune, but the second one is way way way way better. I also love how he does not scapegoat any genre, technique or camera body as part of his marketing. He doesn't need to tear down 3D, VFX, CGI, DIGITAL CINEMA, SUPERHERO MOVIES, ANIMATION to feel good about himself or to gaslight the audience into liking mediocre fare. Based on his principled approach, I respect the man and his vision.

17:20 This doesn't make sense, a computer can Key any color, the reason greenscreens are used, is that the color is far away from Skintones, so that skin doesn't end up accidentally keyed out. In dune they went for Brown background screens, to fix the spill light issue, however that probably came with a lot of manual rotoscoping. Inverting the color won't help here at all. Also the reason that the industry has mostly moved to greenscreen over bluescreen, is that digital cameras usually have more green subpixels than they have blue ones, meaning there is less noise in the green channel. (which makes it easier to key)

Of the decade? Maybe of all time. This is serious sci-fi for adults. No goofing around with silly little bots. No trying to appeal to kids or hoping to sell all the merchandise accompanying film. I think to compare this to anything in the Star Wars series is to put it down in a very closed-minded way. I am thrilled Hollywood stayed away from this and Part 1. They would royally have screwed it up.
