JR, yes. I was watching a guy react to the Moodies' "The Story in Your Eyes," which I love so much. At one point he cut the music and just read the lyrics back to us. I pointed out to him how young Justin was when he wrote that song. Justin was already a profound songwriter at such a young age. His wife Marie, who has been married to Justin for 50 years, said she was attracted to his depth and that there are still parts of him that she loves but doesn't quite understand.

That instument, my dear Sushi, was the late Ray Thomas on the flute. He died shortly before the Moody Blues were voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Justin Hayward on lead guitar and lead vocal, John Lodge on bass guitar and backup tenor vocals, Mike Pinder on keyboard and narrative voice of Late Lament, Ray Tomas on flute and vocals . . . and finally, Graham Edge on drums and writing poetic lines of Late Lament. Nights In White Satin is from the Album "Days of Future Passed", which was basically a theme album of the events of a day put to music and lyric. My oldest surviving sister turned me on to the Moody Blues when I was a teen. If you want another Moody Blues song, you might want to consider "The Actor".

There was much innovation around this period 1967... the mellotron features prominently on this and many other Moody Blues songs but there is orchestration which was a major part of their concept album...Days Of Future Passed. I would suggest playing it through to understand it better. This version of Nights In White Satin is from the LP, which includes the “poetry” at the end, spoken by Mike Pinder, who also plays the mellotron.

I've seen the Moody Blues live five times over the years, with and without an orchestra. That was the late Ray Thomas playing the flute. I've also watched numerous interviews with Justin Heyward and he claims that he wrote it when he was 19 going on 20, when he was leaving one relationship and heading into another, and he just wrote down random thoughts he felt while living the life of a rock star, sang it from his heart, but never thought people would like it, let alone turn it into one of their signature songs. He never intended it to be a single (45rpm).

Justin Hayward’s voice is, and always will be, one of my favorite bits of alchemy in this amazing and beautiful world. He still sings with the voice of an angel. He’s one of a kind, and the music of the early Moody Blues was like lightning in a bottle. We’ll never see its like again.

To me the feeling is pure melancholy...When I hear it, it zooms me back to being parked on a street next to a lush, green park in Ann Arbor, Michigan when I was seven, listening to this song on the radio, waiting for my mom to come out of the doctor’s office. She was dying of leukemia. This song, my dad chain-smoking Camels, feeling like my world was ending. Exquisite pain.

I can't think of suggestions after this song because I'm taken back to being a child all warm in my bed while my sister puts on FM radio. I'm laying there hoping they play this song and when they do I curl up and just listen. I then hope it's the long version with the poem. It is and I am so happy so warm. My only thoughts drift to how sad the lonely man is and how the senior citizens wish they were young. I'm safe because I'm just a child in my mom's house all tucked in. Great memories

These kinds of bands were still relatively few in the day. The genre is progressive rock, a genre made up of bands that did complex music requiring lots of talent, most of them from people with classical training. There were still lots of bands made up of people of much more limited musical virtuosity or just wanting to make simpler music. The other Prog Rockers were really diverse in the sounds they created, experimental in their work. YES, King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and prog rock in general were my taste but as it takes time to build music like this it takes time to absorb it. You listen to this over and over to enjoy the depth of thought, the complex pulse and composition, the unusual instrumentation, the experimental sounds. Doesn't mean pop and other kinds of rock aren't good or done by people with talent. In fact it does stand out against the average music of the era, but I'd argue the current pop era still has a tone of great music in it. Music that makes you think. Music that's beautiful, music that emotes. I guess waht I'm saying is, it's all good, and Moody Blues for instance stands out because it is unique now, was unique then.

This is a song written by one of the band members named Justin Hayward. He liked a girl who gave him satin bed sheets as a gift. He fell in love with her, and she didn't return his affections the same way. One of the lines in the song is "lonely man cries for love and has none", and this is perhaps the biggest indicator of the entire meaning of the song. Beautiful masterpiece for sure.

This song is about love lost. Remembering nights with his lover between sheets of white satin, and the melancholy heartbreak of losing his lover, and no one understanding what he is going through. What is also so amazing about the Moody Blues, other than their stellar composition, is the fact that they played all of the instruments heard on the recordings themselves . Phenomenal musicianship and diversity; In a class all of their own.

I think the line that gets me is "Bedsitter people look back and lament, another day's useless energy spent" possibly because that's how many young - and not so young - people lived, especially when starting work. I started work in 1974 and lived in a bedsitter, no tv, no phone, 2 bar electric fire for heating, shared bathroom. It was tough because inflation and tax were very high, but it was pretty much the norm so we didn't consider ourselves poor or deprived.

When the Moody Blues were first given their chance to record a full album, the record company wanted them to work with the label's symphony orchestra and get a rock an roll version of Dvorak, the arranger for the orchestra having heard the MB's tunes asked them to let him make the arrangements with their music. The rest they say is history because this first album defined the Moody Blues sound for their career. Welcome to the Moody Blues

One of the most beautiful albums ever made, this came out in 1967 and was one of my mother's favorites. Tells the story of a busy day from dawn to nights in white Satin... grab a bottle of wine and sit down with your man and listen to it, I promise you will love it. Love your Elvis reactions and now this song so I'm gonna go subscribe now, thx for sharing...♡

Before this album they were known as an R&B cover band. This song is part of a concept album -- the whole thing covers a day in the life of an ordinary man. The other big hit from the album is "Tuesday Afternoon," but to get the full impact you need to listen to the entire album in order.

This is the end of the concept album "Days of Future Passed". It is the Moody Blues second album. You are correct in that it is meditative. It is also a love song. My wife and I consider this "Our song." To listen to this correctly, or to get the original impact like we did when it came out you need to put on top quality head set, lay back in a bean bag chair, and listen to the whole album from begining to end with out interruption. For me it helps to close your eyes. Welcome to the Moodies.

Glad to see you dipping your toe into classic rock. I know this type of music, because I grew up with it. This song is from a concept album which had musical representations of morning, afternoon, and night. There was also poetry introducing some songs. That was a flute you were listening to. In the way back, my group of friends would impatiently await the next Moody Blues album, then get together to listen to it. It created a type of stereo war in which we were always upgrading our stereos. LOL Good times. Many of my friends are gone now, but I still have the music.

I've heard and deeply felt the pain and sorrow in his expression of those lyrics many times over the years. I have been in and out of love at various points during those times. Looking back now, I much prefer the times I was not in love when experiencing this music. The emotion expressed has more purity, I think, when uncorrupted by feelings of love for another, especially considering the fact that all those lovers are gone now, off living their lives wherever they may be. And yet I can feel this music and soak myself in the heartache and longing of the lyrics, and feel the pure beauty untarnished. This song is truly a work of art. Without it, my life would have been less rich.

Fantastic video T.S. At around 5:30 you point out Justin Hayward's vocal delivery on the line, 'Oh how I love you'. Certainly one of music's most powerfully delivered vocals. It conveys his longing and his desperation alongside those downbeat string stabs driving the beat Your reaction at 4:40 through 4:50 is beautiful. Your look is of one being swept away in the moment. It perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the song at that time. WOW! Thanks for sharing, RNB

Really? It's true that Justin' Hayward's vocal is one for the ages. The most moving performance of this song I've ever seen happened about two years ago in Dallas, Texas. Justin was on his solo tour with his small band. Justin had lost his voice temporarily to laryngitis and had mostly recovered.. But he found suddenly that he couldn't sing the soaring chorus for "Nights." Suddenly, out of nowhere, the audience started singing, "Yes I love you, oh how I love you!" for him. Justin continued to sing the verses and the audience sang the choruses back to him until the song was done. When it was over, Justin stepped back from the microphone with tears in his eyes and I was crying myself. That's the power of this song as a shared experience.

"Cold hearted orb that rules the night, removes the colors from our sight. Red is Gray, and Yellow White, but we decide which is right (and which is an illusion)" When those words are spoken at the beginning of Nights in White Satin, the emphasis is on "...but WE decide...". When spoken again after the song ends, the emphasis is "...and WHICH IS an illusion?..." I believe it refers to the fact that colors appear different in sunlight than they do in moonlight. Color is not objective, not absolute. It is more subjective than we realize. By extension, 'things' are more subjective than we often realize. But that's a whole other can of worms.
@jackndew2
@jackndew2 4 жыл бұрын
The correct line at the end is "Cold hearted ORB that rules the night...." He is talking about the full MOON that ..."removes the colors from our sight."
