Unlike *certain gaming companies* Nintendo’s acquisitions usually leave me going “holy cow that’s smart.” I was particularly happy with Next Level (I love them so much), but this one is also super smart of them! Also, on the Mortal Kombat 1 port, that was only bad because they rushed to be day and date with PS5/PC. Of note for NLG, that seems to be a case of not wanting history to repeat. NLG, just like Rare, was going to be sold to another company either way. For Rare, Nintendo was not interested in buying out companies. This ended up with Rare instead going to Microsoft. Nintendo didn't foresee this possibility, and they lost one of their greatest allies. NLG wasn't in a bad spot like Rare, but the investors (I believe) were just done with them. They were going to sell the company one way or another. Nintendo didn't want what happened with Rare to happen again because NLG is one of their best partners. So they went ahead and bit the bullet

@@lukeo5761 Investors don't actually care about the longterm strength of a company or their assets. They care about how much _growth_ the company can achieve. If a company has a crazy successful product launch but the product hits market saturation quickly and the next launch is another 5 years away, then they basically perceive the company as having "peaked," even if they can maintain steady sales of that product. Not to defend Embracer, but more for some clarification. Embracer had a $2 Billion deal with Savvy Games Group which had already previously invested $1 Billion into Embracer. Embracer unfortunately took this as a opportunity to buy up a bunch of studios to secure themselves as one of the next big entertainment groups. At the last minute Savvy pulled out of the deal (as far as I know, the reason still isn't public) which caused Embracer to start selling / closing everything. I remember watching a video with Bellular talking about the whole situation and then seeing videos of the CEO just looking absolutely destroyed over the news and I don't doubt that part of it is knowing how many people are about to have their lives made worse from this. I don't know the full scope of the entire deal between Savvy and Embracer, but most of all this could have been avoided if Embracer had waited for the deal to close before buying everything.

これは非常に的を絞った、妥当な範囲の買収のように思えます。また、Switch 時代の他の買収 (SRD、Nintendo Pictures) とも一致しています。 Nonetheless I was really surprised by Nintendo purchasing an Embracer studio, but this acquisition makes a lot of sense. Embracer has been selling off many studios after their failed deal with the Saudi government, and Nintendo could use extra support to build up the Switch successor's library with third party ports. They don't do acquisitions that often, so this must be a big priority for them.

The interesting thing about Shiver is that they ported Mortal Kombat 11 to the Switch which is widely seen to be one of those "impossible ports" as the game actually runs at 60FPS in combat and was very competently done. Also, both MK1 and Hogwarts Legacy on the Switch run significantly better NOW than they did at launch which is usually more a testament to a studio not being given enough time to make a port happen. The thing is, for the next several years Shiver will just continue to do exactly what they were already doing as the tweet indicated so assuming they are already contracted to port a few games over to Switch 2 the real benefit from Nintendo is that they can give Shiver even more tech support for optimization with them becoming first party and other than that they can just leave them alone and they'll continue to do what they do. Really, I only see Nintendo pouring additional funds into Shiver IF they feel like they need to scale up their operation so that they can handle multiple projects at once as they are quite small currently (the number I saw was something around 20 employees).
@rotciv5576 ай бұрын

Nintendo generally only acquire studios who have shown interest in becoming a part of their brand, thus avoiding the controversial purchases that is otherwise frequent in the market. Therefore your guess about there possibly having been talks behind the scenes is, based on track record, the most likely thing that happened and is what I would put my money on as well. Beyond that they prefer to cultivate their own developers, which is why they "recently" (2022) bought a plot next to their Kyoto HQ for the purpose of building an entirely new studio - that building won't be finished before 2028, but will allow them to eventually double their own talent. It's tagged for R&D, but a lot of Nintendo's R&D also result in new franchises, and this will also free up space in the original HQ for development of established franchises. In other words, Nintendo is growing positively right now.

It seems everybody has forgotten about one major detail from last years 2023 Xbox games conference; which is when Phil spencer announced that he would be partnering up with Nintendo to bring activision and blizzard games to the switch; and more specifically, he mentioned call of duty. (Over watch is already a title, as well as a couple activision/blizzard games). Idk, i think this plays a huge role into Nintendo’s decision to buy this porting company. We all know how the old call of duty titles performed on Nintendo hardware… (not really good). This goes without saying that the switch 2 will be very powerful, I want to say competitive with the XSX and PS5, so porting/transferring games traditionally made for those consoles should bring in a lot of new customers, with an up to par quality of course given this action by Nintendo- and the deal Phil spencer made which acquired activision and blizzard in the first place (to make them more accessible, to make more money) will definitely play out in front of us on the activision/blizzard side of things for sure. I've played the game back in the day, I was 14 then and Vivians bully was indeed a thing, but the whole femboy thing is in Japanese version (or so I heard many moons ago) either way the game as a whole was amazing in 04 😊.

I'm really sorry that you had to play Scribblenauts Showdown

Maybe they'll be assigned specifically to Microsoft ports since there will be a steady stream of those. So, my guess will be Killer Instinct.

It would be awesome for Shiver entertainment to focus on not only Nintendo studios but to help companies port their games over to Switch.
@rotciv5576 ай бұрын
I mean...that's kinda the point of buying it, no? Nintendo doesn't need any of their own games ported, they want a company at hand that they can quickly point at and say: "take this WB/Bethesda/Activision/Ubisoft/etc game and make it play on Switch" without having to make deals with unaffiliated porting focused studios or having the company that made the actual game spend time doing it themselves.

@@rotciv557 only time will tell if they’ll exclusively work with third parties or Nintendo properties or both. Right now that information isn’t confirmed.

This is a very good and strategic move for Nintendo. Having an additional studio on hand specializing with getting other people's games to run on Switch 2 will make things easier for big western 3rd party AAA games. Nintendo could easily lend Shiver out to a company like Take-Two/Rockstar and have them help in bringing say GTA6 to the Switch 2. Shiver being in the Eastern Time zone is also a nice benefit as it makes collaborating with studios in Europe and the rest of North America much easier as they'll be at work during the same time at various points in the day, not to mention no issues regarding a language barrier. Considering the Switch 2 is going to be close to the Series S based on the hardware specs list discovered earlier, it'll be getting significantly more third party games than the Switch, not just that, but many will launch on it the same day as other systems. Having a studio internally to assist others will only result in better third party games and relations.

Shiver could also see a huge jump in manpower, since Nintendo will probably want them on hand for several games at the same time which obviously requires more hands on deck than what they currently have

@rotciv557 Shiver only has 20 employees, it's not a big studio at all
@rotciv5576 ай бұрын
@@1originalaccountname yeah, that's what I meant. With 1st party backing Shiver could start hiring a lot more people and expand their manpower. If 20 people can port a game in a year, for example, then they could probably expand up to 50 and get that same game out 6 months earlier with the same level of polish. And it's not like there isn't a surplus of talent out there looking for work, what with all the many layoffs that every other gaming company is doing...

@@rotciv557 I don't see them doubling in size soon, but maybe up to 30 in like a year or two. They have a great pitch to attract top talent though: Do you want to work for Nintendo and live in South Florida?
