QUICK CORRECTION: We said in the video that Jupiters gravity probably "pushed" the asteroids out of the Asteroid Belt. The wording was pretty bad and lots of you got confused. What we meant was that Jupiters huge gravity interfered with the orbit of the asteroid belt and consequently slingshot some asteroids out of it. And by chance Mars was at the right place on the right time to "catch" them (meaning they couldn't escape Mars' gravity and started to orbit it). Gravity can't "push" something like we animated it in the video - sorry we didn't make this clear enough!

The idea that Mars may have a ring one day makes me feel oddly happy. I think planetary rings are one of the coolest features a planet can have even if it's thin or dangerous. Not having a ring and suddenly developing one out of a moon you couldn't keep anyways is kind of like magically growing wings imo

Plus rings aren’t even that uncommon in the solar system lots of planets have them, Saturn’s rings are just the most famous lol. Besides it’s not like it would be competing with Saturn, Saturn’s rings are so famous because of how bright and big they are. Mars’ rings would be small and simple 🤷♀️ trust me no ones going to be forgetting about it once Mars gets rings too

@Detoyato9 жыл бұрын
***** Because a sphere is the shape that has the least surface area compared to volume. Any deviation of shape from it will increase the surface area and if the object is terribly malformed and riddled with impact craters then it's surface area would balloon to much over that of when it's a sphere.

If Phobos orbits an average distance of 9400km from Mars, and it is approaching at 2m/year, it should take 4.7 million years. This is a far cry from the 50-100 million stated in the video. If we consider acceleration, it just reduces the amount of time it would take, making 50-100 million even less accurate. Am I missing something here?

Hi @Kurzgesagt, there's an error at 0:56: Phobos approaches Mars at a rate of 1.8m per century, not per year. Also, the animation of Mars catching an asteroid is confusing. Otherwise, nice video, thanks.
