I've noticed the same thing in New Brighton and when you get to where you think it is, it's gone. I've heard it described as a ‘Towering Super Mirage’. which can happen when there is layer of cool air near ground level with a warmer layer of air directly above it, which causes light to refract as it passes through the different layers. This can make far away objects appear taller, larger or closer than they actually are.

I'm glad that it isn't just me seeing this anomaly every time I travel through moreton. I thought I was going crazy 😂

it can be seen in many parts of the Wirral. Tesco Roundabout can be a good place as well

Going towards West Kirby, just by the screw pine where Grange Road meets Column Road - if you look towards the War memorial. I've only noticed it this winter though.

OH i have not noticed it from there. I will check it out next time we are there

I think it is to do with perspective. If you look at any flat plain photograph, the horizon area is always higher than the area close to you.

I didn't see the Wind Generators going up, I was living in the states at the time. I too was fooled by this phenomenon. Approaching Hoylake Road on Bidston Village Road, one gets a similar "mirage" with the generators on the North Bank of the Mersey. I suspect that it is a similar visual effect when looking at a full moon on the horizon. It appears to be huge and you can see details of the surface more clearly. Nevertheless, If one takes a school protractor (we all have one somewhere in a drawer) and spread the tips so that at arms length the tips are either side of the moon, thus indicating the diameter. Put the protractor to one side. A few hours later, go outside and the Moon will by higher in the sky, Take the protractor and, at arms length, doe not move the tips. You will see that, although the moon appears much smaller than before, the protractors indicate the diameter hasn't changed.

Interesting perspective!

I might be able to help. First, how tall are the turbines really? The Echo, guardian of all things accurate, has them at 195 metres: www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/see-huge-wind-turbines-double-11985643 Perhaps even more accurate are the project stats at 4C Offshore, which have them at a total height of 137 meters: www.4coffshore.com/windfarms/burbo-bank-united-kingdom-uk02.html So now the line of sight above the railway bridge should include the top one-quarter of the turbines. But that's still not enough to explain what you see. Now, your calculations are correct, BUT they apply only to earwigs, snails and drunks lying in the gutters of Pasture Road. When sober, my eyes are approximately 1.65 metres above the ground. This makes the rise to the top of the bridge not 5, but 3.35 metres. With these new figures, you should be able to see from 70 meters upwards at the turbine farm, which would make half of the entire turbine visible. Hope this helps. Steve P Expat scouser

Clearly it's due to Scotch mist, perspective and the swervature of the Earth.

I think the curvature of the earth has an effect on this phenomena.

same phenomenon as with mirages in the desert - its to do with water and reflections
@stevepridgeon14137 жыл бұрын
That was my first thought, but the problem is that mirages come and go, but this phenomenon is the same all the time. If you check my message below, there actually isn't a mystery. You see just about what you would expect, once you take all the distances and heights into account.

thank Steve. I dont live in Moreton anymore so will take your word for this.
