"The Morning of September 11, 2001" is a documentary that I researched, wrote, produced and directed when I worked at WPIX-TV. It aired once, at 8 p.m. on September 11, 2002. It has not been seen since. I am posting the video for the 20th anniversary so anyone who is interested can get an accurate description and feel for the events of that day, and how people recalled 9/11 while it was still fresh in everyone's mind.
As recently as 2018 the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner identified another one of the 2,977 (according to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum) Americans killed that day.
The program won a New York Emmy Award for Outstanding News Special and the Edward R. Murrow Award (Television - Large Market) in the News Documentary category.
(All music and photos were properly licensed.) I do not own the production. I hope no one will object to me posting this video for the historical record. I have not “monetized” this video.
As evidenced by the 9/11 Commission Report published in 2006, the details presented here are accurate.
When the program aired on TV there was a live introduction by Jim Watkins, who is the narrator. That’s missing here.
Here are the names of the people who are interviewed and who speak, identified by when they first appear.
1:09 Michael Nestor, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey
1:34 Iliana McGinnis, Wife of Thomas McGinnis (Carr Futures)
1:58 Stanley Praimnath, Fuji Bank
3:13 Tom Heidenberger, Capt., USAirways
3:51 Elaine Duch, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey
4:32 Gerard Gaeta, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey
4:39 Doreen Smith, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey
4:48 Major Dean Eckmann, F-16 Pilot, North Dakota Air National Guard (Langley AFB)
4:52 Louise Broughton, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey
5:23 Richard Tierney, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey
5:51 Joseph Milanowycz, Son worked at AON Corp.
8:43 Glenn Michael, Manager, Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center
13:22 Brain Clark, Euro Brokers
14:54 Vic Arnone, WPIX-TV
18:22, Frank Hatfield, FAA East Region Air Traffic Division Manager
28:27, Deena Burnett, Wife of Tom Burnett
33:46, Wallace Miller, Somerset County (PA) Coroner
34:17, Dr. Betty Maxfield, Civilian Chief of Demographics, U.S. Army
44:18 Jack Grandcolas, Husband of Lauren Grandcolas
44:42 Fred Fiumano, Friend of Marion Britton
CORRECTION: The song played at the end is by Sting AND Kipper.

23 years on 9/11 still makes me cry. It was late night in Australia when the story broke. My husband and I sat up all night watching it unfold. Crazy to think that people on the other side of the world knew more about what was happening than the people inside the buildings. God bless you all.

I was 9 years old Brazilian kid. My aunt worked in New York 3 times a week. We had no idea where or the days and we couldn’t get in touch with her. Her 3 years old daughter was living with us at the time. This day stayed with me, for almost 12 hours we thought about how to give the news to this baby if something happened to her mom.

That photo at 31:57 was so haunting in the days after, it was the look in his eyes. That photo was on the cover of newspapers here in the UK, and I know I wasn’t alone in thinking that fireman probably didn’t make it out. Then, a week later, he popped up on breakfast tv here, somehow he did make it out, I was so relieved for his family.

@ 21:59 I realized that after 23 years and watching endless documentaries, I’d never heard flight 175 smack into the tower like THAT. My God. I know the plane was moving at speeds close to 600mph, but the sound isn’t muffled or altered in this footage. God, that must’ve been deafening even standing on the ground. It’s a miracle Stanley isn’t permanently deaf or worse. That plane literally crashed in his face!

There is audio of that impact from right at ground zero. It’s recorded by an FBI informant who was meeting at the Greenhouse Cafe in the Marriott World Trade with a person the FBI was investigating. The first hour of it is him being wired up and then the chatter of his breakfast meetup and other people in the restaurant. Then he hears an explosion-first plane-and that sends everyone running. You can hear glass crashing, people screaming, etc. He makes it outside and a distance away and then the second plane hits. And, holy, it is the loudest noise on a recording that I’ve ever heard! Deafening. It is able to be found here on KZbin.

I'm a Brit. I had some weird dreams about this, before and after. I woke on the morning of 9/11 feeling so much foreboding, and I could not imagine why. For some reason I could not imagine, I took out a pocket pager from where I'd retired it in 1998. I hadn't needed it since my first ever mobile phone. I was in town when the first reports happened, and they came in over my pager. Yes, I had changed the batteries, and the free service was still active. The last messages I ever got on that old pager were news reports about the terrorist attack. The very last message had been about the second tower collapsing. That pager never sent me any messages again.

I have many connections to 9/11 because I live in NJ. We lost people, my GF was supposed to be on flight 93 on 9/12/01, we both worked in the area, etc., but the most confounding thing about the day was the flight that hit the Pentagon. How a non-professional pilot can steer a massive jet into a building just feet from the ground is just fascinating. If it weren't so gruesome it would be remarkable. RIP to all the victims of that day, including my friends Susie and Jim.

Palestinians have lost lots of credibility because of the Gaza attack. There was no justification for it and many in the West won't forget it, which is understandable. Thank you for this upload. I'm from the UK and this moment in history continues to hold me rapt. I had not seen this very human documentary before. Every time I watch one of these I can't help thinking about a story I read about American FL77 on the Sunday following the attacks. It mentioned that one of the passengers was a little boy aged 11 who was a solo child passenger, returning back to his mother after spending summer vacation with his father. I have never seen this reported or mentioned elsewhere since. I think of the sheer terror that boy must have felt, without family or friend to comfort him in the final moments of his young life. My eternal hope is that somebody, air steward or passenger, was able to hug him and pray with him before that terrible impact at the Pentagon. RIP to all.

In the south tower stairwell A was open all the way from top to bottom. If you were in the north tower your fate was sealed if you were above the impact floors. There were many in the south tower that stayed put because the 911 operators told them that was the correct option. Normally it would be except in this instance that was a deadly decision since stairwell A was clear and no possibility firemen were going to make it to the top in the limited time before the collapse. There were many in the south tower that stayed put because the 911 operators told them that was the correct option. Normally it would be except in this instance that was a deadly decision since stairwell A was clear and no possibility firemen were going to make it to the top in the limited time before the collapse

It gets the nose off the sent of the real perpetrators. I could film you celebrating a birthday and put it on the 11oclock news and say you are rejoicing that an unarmed man was shot. @@laurenmccreadie797 It's worth noting that Italy's involvement in World War II and the atrocities committed under Mussolini's fascist regime offer a historical lesson about the dangers of uncritically supporting military actions driven by ideology or propaganda. Italy was involved in aggressive expansion, colonial atrocities in Africa, and aligned itself with Nazi Germany, leading to immense human suffering and devastation. These actions were eventually recognized as tragic mistakes that harmed not only the world but Italy itself. Bringing this into the discussion about America's involvement in Iraq after 9/11, it’s essential to consider how emotional responses, nationalism, and misinformation can lead to misguided wars. Just as Italy’s actions during World War II were shaped by ideology and expansionist goals, the invasion of Iraq was influenced by fear, a desire for control in the Middle East, and inaccurate intelligence about weapons of mass destruction. Criticizing the U.S. for its involvement in Iraq doesn’t ignore the reactions of a few individuals, like Palestinians celebrating after 9/11, but rather places emphasis on the larger consequences of war. Just as Italy’s WWII actions had profound negative outcomes, so did the Iraq war, which destabilized the region, cost countless lives, and left lasting scars. It's vital to learn from history and approach foreign policy decisions with care, not letting isolated incidents justify broader military actions.
