In the campaign I'm playing, our DM used the long lifespan of the elf to enact a magical trap in which the player character had spent 54 years trapped in a cuesed story book for which the rest of party only experienced in a few minutes in real-time. It was interesting way for the player character to re-spec thier characters class and gear. The narrative used was a complete ad-lib. The characters' personality and tendency changed significantly as well from the experience.

YES, another aging mechanic Love these, players generally use age as just flavour nowadays So i like to mix stuff up by using older versions of monsters, specifically ones that age said player. The older they get, they start developing more and more detrimental effects, and its NOT easily reversable, it doesnt go away once you kill the beast, and the age can keep stacking until death. To reverse it, you either gotta meet with a VERY powerful god (depending on which of my campaigns im running, depends on how easy that is) OR they have to brew a potion that requires the powderized heart of a Queen Tarrasque (Tarrasque's are no longer a single one per world, my setting has entire packs lf them wondering around), the spit of a Magic Dwarf (very rare, Dwarves are NOT magically inclined in my campaign, only 3 dwarves in history has been able to cast spells, all the others rarely even learn they have any connection to the weave at all), and finally a fragment of an earth bone (easy to find, not easy to acquire, you can see them all over the place, usually in cliff faces and mountains, but they there, and theyre the hardest material nsturally occuring) Aging and Dying of said aging are very real in my campaigns, some portions are hardcore like that, while i tone down other bits that dont generally fit into my DM style (although i will tailor the way i run the game to the players within reason)

A person I played with at a comic shop had their character die of old age because of a ghost that aged him like 40 years. And they said they were like 60 when our DM asked how old his character was, he said he was aiming for being an old war veteran kind of character. We then had to look up how long Tieflings lived. We couldn’t bring him back because he technically died of natural causes.

This is why I am happy about being a undying warlock. You need 10 years to pass to age 1 year and you become immune to being magically aged so some of the races that already live a long time become absolutely insane to the point you can start a different campaign a couple thousand years in the future from the previous one and still have a cameo plus it avoids those pesky creatures that can age you also just the concept can be really fun. My current character is basically a blight a actual disease given life able to control body’s either corpses or taking over body’s of others even able to mutate body’s of normal animals into usable hosts. so far there plan is to free a ancient dragon from there patron themselfs the same patron who gave them life there patron being something similar to exactly what they are a blight stealing control of a body that isn’t there’s so far there patron hasn’t exactly put a stop to this so it’s either going on o go well or something

I joined a campaign in progress at lvl 8. First fight was against a Frost Giant Ghost. She had this ability and used on my character, the new guy of the team. I was 18 to start with, but my character had been held in stasis for 100 years when released by the other PC's. Also, I'm a Shadar'kai, that like most Elves live up to 750 years. Plus the Shadar'kai just get resurrected in the Shadowfell, so they don't really ever die. So aging my guy from 18(118ish) to 48(148ish) really just meant nothing. The moment just did not have the impact the DM wanted.

One of my favorite characters I've made in years was a 40 year-old alcoholic "legendary hero", who was a fighter for many years. His story is basically that his estranged son is kidnapped, and he decides to sober up to go find him. I always found the speed with which characters level up in DnD to be a bit crazy if the campaign doesn't make sure to include large gaps of time, so i found a solution with this character: Basically, he isn't learning anything new. His exp and level gain is just him getting back into shape and remembering things he forgot after years of drinking. So his rapid improvements make way more sense than some 21 year old fighter becoming an unstoppable killing machine in like 6 months lol

This could be a cool gimmick… as long as the effects wear off after killing the boss, or at least can be removed by Dispel Magic, Lesser/Greater Restoration, Remove Curse, etc, but even that is pushing it. A character’s age is an important decision made by the player, so changing that should be done with care and should be easily reversable. If you have a half-orc barbarian that you force to become a gnome, I doubt your player would be too happy about that either.
