This is why side stepping in fighting games is a huge deal and way better because you can just side step the clone and it's no longer op anymore. Side stepping in fight games requires more skill so people that play games without think it makes the game more easy because their own skill issue. They can't think of ways to use it to their advantage and don't use it so think it doesn't do anything since people they play against also don't use it so when they fight someone who does they think it's cheap because they never bothered to get good.

​@@jaydeestrong You're wrong.. they did fix it by making the ice trap move in mk11. It is very nerfed but allows you to control space. You basically make a ball of ice that functions like the clone does. It has a slow start up though so is not for punishing, just zoning.

Ironically the Ice Ball is technically not iconic to Kuai Liang, as his freeze was originally Ice Shower. It could actually be a pretty good balance to make styles that have Ice Clone only have Ice Shower, since that move is significantly worse than Ice Ball.

The ice clone in the corner was actually way crazier in the mkx corner than what was said in the video, sub zero could place the clone in a way that even teching the grab meant u got frozen, His overhead is usually unsafe but in the corner it actually becomes safe because when he has a clone in ur face and he does b2, the pushback on block puts him behind his clone again meaning you'll get frozen if u try to punish him, actually b2 almost becomes + because u still cannot move after u block it or you'll get frozen so there are instances where he can do b2 on block into another b2 cuz you cannot press buttons outside of armor. Another thing, jumping out of the corner while his clone is up is not a thing cuz the clone catches your jump lmao it was so incredibly stupid. His corner carry midscreen was also insane due to freeze, anytime he got a freeze on you, he could always switch sides to the closest corner and his combo had insane corny carry with it which meant anytime u got touched in neutral u were gonna be cornered. Armoring out of the corner was also a much bigger mind game. Sub zero's clone lasted so long that he could block for a few frames while u were getting up to bait the armor then go in for a 50/50 afterwards so if you wanted to armor out of the corner you had to mix him up by timing ur armor move differently each time xD. Great video though loved the mkx memories.

Nice video, I really like this. You explain why something is OP without just saying "that character is OP or this character sucks." And then having %98 of your comments saying "YoUrRe jUsT bAd." A staggering amount of players are blind to the depth behind a GOOD fighting game. When %75 of any characters moves puts the rest of the roster in spots which they have only a %5 chance to counter correctly, it comes across as pretty unbalanced. This is just how one character works and it took 10 mins to explain this one aspect. Imagine trying to go in depth with each character's strengths and weaknesses to explain best and worst match ups, tier lists and ease of play. Nobody really wants to hear how you're correct. They just want you to be bad.

Yep the ice clone has been a staple since MK3 and I miss it. That ice trap was never an ice clone and anyone that says it was needs to be dragged out side and hung by their little Piggy's. I would love to see it come back, even if it had diminishing returns that way after 3 consecutive uses while with in X space it didn't work. I remember doing combos where you would jump in with a High Kick and seat it deep then ice clone. So the kick (seeing as it was late and contact was low to the ground, as that use to be a thing) would alow you to ice clone and freeze. The enemy was considered grounded still and you could start a series of short combos that ended with freezes, then ended with the 9 hit. So in total if you nailed it you got a 16 hit combo. Back in the day they didn't have % on the combos but I believe is was around 50 to 60% if you got it off. Then again back in MK3 and UMK3 every character had a 50% combo if you knew how to set it up. Speaking of which that is so.ething else I miss, the hard counter picks, I know in current games there are counter picks but they seem to be like a 10% increase odds of wining. I remember playing the arcade cabinets and someone picking sub zero and me picking night wolf and that alone giving me roughly a 40 to 60% change of wining. Anyhow rambled long enough

Mkx ice clone definitely gives u zoning and the fact u can throw the clone is kinda gives u advantage. But of course depends on the user. My suggestion is nerfing: No On Air ice clone or it fall and breaks Must be 2 feet on the ground activation Enemies projectile shatters it but doesnt nullify enemy projectile Ice clone only block physical attack , not icing of character. Either of these 4 kinda ok to me. Ice clone still a classic move and enjoy my time in UMK3 as a counter offensive

Perosnally, I never saw a problem with this. The fact that Sub-Zero was basically a God character if you knew how to use him right was awesome. I never did play MKX online, but I do play MK11 online just about every day. I'm a pretty good sport about losing. The only time I start feeling annoyed enough to possibly start raging is when I get an opponent like Netotigr, who simply spams the same projectile over and over again, and knows just enough about combos to knock you back when you get close. Even then, I hardly rage, but it's upsetting to lose to someone who clearly doesn't know how to fight properly. But I digress... Had I played MKX online and come across someone who knew how to use Sub-Zero like this, I'd have been impressed. I've lost fights in MK11 online that made me want to choose the "friendly rematch" option just to see if my opponent could show off with some more creativeness. Seriously, oftentimes when I lose to someone who can actually pull this stuff off, I almost want to lose to them again just so I can again watch them do it.

Was he spamming or zoning? There's a difference.... If you lost to a spammer who's doing the same move over and over and you can't figure out a way around it, than that's on you. If you lost to a zoner however who actually is really good at space control, than give your opponent credit for playing a zoner effectively. Zoning with a zoning character is fighting properly, they were designed to control space.

It would be easier to make the clone untrowable and ignore projectiles like it always was. I mean, i love these applications and think they're very creative and all, but it's just too powerful. Or maybe have the same characteristics but the explosion of the projectile could hurt you. As a trade, the clone could have your last pose, bringing back it's strategic positioning, but the hitbox of the thrown clone could be as big as a normal projectile (the animation could be him transforming the clone in an ice spike for example). The shattering could be nerfed too, making less damage.

I always play Ice Vs ice in this match up. To get through his ice clone I just slide under the ice clone when he throws it but I have to keep my eyes peeled for when they do it because only when he throws it you have to time it just right for you to have that little space to go under and not get hit. 👍🏼still tho you don’t always get the win ESPECIALLY if they’re spamming the hell out of those ice clones which 8/10 they will.

Some ways I think this could’ve been nerfed for MK11 were - Projectiles pierce through and break the clone. - Nerf Detonate’s damage - Sub-Zero now throws it sideways so it’s a balanced mid projectile. - And MAYBE you only get frozen if you hit the clone with a melee attack.

Ferra Torr can Ferra toss through the ice clone and the ice ball, even the meter burn ice ball, and still hit Sub Zero. In the vicious variation the boss toss is more of a straight forward projectile so there's no chance of the ice ball going under Ferra during the toss.

In the corner if you hit them with the overhead the best option is to not use the shatter. B2 b2 d1 d1 d1 (i forgot if its 3 or 4 d1s, this will cause your clone to expire midcombo) b12 ice clone (clone will freeze) njp, jump in 1, end with f12 This is 40% meterless clone oki which is so good For the low option or 12shatter option you can still do the 3 or 4 d1s into b12 ice clone freeze as well if im not mistaken.

Number 2,420,069 on why I dislike/HATE/dropped MK11, they removed Sub-Zero's ice clone. Moves especially iconic moves shouldn't be removed from characters just because SOME players don't want to learn ways around them, they may need to be nerfed but not removed entirely, imagine if MK12 comes out and Scorpion doesn't have his teleport because mk11 players complained about it. Actually that might be a possibility with some of the bafflingly stupid decisions NRS makes sometimes.

I remember to be able to activate the ice clone mid combo while still hitting you causing me to be able to keep the combo going or even just being able to get a free X-ray off without worrying you blocking. Ice clone was broken af.

3:00 as well as the clone staying up for longer, the move also comes out a couple frames faster. So if you're rushing someone down into a corner after they've been knocked down, you can deploy your clone just a millisecond faster for that small advantage

Man these games look crazy to me. The reptile character looks bonkers. I still remember being about 12 years old when MK 2 came out in arcades. We rode our bikes down to the pizza shop that had the game and some older kid busted out this unknown glitch in the game. You had to play with Johnny Cage and you also needed back-to-back FLAWLESS victories. Then you had to use Cage's uppercut FATALITY for the finish. This sequence of events unlocked Reptile, which was just insane to us at the time. Makes me sentimental.

Kuai Liang has always been my favorite Sub-Zero because of the ice clone and ice shower moves. Over the years it seems like they kept nerfing his power set. When they removed the ice clone, I started maining Scorpion. Damn tragedy. My favorite thing to do was to set up my ice clone and do an enhanced ice slide then come in for a punish.

Arctic Trap shows us how to nerf the Ice Clone: make it dirt slow to create, and break it when Kuai Leung gets hit, the second stipulation could be made easier to activate by revoking its projectile-blocking properties to boot, then if you get stomped by the clone's sheer power and versatility, you have only yourself to blame.

Return the clone and the frozen animation from when it's activated. Just give more tools to break it or hit through it. (Maybe make it a taunt that you can break the animation of leave a clone for a few seconds.) No little orbs...

I remember the ice clone in MK3. It was one of the safest moves in the game but back then projectiles went through it. In MKX I had a friend who played Sub Zero and did this move to move. Fortunately I was Takeda with Shirai Ryu variant for the teleport. I think the clone could be fixed if they just made it so you can't use it in close proximity to your opponent.

What I would like to see from whatever version of cryomancer we'll be seeing from what looks like will be another soft reboot is: Looks: a look that incorporates OG ninja attire, with sub-zero's mk deception/mkx/mk9 look, also Something similar to scorpion's mk deception and mkx look (for sub-zero.) All white or all blue eyes. ice arms/shoulders/ribcage/legs (Mk4) or noticably icy veins. Ice aura. More sleek looking mask. If we get a female sub-zero, ice hair like Frost. Ice mask that looks like actual ice, instead of a bright blue, ice tray. Moves: a command grab. maybe one or two ice weapon moves. Stance change, more use of weapons, Preferably just dagger and hammer. Parry/counter. More settle x-ray (sometimes less is more.) A grab where he holds you down and hits you repeatedly with an ice rock, which gets bigger each time (3 hits.) Visually pleasing gameplay aesthetics: something like his mkx's select screen character pick. For his losing animation, he deeply exhales cold air, forming ice on the ground, then breaks it with a hammer fist before getting up. For a win animation, If he's a safe distance away, makes and sits on an ice throne ( maybe even saying, it's not that cold.)

Ice clone was first introduced in MK3 in the 90s. It was one the features that differentiated the new mask less sub zero at the time

I think the most egrigious (feeling hella smart using a word i dont know) thing about the clone is that sub zero can just walk through it like it never existed, the clone should be solid for sub zero and you should have three options 1. You let it there to take space and reduce the options for both you and the opponent to react 2. You throw it to freeze them (i think its a thing already) Or 3. You attack through it to start a combo with some chip damage added upon breaking the clone (as in, shards of ice flying in a small arc area in front of it)

I don't think this is as OP as people say and I was salty when they took it away for MK11 because Sub Zero ALWAYS gets the short end of the stick. The ice clone was an equalizer if anything.

I always thought the most powerful attack and combo in the history of MK is Noob Saibots teleport from below, when the opponent bounces fire the smoke cloud, dash in, quick combo and before it expires repeat the process! Ultimate MK3 is the game. I know that it’s not played competitively but I just thought I’d mention it.

great critique ! I think the ice clone that is thrown as a projectile was just for disrespecting your opponent, almost like the original scissor trip takedown both scorpion and subzero had in the original; pulling that off was master level and disrespectful to your opponent, at least back in the day.

Favorite counter to sub was reptile. Once you got that slow acid ball mixed in with the slide or acid spit it was easy money.
