Just to add, it doesn't only cover the (individual) muscles, it also covers organs, muscle groups and whole compartments of the body under the skin, like the forearm etc. as a separation from the skin. So it's pretty much everywhere on the body like a net holding everything in place and also helping with the movement etc. For people who have cut whole pieces of animals (meat): It's the very thin and translucent layer on top of a body part/"piece of meat" that you can kind of squish around separately from the fat and muscles.

I mostly know about lapis lazuli because it's prominent in Christopher Moore's historical novel, Sacré Bleu.
