We have been cruising on the Llangollen Canal and its safe to say its been our favorite canal we have EVER cruised on. It has been on our boating bucket list to cross the two big aqueducts but unfortunately, on the 2nd one, Lauren had a bit of a panic!

Wonderful vid, and Adam's poem just summed up human existence. My dad worked at the nearby Monsanto chemical factory (the whole area stank of sulphur compounds until the 60s) before the war; he and his young mates would walk over the "Accie" on the *outside* of the railings. A friend, also young at the time, lived in Froncysyllte and used to cycle over the bridge - until one night she fell in, couldn't climb out, and had to push her bike in the canal half a mile to the ramp at Fron! That poem again... 🙂 You've mastered the Welsh "ll" very well, Adam, so you're half way to getting "Pontcysyllte" right. The letter 'c' is always pronounced like 'k' in Welsh, and the 'y' can vary. An approximate phonetic pronunciation which will serve anyone who can't yet do the 'll' is 'Pont-cuss-ulth-teh'. Da iawn, guys!
@thefloatinghome17

Hello! Thank you for your comment and we are happy you enjoyed the video! We cant believe people used to climb on the OUTSIDE of the railings that's crazy!! Glad our pronunciation is getting better also :)

This episode was soooo good! & LOVED the poem! Lauren I would’ve had a full blown panic attack as well, that is an insane drop off with just a little ledge! Going through the Snoqualmie railroad tunnel on tandem I had my first panic attack, The Mister had to sing to me the whole way through, he sang twinkle twinkle little star over a hundred times till we got through to the other side, me crying the whole time in panic mode, so I can relate to that fear. Safe travels 🥰💕

So incredible. What a journey. I've seen some people canoe or kayak through the canal crossing the valley at Pontcysyllte. They were seated lower, and they were preoccupied with keeping their craft moving (and they didn't mention the gravity flow) So that is another way. I've had panic attacks - the feelings just come out of their own accord. I think I didn't understand how precarious you might feel, at that height, I'm sorry if I minimized those feelings elsewhere. Great idea to pull on the rope. Your poem is heartfelt Adam - really good to hear, especially with the quiet guitar sounds. Please continue to share anytime

At this time of year, leaves on the propeller can slow the boat down. They sink into the water, and build up around the prop and reduce its efficency; it can have quite an effect in slowing you down. Occasionally, give the prop a blast in reverse and that clears the leaves until next time. Great video, lovely countryside, Safe journey

Well done on the improved pronunciation :) Great video as always and on my favourite stretch of canal. You'll notice a massive difference going back as the current really takes you. And no disgrace getting the heebie-jeebies on the aqueduct Lauren as on our crossing I was petrified. That 3 inch edge before the sheer drop actually wobbles if you hit it - that was enough for me to leave it to the wife to steer the boat and walk, sorry guide her, from the footpath, ha ha ha

The part of the world that I call home. That strange country that is neither truly Wales nor truly England. Welsh place in England, English names in Wales. Signposts abound around there with place names that are definitely Welsh and yet .... You can frequently hear Welsh spoken in Oswestry just a few k away (it even has a Welsh language bookshop) and yet it is in England - it has frequently been called "by far the most Welsh town in England!). Now for pronunciation: Pontcysyllte... Split it up into bits: Pont is like the French. Now the cys bit. "c" is always hard in Welsh - more like a K. Now the "y". In the middle of a word (the ending has different rules!) it is pronounced like a "u" as in "but" or "cut". The "s" is like the English "sad". There is now another "u" sound. "ll" you got right in "Llangollen". Now the really tricky bit! The final "te". Oddly I have heard this pronounced two ways: "tay" as in the Scottish River but more commonly as "tuh" sound. So "Pont-kus-u-hull-tuh" and you won't be far wrong. (difficult to map exactly sounds like "ll" into English but you get my drift - pun intended!) The border is actually just where the aqueduct ends on the Chirk side: it was the old course of the Ceiriog which has moved since. The border hasn't ! Of the two aqueducts for scenery, I actually prefer Chirk. The viaduct alongside provides a rather lovely backdrop to the canal, Incidentally: it was the current that saved the canal since it was used as a supply for the Hurleston Reservoirs.
@thefloatinghome17
@thefloatinghome17 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this interesting comment, yes we could really feel this somewhat never region between England and Wales, so much merging and transition has been truly fascinating. I would have to agree that i also preferred the Chirk aqueduct, (The unsung hero) Is what I am referring too it as :)
