A PIECE OF HEAVEN!

Big brook trout are tough to come by, so when you can find several large brook trout in one creek it can be a day to remember! I went out in search of some good water and happened upon this creek on a hike. I went back the next day and decided to fly fish the creek. This is truly a small piece of heaven nestled back in the Appalachian Mountains loaded with brook trout. I have condensed an entire 10 hour fishing tip into around 25 minutes and I hope you enjoy!!

This was one of my favorite videos you have done. The stream was beautiful and the colors of the trout were some of the best I have seen. As a 67 year old it's hard for me to get into these places. Keep doing it so I can too thru your trips...thanks for going over your setup.

The trout at 14:15 experienced a period in its younger life where it was not getting enough food. As a result, it became stunted. Possibly it was trapped in a pool with more aggressive trout. This occurs with aquarium fish as well. The stunted growth is permanent yet the fish continues to grow with a disproportionate body and head. This is common with brook trout because the small bodies of water they inhabit tend to contain very little vegetation or aquatic insect life.

Those are some of the prettiest fish I've seen in a stream. We have some nice coloured trout over here in the UK but those you have there are prettier than ours. Your Creek also reminds me of a stream I have near me in Wales but we have a big problem with otter (Not so much the otter but those who re-introduce them without realising what an apex predator can do without having it's numbers controlled). Great video again. Please keep them coming, our trout season has just finished, so it's great to watch others.

@@hardmanfishing Greetings! There have been a couple of things haunting my mind since seeing this video. First, when I referred to your spot as "Magical" I was not really joking, in a sense. Very few places have been left hidden and very, very few that have a certain "Feeling" when one is there. It seemed almost as if you entered another dimension, suspended in time. This sort of place beckons ghosts and brings to life tales like that of the giant Allegewi who gave their name to the Allegheny Mountains. The Appalachian Range, where you were has its legends as well. In Oregon, where I live the same is true and I do not merely refer to the "Sasquatch" encounters. That's an entirely different subject. Now, getting this train back on the track and, speaking of giants, that deep, deep pool you found just has to hide a big secret. Perhaps it is time to make it your mission to "Release the Kraken!"

I really enjoyed the video! The Brookie with the large head is an old trout .. It's likely his last season, & in the 5 year class .. When they get old, they aren't able to compete with smaller ones that they once dominated .. So they begin losing weight .. I've seen this many times with natives in the 11-13" class, at times a 10", usually late summer/early fall bc of the lack of aquatic insect hatches over the summer .. I've seen it many times with big old Browns, but rainbows to a much lesser extent...They have an extra muscular lobe of flesh absent in Brooks, or Browns, so it's probably not as noticable ... I've heard the tail mark dating story all my life but as far as I've been able to tell, it's not 100%, but will give you an idea that you can't count on as well as just length..(which isn't 100% either lol) .. But a 3.75-4.5" Native Mid Appalachian Brook (Char) is a 2 year old, and believe it or not, most are sexually mature, & able to spawn that 2nd season! Cool video man! 👍🐬🎣🌳🎶😎

@@tumblewheed5994 You're more than welcome my friend .. I've seen this play out with Brook, occasionally Bows, but especially on Browns I've caught several times thru their lifetimes in a stream I flyfish often that's not far from my house.. So often that I have names for several of them lol! It really depends on the stream .. My personal best Native Brook was 16.5", and was heavy and healthy (from a very high water quality stream) .. While others in small freestone streams only live to be 10, 12, & sometimes 13" .. I recognize many of the streams he has filmed bc I know many of them very well .. I'm 62, and have flyfished many of these streams all my life, starting at age 5 with my Dad, & older brother in the mid 1960s .. My wife is a flyfishin widow LoL!

Prior to you telling what your set was, I was and still will comment, if you want to enhance your brookie experience try a full flex 2 WT!!! I’ve had one about 10 years now it’s my go to rod for pretty much everything 8 foot gives you better reach on the small streams that’s a phenomenal Rod! You can fish mine anytime if you like! Keep it up , I’ll be up north after Em pretty soon myself!!!

@@hardmanfishing I just love my 8’ full flex 2wt, but a 10’ rod is killer on a BT stream, just the reach is insane!!! I don’t know why people use 6 foot rods for Brooktrout unless it’s really Squirrley to travel! But a rod is rod so ya still have to deal with it getting tangled.

@tonypana9461
@tonypana9461 10 ай бұрын
Those vertical stripes or blotches are parr marks meaning that that brookie grew very fast, it's probably 10 or 11 inches and still have juvenile parr marks, usually in those apalachian streams when they reach that size they're already fully mature and those marks already desapiered . Beautiful fish !

No one should ever and usually don’t give up spots like this because people who are either bad at handling fish or want to eat them will come over and litter and destroy the population and the creek

Not sure if you have the equipment to do it, but what would be cool is if you were able to get the fish smashing the fly in the areas where you about to sneak up on them. It would be awesome to see the hits in slow motion.

I’d be curious to know what you would catch in that hole if you dropped a worm into it.

Just wondering about the tackle you're using in this video. What size rod, line weight, leader, etc.?

Has your state treated any moving water with known large brown trout populations and restored them to native brook trout that produced large brook trout? I hope my question doesn't sound too complicated haha.

Not really. I mean they've done improvements on brook trout streams to make them more Inhabitable. Several years back they did try to remove brown trout from a few streams but they were met with huge backlash, not to mention it didn't work.

@@hardmanfishing that's really unfortunate.. It would be insane to see these brook trout reach those sizes. My state has done a lot of massive watershed restorations for our native cutthroat populations and a lot of anglers understood. There are waters now with common 20in+ natives and I love it. Over the next 5-10 years they're starting to wind down the program because it has had huge success and many are now 100% wild fisheries!
