Here's a comprehensive suggestion for panoramic/scenic trains in Indonesia. I visited Indonesia a few weeks ago and tried their panoramic/scenic trains. Scenic trains in Indonesia are not limited to the Bandung-Jakarta route. The most beautiful views are located within the southern mainline of the Java region of Indonesian Railways. The train with a panoramic car that goes through this route is called "Argo Wilis", from Bandung to Surabaya. “Argo Wilis” meanders through the southern mainline of the Java rail network and is considered the most scenic train in Java. However, the price of the “Argo Wilis” is also higher (nearly two, three, sometimes even four times) than the panoramic car on the Bandung-Jakarta route such as "Argo Parahyangan" or "Papandayan". Alternatively, the "Papandayan" train which you took has a longer scenic route. The main reason is the "Papandayan" train goes from Jakarta to Garut via Bandung, so Bandung is not the train's terminus. Garut itself is a small city located in southeastern Bandung with little to no tourist attraction. Should you look for the cheapest scenic train experience in Indonesia, consider trying the "Papandayan" train from Jakarta to Garut, don't terminate the journey in Bandung. From my personal experience, I consider the route to be almost on par with "Argo Wilis" but at half the price, so it's the most worthwhile. Lastly, there’s the “Pangandaran” train. Don’t confuse the “Papandayan” and the “Pangandaran” train, both have different names and different routes. The “Pangandaran” goes to Banjar from Jakarta via Bandung. Banjar is a small border city between West Java and Central Java. The scenery of the “Pangandaran” is considered better than the “Papandayan”, but still below "Argo Wilis". Both the “Pangandaran” and “Papandayan” pass through the same route, with the “Pangandaran” taking a slightly longer route than the "Papandayan" and passing what is considered a "heritage" route between Jakarta to Banjar. Since the “Papandayan” and the “Pangandaran” have similar prices, many locals take the panoramic cars of both trains rather than the more expensive “Argo Wilis”, while international tourists prefer the “Argo Wilis” train because it also stops at Yogyakarta, a popular city in Java for tourists. The main challenge should you take the “Pangandaran” train is while the schedule from Jakarta to Banjar is considered convenient, the return schedule from Banjar to Jakarta is rather awkward since there are few daily trains departing from Jakarta to Banjar and vice versa, compared to Jakarta to Bandung or Garut and vice versa. In conclusion, take the all-in experience of “Argo Wilis” for the most scenic views, the “Papandayan” for the most worthwhile, and the “Pangandaran” for the most worthwhile with a slight challenge and charm of its own. Avoiding the traffic jam and of course exact time depart and arrival. Travelling by train you will be paid with a great scenary along the way. All of train class in Indonesia now with AC from the lowest class to the most expensive. In some class with free WiFi on board. Next you must try the Suite class or the Bullet train. Actually there are 4 options to enjoy train travel in Indonesia. 1. Get off at the Jakarta airport, try the airport train to the Jakarta electric train station towards the city, try the Jakarta subway and change to the Jakarta LRT to the Jakarta high-speed train station. 2. From the Jakarta high-speed train station to Bandung. 3. From Bandung, try the panoramic train to Jogyakarta. 3. From the panoramic train from Jogyakarta to Surabaya, try the executive train. 4. From Surabaya back to Jakarta, try the sleeping train all the way to Jakarta.
