I'm guessing that *poryGON* had the following moves: *Double Team* *Mimic* *Rage* / *Bide* / *Psywave* *Zap Cannon* *Bright Powder* must have been its held item, which might explain what *Scientist Roberto* was going for: the evasiveness boosts might have also boosted his ego enough to experiment with *Petal Dance* as it eats two to three turns at the the cost of a single PP, alongside the confusion conclusion being added. And even then, Rage in its first turn (20 BP x 0.5 from STAB, because poryGON = 30 BP) does more damage to *GLOom* than Petal Dance (75 BP / resistance of 4 = 18,75 BP without STAB) so this still mangles my mind.
@IschmarVI2 жыл бұрын
in that case, it would have used zap cannon. Its probably double team, flash and mimic (that trainers' theme is evasion and accuracy). But I have no idea what the fourth move was ... maybe sharpen? Could also be bide over either sharpen or flash I guess.

That moveset would have been impossible on Porygon. They're 100% guaranteed to always have one Normal-type move stronger than 60 base power, so Porygon should always have one of Swift, Take Down, Headbutt, Double-Edge, Hyper Beam, etc.
@ClemehlАй бұрын
It is impossible to have such moveset. The algorithm dictates: *First move:* Strong STAB move. Here it is Swift or Tri-Attack (assuming it is Round 1). On Round 2: Add Double-Edge, Hyper Beam or Take Down. *Second move:* Strong non-STAB move. Here it is Blizzard, Icy Wind, Iron Tail, Psybeam, Psychic or Thunder (assuming it is Round 1). On Round 2: Add Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. *Third move:* Signature move. This trainer focus on Accuracy/Evasion. It picked Double Team. Without signature: a Strong Status (to which Double Team is part of). *Forth move:* - 50% chance: Weak non-STAB move. A Physical move if Attack > Sp. Atk, or Special move if the opposite. - 50% chance: A weak Status move. It picked Mimic. Rage cannot be picked because it is one of the few moves that are removed from the selection pool _(with move such a Dream Eater, Hidden power, Nightmare, Rest, Return, Sleep Talk, Snore or Teleport)._ Bide, Psywave and Zap Cannon cannot be picked because it is in the "Weak Attack" pool. The attacking moves sorted in Strong / Weak are dubious. Icy Wind counts both as Strong and Weak (appears in both lists). The status moves are even weirder. Leech Seed and Lovely Kiss are inside the "Weak" list, while Cotton Spore and Sweet Scent are inside the "Strong" list. I don't know much about the AI in Stadium. Perhaps in Round 1, the Pokémon uses moves at random? But are made more potent in Round 2?

The Pokémon' moves are not completely random. There is an algorithm. I made a short comprehensive guide from what I learnt. First, depending if it is Round 1 or Round 2, the moves picked differ - *Round 1:* Only Level up moves, and TM/HM from Gold and Silver are picked. - *Round 2* _(hard):_ Egg moves, Crystal moveset (move tutor and level-up) and RBY moveset (level up, TM/HM) are added. Then it follow this algorithm (I will pick Porygon as example): *First move:* Pick a "Good" STAB move. _For Porygon (Round 1):_ Tri Attack (Lv. 36) or Swift (TM39). _If Round 2:_ Add Double-Edge (RBY TM10), Hyper Beam (TM15) or Take Down (RBY TM09). _If none found, search for "Bad" STAB, then "Good" non-STAB, then "Bad" non-STAB._ *Second move:* _- If dual-typed:_ Pick a "Bad" attacking STAB move, from a different type than the first move. _- If not: Pick a "Good" a non-STAB attacking move._ _For Porygon (Round 1):_ Blizzard (TM14), Icy Wind (TM16), Iron Tail (TM23), Psy Beam (Lv.12), Psychic (TM29) or Thunder (TM25). _If Round 2:_ Add Ice Beam (Move Tutor) and Thunderbolt (Move Tutor) *Third move:* _- If the opposing trainer has signature move:_ Pick one of them. Here, Roberto is about Evasion/Accuracy moves. Double Team was picked for Porygon. _- If no signature:_ Pick a "Good" status move. *Forth move:* _- 50% of times:_ Pick a "Bad" attacking move from different type, but suiting either the best stats between Attack or Special Attack. _- 50% of times:_ Pick a "Bad" Status move. Here: Mimic was picked for Porygon. The game also tries to increase the odd of "combo". If Move 1, 2 or 3 is something like Petal Dance, Dynamic Punch or Swagger, then the game would add multiples copy of a combo move like Safeguard (for confusion), Mind Reader (for accuracy) or Psych Up (to copy the Attack boost). It can remove an attacking move (for example: Gloom could have Safeguard instead of Acid). Many weak, useless, random or hard-to-use move are removed from the pool selection such as Dream Eater, Hidden power, Nightmare, Rage, Rest, Return, Sleep Talk, Snore or Teleport. I don't know much about the AI in Pokémon Stadium 2. Maybe they pick moves at random on Round 1, then play more strategically on Round 2? In any case, Porygon should have at least Swift as Good STAB move (counted both for Good & Bad move). That is why this outcome is so surprising. It works that way for almost every Pokémon (except Wobbuffet and Ditto). Here, let's see Werster selection: *Magby:* Fire Blast (Good STAB), Psychic (Good non-STAB), Attract (Good Status) and Dynamic Punch (Bad Physical) *Cubone:* Earthquake ( Good STAB), Mega Punch (Good/Bad non-STAB), Substitute (Good Status), Focus Energy (Bad Status) *Gloom:* Petal Dance (Good STAB), Acid (Bad STAB), Swagger (Good Status) and Protect (Bad Status). *Pikachu:* Thunder Punch (Good STAB), Submission (Good/Bad non-STAB), Double Team (Good Status), Mimic (Bad Status) *Azumarill:* Surf (Good STAB), Icy Wind (Good/Bad non-STAB), Toxic (Good Status) and Future Sight (Bad Special). *Yanma:* Wing Attack (Bad STAB, because no Good STAB available), Headbutt (Good non-STAB, as Leech Life is removed from the pool), Swagger (Good Status) and Solar Beam (Good/Bad Special) Wobbufet is forced to have Counter, Mirror Coat, Safeguard and Destiny Bond. For Houndoor, its moveset was probably Crunch, Ember, Double Team and either Solar Beam, Protect (Detect) or, if in Round 2, Spite.

I don't know too much about challenge cup in Stadium 2 and even less about what early gamefreak considered game design, but is it possible that the STAB move it rolled was Snore. It is a completely garbage move but it is STAB then gotten just kinda screwed on the other 3 moves. Like Psych Up or god forbid Sleep Talk for slot 2 as it is a pure normal type. Slot 3 being either a perfered move by the AI or a good status move, something like Toxic which would again fail on a poison type. Then slot 4 picking a bad status move like Nightmare I guess just like this hypothetical Porygon set. Idk I haven't played stadium in a long time and this was thought up by using Bulbapedia to come up with a theory. And if this is wrong and could never happen please tell me because I now just want to know if this atrocity of a porygon can even be brought into existence by Stadium 2.

Snore is not a possible move in Challenge Cup period. So no weak or dumb moves. Except for Metronome, apparently that move isn't dumb enough. Also if your opponent has Spikes they're not going away.
@iss20752 жыл бұрын
@@Weareonenation303 Leech Life is too weak. If they allowed Leech Life then a lot of Pokemon would be FORCED to have an almost useless move on their moveset every time. Any dual Bug-type that doesn't learn Fury Cutter so I think Venomoth and Yanma maybe would have to have it 100% of the time, that would really suck. And Parasect I guess would have it half the time too (it's already forced to always have Fury Cutter I believe). Giga Drain is a good move all things considered, it's not a complete waste most of the time like Leech Life. I've actually found in the ROM where the Challenge Cup move categories are all listed, so I can put Leech Life in the "strong move" category if I want, but I actually pretty much agree with their ban list tbh. Although I do think maybe they could have put Bind, Wrap, Whirlpool, Fire Spin into the "bad non-attacking move" category. And Clamp as well. That would mean they wouldn't waste an attacking move slot, but they have interesting effects with trapping plus recurring extra damage each turn, better than a lot of other non-attacking moves.
