History of one of the most controversial and bizarre stand-up comedy albums of all time. The Day the Laughter Died, by Andrew Dice Clay. Recorded at Dangerfield's in New York in December of 1989, produced by legendary Rick Rubin, it sold hundreds of thousands of copies. Almost 2 hours of unprepared riffing, crowdwork, songs, and all of that in front of just a handful of audience members. Some say it's the greatest comedy album of all times. Others that it's unlistenable garbage. What do you think?

I think he had much of the Archie Bunker effect. I think most people know he was trying to be the worst person on earth. Some people fell for the character. I loved him. This scratched my late-teens/early twenties dark comedy itch like no other. It's funny they mentioned Bill Hicks. He (along with Sam Kinison) was our other comedy hero. Just as dirty, but more cerebral. My buddy and I were lucky enough to have free HBO weekend one summer for the first airing of "HBO Presents: Rodney Dangerield: Nuthin Goes Right" which had Dice, Hicks, and equally hilarious, Robert Schimmel. We were blown away by this special!

Fantastic vid. Only recently came around to ADC being a "character" and testing a meta level. Much like Neil Hamburger does.

I was a big dice fan fan back In the day. That persona he created struck a nerve with young males in the late 80s and was extremely popular. I even loved the adventures of ford fairlane! As goofy as it was. There wasn’t much depth to the dice persona and it seemed to fall off the radar pretty quick. Although I still appreciate him as an actor these days. Superb content , btw. Thank u

Thanks man. I was way too young and way too polish to watch it all unravel at the time. I only know Dice as a kind of a fairy tale, or reference in podcast and old O&A's. But he's an interesting page in stand-up comedy history. Cheers!

Yes he represented an idea, a place and a culture in a certain time, I bought his tape, I listened to it a bunch, but I never liked this guy- I love stand-up, but this felt like one more brick in the Idiocracy wall.
