The whole point of the act was that he was traumatized. That why he hadn't done jokes in 10 years. That's why all of his jokes were old and out of date. That's why he kept slipping and saying the wrong words. Again. I think you're confusing the actual standup comedian and the character he is playing in his act. The ACTOR was not traumatized. The ACTOR did not lose his wife in a fire. The CHARACTER was traumatized. THE CHARACTER was bombing. the fact that the audience was laughing at the comedian is irrelevant. They were laughing at the actor, not the character, whose jokes were not funny.

He was in character the whole time. Part of the humor was the fact his character wasn't very good at being humorous. Kinda the same how Marlin from "Finding Nemo" trying to tell a joke is funny. It's dumb. See, the jokes themselves aren't supposed to be funny He's supposed to bomb. However, what should bring the comedy is his delivery and how FUNNY he bombs, and that's also not there. That's the core of the gig. He does unfunny jokes with an unfunny delivery making for a very bad set. None of this is funny, even though it's supposed to.
