These discussion type things are really great in general. I like hearing more deep cuts on why people think cards are actually good in the grand scale. Most of the time, people are in the moment and talk about why they are doing what they doing right now on stream when they talk about stuff like this, so it's nice to see you take a step back and actually talk it over. Talking about boar, they literally banned Switcheroo because of the Darkness/Boar combo, that would have still been possible even with the Switcheroo nerf, so Boar’s in a state where supporting cards just make it too much, but because it’s a legacy card they don’t want to remove Boar from the game. I see the logic in demon seed being busted and banned. But imo Demon Seed supported Dark Glare extremely heavily so I think more or less dark glare was the issue , and not Demon seed although QuestLine Warlock was insane. My only problem with this video, that from 10 cards there is only one litterally card - Shadowstep. Every over card requires to build deck around them, so a single card is not that good. Dekkster mentioned Zilliax, but he didn't added it to the list, but this is the one best card indeed, because you could slap it in almost every deck and this made deck better. But maybe I just got the video wrong: I've expected to see cards like Cobold Librarian, Branching Paths, Ice Block or even Blood Mage Thalnos - cards that are (or was) so good and so powerful that litteraly every deck benefits from them.
@Kersakofu2 жыл бұрын
I think there should be a best of wild and best of standard. You can do each standard rotation separately. There are many old cards still played in wild, like Lotheb. Baku/Genn I'd say are together since start of game effects are mostly them. I know this video was just gauging interest, but best card is hard to really pick. Things like dominated their set rotation or how long have they seen consistent play in wild would be easier to top 5.

I guess if that were my list I would pick Baku, Prince Renathal, Ice Block, the Demon seed and Brann Bronzebeard as my top 5. Honestly, I am surprised no one mentioned Ice Block. That card is more important to the class than shadowstep is for rogue. Rogue had a lot of agressive decks that just didn't run shadow step. Mage, on the other hand, has never given up Ice Block while it had a chance to play in any given format. Even agressive decks like secret mage in wild still runs Ice Block (a stall card) because it's just that good.

The Caverns Below, Jade Golem (package), Shudderwock, Incanter's Flow, Gadgetzan Auctioneer Every single one was part of a completely oppressive and hated meta deck, sometimes more than that (Auctioneer), and all of them were nerfed severely, or even nerfed multiple times. Except Jade Druid which was power crept over the top of, but still managed to make a 6 mana 4/6 Ghoul tech card a common 2-of in the meta because even Knights of the Frozen Throne could not keep Jade Druid down. When players play a terrible card just for your matchup, and your deck is STILL a top tournament contender, I think Jade Golems earn a slot. Jade Golems were the first massive power creep that crashed the game, so badly that they printed pre-nerf The Caverns Below.

Maybe not the "most powerful" but The Best Designed card is, in my opinion, Defile. It encompasses everything about how a card should be. At its worst it is just a 2 mana Whirlwind (which is horrible, especially for Warlock, who's got zero zelf-damaging mininons sinergy), but at it's best it is a 2 mana Twisting Nether that clears tokens. Its power is solely based on your own skill (it is not a winmore card that you just slam and win; you have to actually make critical decision, arithmetical computations and optimal plays/trades for it to payoff). It destroys opponent's aggro archetype, can't be played in an aggro deck (punishing aggro is always healthy), while simultaneously being an incredible control tool - I might be biased but I always thought control metas were best, where a bad decision could come and bite you 10 turns later and you actually got to play the game instead of dying (or conceading, knowing you already lost) on turn 4. In a similar fashion but with slightly different play strategies, Risky Skipper is also a beautifuly well designed card.

Renathal is one of those cards that got released when all its competition got removed from the game. Interesting video, I think all picks here have their merits and I personally agree with Dekkster's weird list, Baku (and Genn) had an enormous impact on the game and cards like Zilliax saw play across many many years, I personally would have added Loatheb and Sorcerer's Apprentice since the first still sees play today in Wild and is still capable of ending games on the spot and the second is one of the most nerfed cards of all time for a reason. I also would've picked an unusual card for this type of discussion and that's Deathstalker Rexxar, while it definitely was never "broken" on the same level of most cards here I think it sort of marked the beginning of a new era for the game, it was the first ever "infinite value in one card" card and I believe it is the reason powercreep started increasing more and more from Kobold and Catacombs onward, it was unplayable during Frozen Throne as Hunter was the only class that had zero viable non-aggro decks, it started seeing play with the release of the Spell Hunter archetype in KnC, it would have dominated the meta if Odd Paladin didn't exist during Witchwood and that entire year in general thanks to Vicious Scalehide and Rush (and Poisonous though it was not new) being in the Zombeast pool, basically that card was the first one that forced the game to spiral into infinite powercreep, culminated with United in Stormwind aka the absolute worst expansion released so far. Lastly, small correction, Zephrys is currently broken in Wild (as in it doesn't really work properly) so it doesn't actually see play in 100% of Highlander decks
@insomniacnerd55922 жыл бұрын

This would be sick if you guys went through and drafted a class. After the draft those are the cards you get to use in a game against each others deck

I like the video and basic idea, and I think Rarran and Dekkster have some nice chemistry, but I feel it's a bit of a questionable concept in a number of ways, because "best" (as was sort of hinted at during the video, actually) is pretty difficult to define. Is the "best" card the "most well-liked", or "most fun"? Is it the "best-designed"? Is it the "best" from a gameplay standpoint, a vague notion at best? And for any of those, you could have varying interpretations of even those definitions. "Best-designed", for instance, could mean that it has the best coherence between its flavor and its effect, maybe even its associated aesthetics - like the original Lord Jaraxxus - or it could mean that it's very balanced while still being very playable - Loot Hoarder, perhaps - or that it's the healthiest for the game, or it could mean that it has the most interesting effect, the one where the devs really took advantage of Hearthstone's digital format (e.g. Yogg-Saron which would be impossible to play in a physical game). Meanwhile, "best" from a gameplay standpoint (which kinda sounds like what Rarran meant) could also mean different things. Is it the "best" in a vacuum - something like Zilliax or Zephrys, which are strong effects no matter when you play them? Is it the "best" mathematically, as in best winrate when drawn or when put in decks - like Evolve for a time? Is it the "best" in terms of how popular it is, or how much it's played, and how much it's kept seeing play over time - Shadowstep of course, but also stuff like Ice Block or, in fact, a large number of Classic cards? In that case, is it noted for its reliability, or just for "feeling good" when you play it? Does the "best" mean "the most problematic", or "meta-warping", card, as Rarran sort of pointed to with Demon Seed (and Dekkster with Baku)? Because at the end of the day, depending on your definition, this list could vary wildly in terms of direction. If we go for the "popularity" route: Brann, I would say, most definitely goes above the Demon Seed (and maybe even above Patches, given the respective lengths they've been in the game) in terms of how many decks have played him over the course of the game, if only because he's Neutral and the Demon Seed is Class-only. Which is also a problem with Shadowstep, which probably has seen less overall play than something like Doomsayer - or Stonetusk Boar, realistically. If, on the other hand, we go for the "strong" in terms of deck performance route, then it seems strange to include Yogg, while not including cards like Ice Block, or Tunnel Trogg, or Sunkeeper Tarim. Also, there are some strange choices here - Rarran stated that it was a stronger argument if cards still saw play today in Wild, but neither Demon Seed nor Yogg do, and Demon Seed is unplayable in Standard. Like you can make the argument that Demon Seed would probably see play _if it was in Standard,_ but that's a hypothetical, while we _know_ of Wild Cards that see consistent play today, like Open the Waygate, or Loatheb (either of which would probably be fine contenders, along with the aforementioned Ice Block). It kinda feels like Rarran was partly utilizing Demon Seed's playability before it got banned, in which case it feels like Undertaker, or Corridor Creeper, or Giggling Inventor, or Spreading Plague, would all belong on this list in their OG forms.

I think the best card is Magma Rager. I mean, who haven't heard of this card, it has 5 attack and is the original Rager which give birth to all the other Rager. In fact, sometimes, your opponent (especially mages) loves it and is happy when you play it or randomly summon it from another card effects. You know the card is the best if everyone loves it including opponent. And do I really need to factor in the design too? The design is so hot, like hot molten Magma.

well if i would participate in this without picking the same cards i would go: 1-bloodrever guldan: arguably the best thing you can play at turn 10 and i don't think cubelock (one of the greatest warlock decks) would exist without him 2- loatheb: i don't think i need to talk about him but to this day lotheb is still the best counter against spells 3- ice block - sorcerer apprentice: these 2 goes together the ability to buy guaranteed extra turns and then combo is so frustrating. 4- i ran out of ideas but original equality: i cant believe it costed 2 mana and still see play at ... its 4 mana i think idk still really good card 5- hesitant between shudderwock or genn but im gonna go for genn it's enough to mention that even shaman is still being played in wild

i think Shudderwock and pre nerfed Corridor creeper were definitely missing from this list. Shudder literally broke the client when it was released and still to this day in wild is played. And Corridor was literally a free 5/5 most of the time, it's similar to patches, most decks were running it

1 = Patches vs. Baku, I would say good two picks, but definitely Patches. 2 = Demon Seed vs. Brann, obvious Demon Seed. 3 = Yogg vs. Renathal, I would say for third pick this is very weak, but yeah Renathal is probably better than Yogg. 4 = Shadow Step vs. N'Zoth, ridiculous picks for forth best card, yes Shadow Step is good, been around forever, but not even close to be worth of the forth spot... with that said, N'Zoth as forth? He would MAYBE be at the top 100... 5 = Boar vs. Zephrys, Obviously Zephrys, Boar is a ok pick, but not for 5 position... maybe 20... ~How did you guys did not talked about pre nerf Warsong Commander, Patron Warrior would had 100% winrate if everyone who played it knew how to pilot the deck... they had to ban her to oblivion in order to not make more problems, even the devs agreed she was injusticed... ALSO no pre nerf Undertaker, it was so broken, you knew you lost the game turn 1... it was retarded.
