In this review, Kirby takes a look at the amazing Gaziano & Girling Burnham Chelsea boot.
In the first review of a boot so far, Kirby goes into all the details about what makes this classic boot so impressive.
Chelsea Boots are exceptional choices for those who want a more casual shoe that are insanely comfortable and perfect for wearing with jeans. Chelsea boots get their name from the hip kids in the Chelsea neighborhood of London who popularized them in the 1960’s and are often closely associated with the Beatles, who wore them often. The most defining characteristic of a Chelsea boot is the whole cut construction and elastic side panels, which combine to make a pair of shoes that are easy to put on and take off and exceptionally comfortable. For this reason, Chelsea boots are favorites among those who travel or walk a lot.
The Gaziano & Girling Burnham Chelsea Boot, made on the DG 70 last is, as one would expect from Gaziano & Girling, an absolutely beautiful example and is quite unique in that it is cut from a single piece of leather, with no side seam.
The Burnham Chelsea Boot in the DG70 last is a beautiful boot. The soft, round toe of the DG70 is elegant yet modern at the same time, while the simple wholecut construction without any medallion makes this a simple, yet sleek shoe. What makes this boot special, though, is the one-piece construction, which is technically very expensive and difficult to achieve. Most RTW Chelsea boots have one to two side seams, which make the upper easier to shape. The one-piece construction requires the uppers to be soaked in water to soften the leather and then blocked in order to create the shape. The result, as you can see though, is worth the extra effort.
As with all Gaziano & Girling shoes, no effort is spared in the construction and finishing of these shoes. The factory’s ability to consistently produce outstanding quality and construction is the work of Dean Girling, whose work as a bespoke shoemaker has allowed him to have an incredible insight and control over the production of a larger number of shoes. It is his insight into bespoke construction that when combined with Tony’s design aesthetic successfully closes the gap between RTW and Bespoke.
