In this review, Kirby takes a look at the amazing Gaziano & Girling Burnham Chelsea boot.
In the first review of a boot so far, Kirby goes into all the details about what makes this classic boot so impressive.
Chelsea Boots are exceptional choices for those who want a more casual shoe that are insanely comfortable and perfect for wearing with jeans. Chelsea boots get their name from the hip kids in the Chelsea neighborhood of London who popularized them in the 1960’s and are often closely associated with the Beatles, who wore them often. The most defining characteristic of a Chelsea boot is the whole cut construction and elastic side panels, which combine to make a pair of shoes that are easy to put on and take off and exceptionally comfortable. For this reason, Chelsea boots are favorites among those who travel or walk a lot.
The Gaziano & Girling Burnham Chelsea Boot, made on the DG 70 last is, as one would expect from Gaziano & Girling, an absolutely beautiful example and is quite unique in that it is cut from a single piece of leather, with no side seam.
The Burnham Chelsea Boot in the DG70 last is a beautiful boot. The soft, round toe of the DG70 is elegant yet modern at the same time, while the simple wholecut construction without any medallion makes this a simple, yet sleek shoe. What makes this boot special, though, is the one-piece construction, which is technically very expensive and difficult to achieve. Most RTW Chelsea boots have one to two side seams, which make the upper easier to shape. The one-piece construction requires the uppers to be soaked in water to soften the leather and then blocked in order to create the shape. The result, as you can see though, is worth the extra effort.
As with all Gaziano & Girling shoes, no effort is spared in the construction and finishing of these shoes. The factory’s ability to consistently produce outstanding quality and construction is the work of Dean Girling, whose work as a bespoke shoemaker has allowed him to have an incredible insight and control over the production of a larger number of shoes. It is his insight into bespoke construction that when combined with Tony’s design aesthetic successfully closes the gap between RTW and Bespoke.

J.M. Weston has also had a Chelsea Boot cut from a single piece of leather for quite awhile. No since the 30s though, but I own the Weston's and they are quite beautiful and comfortable. I think Kirby doesn't know about these other brands because he's too wrapped up in sponsorship with GG.

First of all thank you very much for your very interesting web site. Concerning Tony Gaziano’s assertion related to G&G iconic model “Burnham”, a whole-cut elastic sided chelsea boots in your other video dedicated to the Savile Row Shop: “We are probably the only luxury manufacturer on a ready-to-wear level that does it without the seam down the middle…” you advocate in your present video more discreetly. I would to precise that it’s partially correct because some manufacturers provide Whole-Cut Boots models as G&G. It’s also true and just as surprisingly, luxury brands, recognised in the comparable segment than G & G and at very comparable or even higher prices, did not have this exigency of this “whole-cut” feature for their own models. It should be noted, however, that two French brands had this comparable requirement. In any case, bravo to G & G who dusted this sector without being too “extravagant” as brands quite young as they have decided to position themselves. Bravo to your commitments and your elegant gait. For the RM Williams fans, these boots are not the same. True they're both whole cut and handmade, my RM's are fantastic but these G&G boots are on another level. Look at the sole construction, the sole on RMs have visible stitching and are relatively flat. Are the G&G boots worth four times the cost of RMs? Not sure, you be the judge on the cost/value, but they are on another level in construction to RMs.

Kirby seeing if you can give me some recommendations on some shoes. I'm a big guy that wears a 12E shoe. I have back issues so I'd prefer something with a rubber sole. The most comfortable dress shoes that I have worn so far are the Allen Edmonds badlands with the rubber sole. I'm seeing if you can recommend anything else that has a rubber sole that is comfortable. For me a budget of $500 is around where I would top out for budget. Thanks so much. Steve from Medford Oregon

I have never been a fan of Chelsea boots. The elastic has always seemed like a low quality material to me that has no place in a high quality shoe/boot. These look beautiful and I'm sure they are of exceptional quality, but I just cannot get my head around the elastic.

@@sli8361 I agree that $600 is not cheap for a pair of shoes. Let me clarify my statement because after rereading it I realize it was a stupid comment. Most brands do not give you shoe trees, you have to buy them, but, in my opinion, a quality shoe brand should at least have a shoe tree available that fits that shoe. That being said, many good brands just don't make shoe trees for boots. I have a pair of Chelsea Boots from J.M. Weston and although I had to pay extra for the shoe trees, they did make ones specifically for the Chelsea boot. All that being said: You can easily look online and find shoe trees that fit a variety of boot sizes. I have never used this product, but a quick search online and I found this: www.woodlore.com/shoe-trees-inserts/mens-cedar-shoe-trees/the-boss-boot-tree/

How formal the black chelsea boots could be, as equal as cap toe derby?
@MrSlitskirts
@MrSlitskirts 4 жыл бұрын
Hi yes, they can be worn with full business attire (Suit & Tie) and Black Tie/Dinner Jacket (Tuxedo), since you only see the bottom of the boot below the trousers. You'd use Black Shoe Creme (Waproo Renovation Polish (an Australian brand) or the more expensive Black Saphir Creme) and Black Wax Polish such as Kiwi Black Parade Gloss or Saphir Black Mirror Gloss for the final buff and shine. I have a pair of black RM Williams 'Tambo' (extra wide 'Craftsman') Chelsea style boots which have the angular 'chisel edge' shaped toe, so the toe shape looks more like formal business shoes (Oxford's, Derby's, Blucher's) as opposed to their round shaped 'Comfort Turnout' model. I wear them with jeans/smart casual, business casual, formal, etc. waproo.com.au/products/renovating-polish/ www.kiwicare.com/en-au/products/kiwi-parade-gloss-shoe-polish www.rmwilliams.com.au/my-rm-s/mens-boots?lang=en_AU Kind regards.

RM Williams are always going to be the benchmark and Rolls Royce of chelsea boots. I’ve worked in designer fashion and the workmanship of construction of a quality pair of chelsea boots is around £350-£450 retail price, and any price above is literally rare material costs like ostrich (which are usually not as hardwearing) and bs marketing. Don’t for one minute think that the more expensive something is, the more quality is it, because the exact same level of craftsmanship goes into every pair. All Gaziano & Girling’s footwear are overpriced.
