As a 74 y/o 17 handicap 85 mph swing speed player, I have found that the golf balls that work best for my game are whatever balls my kids/grandkids give me for my birthday or Christmas.

I've been playing golf ever since 1968. I've played at the pro level. So I'm going to add my opinion. I'm going to refer to normal golfers, not those with medical handicaps, etc. If you are playing over a 15 handicap, then you don't have the playing skills, control or feel to make good use of the high end ball such as a Pro-V1 or TP5. Save your money and stick with the likes of Bridgestone Precept Laddies and Callaway Supersoft. They are cheap and provide some feel. If you play between 14 and 9, you can afford to be more picky. Use a ball that has a compression compatible with you swing speed. You can also be picky about the softness of the outer layer, 2 piece, 3 piece ball etc. If you play in single digits, I recommend you buy the highest quality balls on the market that will best suit your game. The only way to determine that is by trial and error. Also, take geography into consideration. Are you playing hardpan courses like in Texas? Or are you playing up north on soft bent greens. Are you playing in windy conditions all the time or hardly any. ie. a high trajectory ball or a low screamer. Are the greens on your home course soft or rock hard? ie. rock hard greens might require a soft cover ball in order to have good spin control. Soft greens where you are repairing deep pitch marks might allow you to get away with a harder skinned ball - Srixon Q Star vs Q Star tour or Pro-V1x vs Pro-V1. cold winter conditions require a softer lower compression ball. So have a winter ball and a summer ball. It's best to consult a PGA Pro on your game. Basically, it'll come down to trial and error with what works best for you on your course. Keep a notebook and write notes on which ball you used on which course, pluses and minuses.

Documentation of your changes, results, feel, weather, etc... will help more than anything. Most will realize whatever golf ball they play with the most is best for them. Most of your expensive balls are total bs, and make zero difference in your game realistically... There is such a thing as the placebo effect, so if buying the most expensive bs makes you feel good then go for it. Falling for the lies can help mentally, but not realistically/physically. Pro v1 have pro's hitting them, and they make bad shots that make zero sense regularly... Probably not the best or even close if pros aren't hitting them perfectly more often. Just because a company pays more in advertising doesn't mean they're the best or even close. Titleist and any other gimmicky type ball should be avoided, unless they're free or paying you. Do not spend $50+ on golf balls unless you can 100% buy into the bs and receive the benefits of the placebo.

Great point! I float around 105 mph with the big stick but yet my ball of choice is the Chrome soft, less side spin, good distance. I have played the higher compression golf balls and for me the higher compression a golf ball has the more side spin it could generate off the big stick, not all, but most. They are doing some amazing things with golf balls these days to manage the spin/distance on all clubs in the bag. I prefer a softer feeling ball that gives me the distance of a higher compression ball. I’m pumped to see what Callaway developed with the new line of Chrome soft balls, the new tour ball could be the best of both worlds. Great video guys!

Interesting! I am a slow swinger and have tested several “soft balls”. For me Callaway Chrome Soft is shortest of them of the driver. Srixon Q-star Tour is a rather good ball for me. For me Titleist AVX is the longest and best overall ball. Great feel! Maybe a little low flight. TaylorMade Tour Response fly higher, but is shorter from tee. There is a lot more than compression to consider, such as feel/sound, flight, spin and look. And price. And brand, possibly. I am 60+ with a swing speed below 80 mph.

I am 85 years old. My swing speed has now dropped to 84+- mph. I have experimented with balls. The less expensive ball just done give more yardage. Pro V1 is the best even for my swing speed. I tried the pro V1x. at the end of last year and was getting slightly more distance with it,(3-5 yards). I would like to see a test with speeds from 94 to 80 mph. My testing was actual distance using my radar for swing speed. I heard, but do not know for sure, that on the ladies tour many are using the Titleist prov1x

I have a good short game and wanted green-side spin, the Titleist ball fitter said I should give up the distance with the driver for the spin around the green and use a Pro V1. I'm happy to see you verified a mid priced ball, like the Taylor MadeTour Response, which I use, still gives me the spin I need with the added distance.

I do have a slower swing speed and this ball I saw the results on the course vs playing the cheaper ball in Mizuno or Callaway Warbirds. Now that I know the Q Star Tour is my go to I’m only putting it against the Titleist AVX and Bridgestone RXS for competition. Looking forward to what works best for me. I agree with trying different brands of balls. I myself have done this and have found that it really does make a difference when you compare your current ball to a different brand you wouldn’t think of using. You will notice a difference in your distance and feel around the greens. It will take time, but you will find the ball that best fits your game. Good luck.

Hey...don't hate on the Nitros. They have their place in my bag...usually reserved for forced carry over water. lol I played them exclusively as a newbie not knowing how many balls I would be losing a round. Only after figuring out I'm not going to lose as many as I thought have I ventured out to other balls. My favorites are Srixon Soft Feel (mid-irons), Volvik Vivid (chipping, even though it feels like I'm hitting a chunk of ice), and Bridgestone RBX (off the tee). I play the cheaper balls on first few visits to a new course and temps. For putting practice, I have some TourResponse...that stripe is perfect to figure out how I'm putting that day. Makes it very easy to dial in on the practice green before a round.

I'm in my early 70s with a swing speed of about 90, maybe a little higher on a good day. I got ball fitted and was recommended the Taylormade TP5x because I could use more spin, especially since our club has firm greens that are fast and hard to hold. On very windy days however, I like the Bridgestone BX. I think that an underappreciated issue is how a ball comes off the putter face. Some balls roll significantly longer or shorter than other balls with the same stroke, plus there is a big range of feel between some balls.

Nice. I figured out myself that my 93mph swing is best served with a slightly over 70 compression ball. The Srixon divide was just too loud for me, the tour response stripe is really great. Alignment is obviously super, and luckily if the stripe is facing the wrong way between tee to green it doesn't distract me (phew) Agree that if you do hit the middle pretty OK, go for a urethane cover if you can. Z-star (without the XV) is still pretty soft by the way, would not compare it to Prov1

I previously used to use the QStar divide but after I upgraded to a Bettinardi putter then I didnt care for the divide anymore on the green based on the feel off the putter. The higher quality putter gave more feedback and can definitly tell the difference. Gave the vice pro a try and am pleased with it. It is also a 3 peice urethane cover but not the matt finish which has mixed reviews on its pros/cons versus the traditional finish. Also was able to get a few dozen on clearance at Sams club after christmas for a steal so that was also a win. But the two are comparable in price and characteristics.

Last fitting swing low to mid 90. Played original Q star 3 or 4 years ago and loved it. Switched between that a z star depending on what was on offer. Been playing tour response especially the stripe which is so good for putting alignment feels like i cant miss. Middle of winter here so course short and very wet and found Q star tour divide for £20 per dozen, absolute bargain and enough to pay for winter golf. Orange and yellow better visibility from distance on green than blue and yellow, they seem to disappear if they land blue side up until you get closer. Right in what you are saying better distance and feel from softer ball at my speed. Jason Shaw hi 4.5 Yorkshire UK

If we're talking about average speeds, then here I am: ~95mph with driver, ~80 mph with 7-iron. 4 hcp. I've done a lot of testing with my LaunchPro and played many, many, MANY rounds with all kinds of balls, from Left Dash to Supersoft. Firmer golf balls travel further with driver, but it's not by a lot - the Left Dash and the Vice ProPlus are the only ones I've played that are longer by any substantial amount (meaning by more than 5 yards or so), and they are very firm. But firmer balls are considerably shorter with irons. They spin more and I don't generate the speed needed to get them to their window - you have to hit a firmer ball harder to get it to go with an iron. I do tend to get very consistent distances with tour balls, however, partly I think because the firmer balls have better consistency of spin, which helps with distance control. I just don't have the length to be giving up 7+ yards on every iron shot. The sweet spot for me is around 70-80 compression. This includes Bridgestone BRX, Taylormade Tour Response, Oncore Elixir, Callaway ERC Soft, Titleist Tour Soft, Vice Pro Soft, and several others I can't think of. These balls are just firm enough to not lose much or any distance off the tee, but soft enough to get a nice healthy flight and pick up distance with irons. Well, with every other club other than driver, really. The lower spin of these balls doesn't affect my game - I don't carry a 60° wedge and I do most of my short game low and running with pitching wedge, 9-iron, 52° and occasionally 58°.

Let’s just say 85 is the most common score for slightly above average golfer. 85 freaking shots, 14 max are used with driver. I believe people fit their golf ball around the driver instead of what they should be doing and that’s fitting their game to iron swing speeds, common sense

Great vid as usual, this just shows that ball fitting is just as important as club fitting. Not ever ball will work for every player. I myself have experimented with a lot of higher end balls, I tend to generate higher spin naturally so I try to go with lower spin balls. I found for myself with an average driver swing speed of 108 mph that the Bridgestone Tour B X I tend to get the best performance all around. Pro V1X for me is a close second with TayloMade TP5 a distant 3rd. I don't get along with Srixon or Callaway in any version for some reason that I haven't figured out yet.

There are simply too many variables to answer this question by swing speed alone. Driver loft, swing speed, delivery, angle of attack, etc etc. all play a part in an informed ball choice. And that means getting fitted. I’m a 5 handicap with a low swing speed of 92mph average driver. 70mph 7 iron. TP5x has been the best performer for me from fairway to green. I fell for the old slow speed soft ball adage for years and used Wilson soft balls. The difference when I switched to TP5, ProV1 and the X versions was dramatic. If in doubt, get fitted. But there is no one size fits all by swing speed. Golf is far too subtle a game for simple answers like that.

Great video guys. I tested the Wilson Triad vs Srizon Q Star Tour Divide 2023 models for a few rounds, I shot my best round so far with the Q stars, but they roll out a lot more on chip shots. The cover on the (pre-2024) divides feels a lot less grippy and a lot harder than the Triad, ProV1x and other premium urethane covers. The triads check up nicely on chip shots and greenside bunker shots, the divides roll out 2yards further, usually costing me another putting stroke. On driver, swing speed 115mph, the Qstars also feel weak while the Triads explode off the face with a great sound and feel. This is why the Triads are staying in my bag. For these new 2024 divides Srixon claims a stickier urethane cover, can you guys back this claim up?

I hit the ProV1's (yellow) and I've never hit farther and straighter. And also get a few more yards out of my irons. I now carry both balls in my bag. Premiuming (Tour) golf balls are better for everyone if you can afford them. Yes you may lose a little distance in some cases, however anyone that knows golf knows your shots to the green and around the green is where you score. And the premium balls are far superior at this. And all the premiums come in soft and harder which is usually designated by an X. And I know for a fact that the softest ball made by Taylor Made is their TP5 at a 50 compression which is their tour ball.

I am 65 years old and do not see a huge difference in balls. I have played under par with a top flight XL5000 and with tour quality balls. I find the tour quality promote more confidence and consistency. My swing speed is between 96 and 104 mph. Smash factor of 1.42. Handicap around 6. It boils down to how much your trust the ball to stop on the green for myself.

When I got into golf(three years ago), I played Callaway Super Soft Red Matte balls(AYO). Last year I switched to Callaway Chrome Soft X and sometimes I’ll use X(LS). The Red Matte were the softest feeling when I would flush them. Once I got hip to distance, spin, and all the other stats balls do, I upgraded to the Chrome Softs and noticed a huge gain in distance and spins. I’ll try the Q Star as my swing speed for irons is hovering around 90MPH when I’m on. If I baby swing it’s around 80. Thanks for this informative video👊🏽🏌🏽

I play with the Kirkland balls from Costco. They're a 90 compression ball with a urethane cover, and at £30 for *TWO* dozen balls I think they're excellent value for the average golfer. They last pretty well too. Tomorrow I'll be playing my 6th game in a row with the same ball which hardly has a mark on it.

@@Tin5674 Thanks, I know, but they stop very quickly on the greens! Sure, distance is affected by the spin and there's not much runout on the fairways right now as it's winter here and no one is getting runout. I normally hit up quite a bit so I'm used to no runout and base my course management on carry, not total distance. The Kirklands are fine for me. If I were a very low handicapper and 40 years younger I might think differently. 🙂

Looking at two independent, comprehensive and controlled robot testing of major golf ball models provides the following data: Todays Golfer (UK) 85 mph Driver Speed Srixon Q Star Tour - Carry Distance 193.1 yds Titleist Pro V1 - Carry Distance 193.0 yds My Golf Spy (USA) 85mph Driver Speed Srixon Q Star Tour - Carry Distance 188.14 yds Titleist Pro V1 - Carry Distance 193.41 yds Of course there are many personal preferences in golf ball selection including price, softer feel etc, however based on the data above, the cheaper ball will not provide extra distance for the slower swing speed golfer, in fact you may well lose distance.

@@embersgolf Different robots, climates, altitude, conditions will provide different results. The important point is consistency of testing with each independent test. Have a read of the methodology used and gain an appreciation of the time, effort, money spent and the expert scientists and researchers involved on the websites for Today's Golfer and My Golf Spy. The results show that certainly the softer, cheaper balls are available that will provide similar ballpark distance to the "Tour ball" for the slower swing speed player, however they will certainly not provide the extra 5 to 10 yards distance as suggested. The obvious suggestion is to make another video with a slow swing player around 85mph Driver speed on your simulator using a Titleist Pro V1 vs a Srixon Q Star Tour see what the results provide.

After watching this review, I think I might need to put a little more thought into what ball I use. My Pings are also 20 years old and I play with an R7 from 2004 and all work fine for me. Good advice. Thank you, but I think you could have gone a little deeper into this topic. The “average golfer” is a high handicap that doesn’t hit straight. Most swings are over the top and slicing. So aside from swing speed, I believe a ball that spins more also would produce more side spin and make that slice worse. If correct, might that Q-Star Tour also be the better ball selection because it spins less off the tee and therefore helps keep the ball in play? And I REALLY dislike the optics of the Divide. 🤮 That Q-Star Tour comes in plain white and yellow too. ( WHAT! No hot pink?! 😮 )

Not sure the guys have complete grasp on what causes spin. Low compression is usually lower spin on full shots as they demonstrated (with same cover). Energy either compresses or goes into spin. A flyer is lower spin so those insisting on higher compression with slower iron speeds are costing iron distance with higher spin tour balls. I use low comp. in wet conditions to get more iron carry and to not spin back too much. With firm greens, premium std versions can be used by lots of folks, for stopping, not distance. Qstars are a nice compromise. IMO, X premium versions feel terrible for chipping and putting... like top flights from the 90's. I suppose a soft putter insert is a way to cope with that. Super softs putt nicely on really fast greens... but don't have the full iron stopping power.

I'm sorry… But very little of this video added up. First you said a person with a swing speed of less than 95 miles an hour would benefit from a softer ball, but offered no proof. In your demonstration you both admit you're well over that 95 mile an hour threshold (100+), and it was the firmer golf ball that performed better. You would've done much better for yourself if you could've actually had somebody with a slower swing speed do this demonstration. I have a 93 mile hour swing speed and have hit the duo soft which is the softest golf ball out there and the Tour Response. Both of these were surpassed by the ProV1xleft - which I now use. My second choice is the Tour Response. This ball is only slightly off distance wise from the Left-. I will agree that there is a significant difference between the tour response and the left - golf ball pricewise. However, just like you said in the video with the left - off the driver, I am a 7 maybe 8 iron to the green versus a 6 iron with the tour response on a par 4.
