For the backwards cap to be most beneficial, it must be large enough to pull down over your eyes with 'battle vision slits' cut into it. This reduces peripheral distractions as well as aids in eye protection for those random seven foot direct reversal ricochets on the battlefield. You can buy them pre-slitted, but the most effective ones are those hand cut with ragged edges because the fraying edges camouflage the intended usage. Many matches are one prior to the first shot by the coolness factor of those eye slits. Especially so for the angled ones giving the appearance of a Samurai Rapper. Try it. It will definitely raise you mark average.

Only just got into darts and I do play a different version. In the version I play there are 3 additional categories (triples, doubles and beds(3 darts in single number vector and doesnt matter if doubles or triples). This changes or complicates logic because you dont necessarily lose hits eg hitting a triple can be taken as a triple. I appreciate the advice about not chasing and have naturally gravitated towards it in some circumstances. One of my friends when partnering is super keen to close down the higher number to reduce the chance of opposition scoring rather than score on a slightly lower number. I am always keen to get a little ahead on the scoreboard because having triples/doubles/beds options enhance the scoring possibilities.

Chasing is cricket seems to be a disease with new players. I have personally taught many players this game. They listen to me and do the exact opposite. Their biggest excuse is “well I don’t want you to rack up points against me”! That feels like an understandable excuse but it is still wrong. The ONLY way you can loose in Cricket is if you shoot less marks per round than you opponent or you chase the entire game. Great video as always.

THIS! It all boils down to playing well. As i was saying on another comment, I could play against a 2mpr player and it doesn't matter what I throw at. I could start on the 15's and still win. My favorite game by far followed by 301 double in and out. To me 501 can become rather tedious if you're not as accomplished a shooter and/or you're not averaging above 80 at the least. Plus just throwing at the triple 20 over and over again is a bit boring. If you throw at one number over and over you can get really dialed in but then change levels and see what happens lol. Cricket and 301 are far more fun and quick paced and there's a nice level of strategy and challenge these games, especially cricket, present to me more so than 501. Me and my dart bros tend to play 301, cricket and then choice of either in the deciding leg. Its goes a lot quicker and each player is able to get into a rhythm and the darts tend to be off the charts for both players because of that. Some of the greatest legs I've ever thrown wer in this format.

You can never lose cricket if you have more points than your opponent. When new players ask me about pointing I tell them I try to stay at least 4 marks ahead. I like to think 01 requires more skill to hit top marks where cricket requires more strategy. Different type of video, but informative and entertaining as usual.
@WorldwideDarts2 жыл бұрын
Question for you... it's easy to tell someone to stay 4 marks ahead but how is that possible in real life? What if you have someone simply playing better than you? This is the part of cricket debate I've never understood to be honest. I mean, it sounds good to say that but again, it's ONLY possible if you're playing better than the opponent. So that's not a strategy at all. I do think that not chasing is a strategy. I also think if you need 3 singles to win a leg of cricket it's a strategy to aim for the fat part of the single instead of the triple. But other than that there isn't anything strategic you can do to win a leg of cricket. There's no magic formula you can do to overcome someone throwing better than you.
@jeffreymeiman71142 жыл бұрын
@@WorldwideDarts All of which is true. If you are playing someone better than you, you try to make every dart count. Three fat in some levels is a good throw. Which is what I would say to a beginner. I also say 2 to close 1 to point... Its all situational darts. The biggest thing is you need to know when to just close and move on and when you may need to score points. I loved the explanation you gave on not chasing. It made perfect sense to me, and I have never known a way to explain this.

@@jeffreymeiman7114 2 and one is the way I've always played especially against point mongers lol. Every situation is different as is your opponent. I've learned not to chase,but have a couple of questions, for anyone really.... 1) if opponent starts on 20 and only hits 2 singles, should I then start on 20 too? and 2) if you hit T20 first dart, shouldn't you stay there and try to fill it up for points, rather than trying to close 19 and 18, and not having any points? Great video, thank you!

Sometimes when the opponent opens up with 2 20's I will go 19's to follow. If someone throws at 20's it can be risky. Especially for the average dart player. Let's be honest here, an average player is only going to average somewhere around 2MPR. So if they chase and only hit 2 20's then they can get in trouble quick and find themselves behind.

depends on how I'm 'shooting' that day. I almost always go for points with at least one dart per round. In a perfect round I'd go for T20 T20 T18 in that situation. Moving from 20's to 18's is natural. If not perfect, I'd at least close 20's so my opponent would not be able to run up points without another triple. If I think my opponent is having trouble on the 20's, I may go directly for T19 T19 T17 - again natural move from 19 to 17. Players generally shoot some numbers more consistently than others on any given day. Those 'off' numbers are the ones I try to get them stuck on having to score. No strategy always works with every opponent, so there's no reason to over think it. In 501 you play the board to zero. In cricket you play both board and opponent's weakness at the moment (which can and does change over the course of a match).

@@dacritter8397 Wow so interesting mate, I have a lot to learn haha
@WorldwideDarts2 жыл бұрын
@@dacritter8397 Okay, a couple things... I've noticed that when people talk/debate cricket they do so when mentioning all sorts of triples. Look at what you did here. You mentioned two 9 mark rounds. An average player might average 2 marks per round. The best American players average 4 marks per round. I just find it odd that in most debates I see nothing but triples mentioned. Lot's of 9, 7 and 5 marks being thrown in debate but in a real game it's totally different. Also, it's impossible to know what an opponent is going to throw next. None of us can predict that or see into the future. So guessing what they may or may not shoot at is not a strategy. It's not even realistic in a real match but I always see American players talking about the opponents weaknesses. Baffling. Let's admit, other than not chasing there really isn't any strategy at all in cricket. It's mind numbingly easy to play. And that's not a knock on the game, I do enjoy it. But when I see people talking about all this "strategy" I have a laugh to be honest. A player that is averaging 3mpr can do absolutely nothing about a player averaging 4mpr. They're just going to lose. There is no magic strategy they can pull out of the hat to make them win. The only real strategy is to shoot better than the opponent. Cricket is a GREAT game to talk about because of a few different scenarios that can happen. Do I close or do I point. Endless discussion of what ifs. But if you watch every single cricket match on KZbin it's 100% predictable at how the match unfolds.

That sounds good in theory but in a real game scenario it's much different. Let's say the opponent opens up with 4 20's. You have no choice but to go 19's and then the game goes back and forth until someone misses. It's as simple as that. Also, the 20's don't hold some mythical magical powers that allows players to score on them at will. A 2mpr player will hit them at a 2mpr rate. It's not like they'll be able to perform like Phil Taylor on the 20's but struggle on the rest of the board. Darts doesn't work like that at all.

great video and great point. Would you entertain the counter argument in the example of closed on 20? Would you be OK with don't chase if they scored on 20? While is true the a trip 20 on the last dart is a bummer but I think that is a rare and bad example. It could be equally countered with you hitting trip 20 on the first throw and now you have 2 darts in hand. I would modify "don't chase if you are behind" but the spirit of what you are saying is 100% correct. Thanks for putting it out there On a separate topic, you mentioned that cricket is not popular in Europe. Another huge mistake is not pointing (or not pointing enough) before attempting a close of another player’s number. For instance, if you’re playing someone who’s a 3.0 mpr, you should be at least 3 marks ahead of them in points before trying to close. So if they have 20’s, I want to have at least 61 points before I attempt to close (probably more, depending on what my mpr is and how many darts I have left in my turn). If you watch the top soft tip guys, they get way ahead before going for another number or close because they are dealing with players who have a near 6.0 mpr. Also, is that hat thing just a troll? Lol
@WorldwideDarts2 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing though... If you're playing someone shooting a 3mpr average then the only possible way to stay ahead of them is to throw better. You can't be 3 marks ahead if you're shooting a 2.2mpr average. I honestly think cricket makes for good debate because of the 'what if" scenarios but in real life it's impossible to rack up points or do anything against a player that is simply playing better than you. The opposite also rings true. Imagine me playing a 2mpr player. It wouldn't matter if I opened up on bulls or 15's. I'm still going to win because I'll be playing better than a 2mpr average. It's really a simple game without much strategy in real life.
@ryanw55692 жыл бұрын
@@WorldwideDarts Well, in short format tournaments (where you play best of 3, which is the majority of steel and soft tip tournaments, at least in the very early rounds), a 2.0 mpr person can always shoot a 4 or better in just one or two games (and you can shoot worse than your 3.0 mpr). Most of the soft tip tournaments are based on rating, so you're almost always playing someone who is rated near what you are. If you watch any good soft tip or steel tip player (Baggish, Gates, Lauby, Jeff Smith), they all point and point a lot. You will never lose with points!

@@ryanw5569 100% agree. Pointing is always a good thing for sure. I keep an eye out on the Dart Connect stats from American tourney's and the stats are all over the place. Names I've never heard of throwing a 4mpr in a best of 3 (2 legs) and taking out a big name but then in the next round they average 2.3mpr and get crushed. With short formats everything is so totally random. An average player can get hot and do some damage. Especially when they have to throw at the bullseye every leg to see who goes first. Imagine a player getting hot and averaging 4+mpr with the start. Almost impossible to overcome that unless you're throwing lights out.

I have another comment about showing new players the game of Cricket. I work with several guys from the UK and of course their game of choice is always 501. One night out a while back I told them the rules of Cricket and how to play by never chasing. Well the guy I was playing opened up with a 7 mark on the 20’s. A very strong opening. I went to the 19’s and only hit 2. Even though he was way up in points he continued to pound the 20’s. I kept on the 19’s and got 2 marks only. Again he was way ahead in points and just kept pounding the triple 20. Now this is well within the rules however most Americans get highly offended by this action and we refer to them as point mongers. I could never catch him because I became intimidated. After the match I told him that common etiquette is to move on after a decent point lead. Since he was a 501 player he was very familiar with pounding the 20’s. On soft tip machines (at least the Arachnid Boards) the game of Cricket is actually called Cricket 200. This means that your opponent can only ever have 200 points more than you or his extra points go to waste. This was all done by Arachnid to eliminate point mongering and keep the game moving.

I believe thers a slight caviat in the chase theory. For me theres a time or two Ill chase for a round but heres my reasoning. Knowing my opponent and how they throw and their general strategy is a huge plus here. For example I had a guy in league that EVERYONE referred to as agent 19 lol. He could absolutely and consistently destroy you on that triple. So I had closed the 20s no points and of course he hits a 7 count on the 19s as he would almost everytime. Now he wasnt near as accurate or consistent on his 16s 15s or 18s so I would often throw 3 in the fat piece of the 19 pie and close him off knowing I could rally strong especially on my 16s and 18s as I'm rather proficient on those numbers and much more so than he. This particular strategy against him specifically would win me 7 to 8 out of 10 legs against him but when I didn't employ this strategy against him he would generally bury me in points to the point I was in such a hole I couldn't catch him. Again my point is knowing your opponentand their style and habits can give you a huge edge and change your normal strategy. That's the ONLY time I've chased and it actually worked! That's why I love the game of cricket so much. Thanks for your videos and for the tips and expertise you provide.

Thank you for the comment but I have to say that I definitely disagree with most of what you said here. I'm simply not buying that someone can be a superhero on one number but not so great at other numbers. Darts doesn't work like that. It's also impossible to predict how well an opponent may or may not throw. At the end of the day it all comes down to how many marks per round on average someone can throw. If I have a leg of cricket where I throw 4.2mpr then there is absolutely no way I can lose to someone throwing 3mpr. It doesn't matter what I throw at or what order I hit the 7 cricket segments. The best players in the USA average about 4 marks per round in cricket so there's simply no way this guy is blasting 7 marks on the 19's with any sort of consistency yet unable to hit other segments. I'm sorry but I'm not buying that story at all. In the real world cricket is just about 100% predictable and there's not much thinking involved at all. Don't get me wrong, it's a super fun game but it's the most simple dart game there is. Here's something I wrote 6 years ago that might be worth a read... old.reddit.com/r/DartsTalk/comments/5u43sv/my_anti_cricket_thread/

Cap for humor, ok. This “shooting” lingo is something I never encountered.

Everybody is good at T20's, the most practiced target on the board. In my experience, it's much harder to win if you leave 20's open than if you spend a round closing them, so the advice in the video is backwards. Try it both ways for a while against quality opponents (i.e., ones that are smart enough to bury you in tons of points on the 20's) and see for yourself. I'm ecstatic when my opponent leaves 20's open, because they're so, so easy to point on, and I know it's hard for them to outscore me using a smaller, less practiced number. So better advice is to close 20's and restart the game on 19's. Maybe you happen to trip the 20 on the first or second dart and get a head start on the rest of the game. That said, 20 is the only number I'd chase with equal points (well, perhaps also the 19's if I know my opponent is good on them).

A lot of myths in what you posted here. 20's aren't some magical number that everyone can hit at will. Look at it this way... it's not like someone is going to be able to hit 5mpr on the 20's but then struggle on other segments. Darts doesn't work like that at all. Chasing on 20's is a horrendous idea for the points stated in this video. You might be able to get away with it in your local league but against the better players you're going to get absolutely smoked playing that way. That's why you NEVER see better players chasing.

Fantastic video! I catch myself chasing sometimes. I would love to find the article entitled “Thermonuclear Cricket”. I think it was by Tony Payne back in the 80’s. That was a method I used during that time to demolish opponents. It would get to them mentally. If anyone reading has a copy or knows where to find it on the web, let me know, please! Thank you for this reminder NOT TO CHASE.

was a bloody mary, no? Well cricket, an easy game tocplay with friends at the local pub. there are two options: regular and cutthroat ( where the others receive your pointd until they close). we played cutthroat all the time and the looser would have to make a round 🤪 Beside that, I would like to know more about the "thinking" or mental approach to darts.... what should I think when aiming for a certain spot of the board. I know, this sounds weired but may be you let us know your "thinking" ✌️😎🎯👍

Cran-Apple!? Cricket was the first game I learned, it’s still fun, but I enjoy playing with the entire board these days. I learned “triple”, but when hanging around some bars the good players called it treble so I quickly adjusted my vocabulary. I still call bull/double bull though, all the other numbers have a big numeric label, the bull is just two circles.

So basically there is no strategy to Cricket after all? That makes it even with darts how we know it overseas here ;)
@WorldwideDarts2 жыл бұрын
There is some strategy but it's very basic. I just find it cringe when people say they like cricket better because it has so much strategy. Or when they say cricket is like playing chess. There's nothing wrong with cricket, I like it myself but those saying are complete garbage.
