about a week ago I was hitting chest at the gym. I just got off work and it was a 9 hour shift where I ended up getting fired at the end because I refused to move to full time because I cared more about school than a job at Tim Hortons. I wasn't feeling my best and I've been progressing to 315x1 for a while now. I usually only need a spot on the 315, and I can bang out a 275 on my own. But due to the shit mood I was in I was struggling on the lift and some random person came over and lifted the weight for me. I was kinda upset in the moment because I wasn't done pushing at all, I think I could have gotten it on my own, but the fact that he took time out of his own workout to come help a kid who was clearly visually upset and struggling meant a lot to me. I thanked him for his help and just went down in weight because I didn't really want to be around anyone at the time, but his act of kindness really uplifted my shitty day.

I first started lifting in a little gym in Rolla, Missouri. Typical bro stuff with my roommate. At some point a large older gentleman came over to say hello to me and ask if there was a reason I was only doing partial bench presses. (the reason was I was just some dumb kid who didn't know how to bench and was going way too heavy). He took time out of his day to show me a few things and got me started on a training journey that is still going strong almost thirty years later. Later that year he went heavy and all of us college kids were stunned to see that nice old man bench 425 for doubles like it was made of styrofoam. Whole gym stopped to watch when he went heavy. We found out he was a prominent powerlifter in Missouri, Don Simpson. He passed away years ago, but his kindness and consideration and willingness to share knowledge in a little gym in a college town turned countless college kids on to powerlifting as a sport.

Someone else has probably commented this before, but with the squating w/ shoes vs. w/o shoes you gotta remember to use the shoe for the sport. Running / casual shoes with cushion absorbs force. You don't want any (force) absorption (in lifting) - to exaggerate squating in running shoes would be like trying to squat on a mattress vs. on cement. This is a personal anecdote - to the people suggesting weightlifting shoes be careful. The arch in the shoe makes getting depth easier for if you have poor ankle flexibility. You will have to focus on making sure to not tip forward with those shoes, because if you do you're going to hurt your back. Your depth looks good w/o shoes. If you decide to invest in shoes I would suggest looking into deadlift slipper or converse over weightlifting shoes since you don't appear to have any issues with depth.

After my gym reopened 4 weeks ago, there were a few different people that rushed up to offer a spot on several occasions. I'm not sure if i've seen them before but they were concerned that I was putting on alot of weight in their minds and they didn't notice the crash bars i had setup as well. There are no dedicated bench press stations at the small gym. Just 2 squat racks. While i didn't need a spot at the time, I welcome and appreciate the offers when I am gassed out or striving for a new PR. I've seen many younger less experienced guys that let their egos get the best of them while attempting weights they can't handle yet.

looking forward to seeing your squat improvements! next time try a set with more neutral neck/spine positioning if looking "up" was uncomfortable. In a high-bar position I typically look 6-8' in front of me and for low-bar positioning it is more like 5-6' to maintain the center foot weight distribution, this keeps your upper back in a more comfortable position and you won't feel so bound up on descent.

If u squeeze your flutes together before each rep it rotates your hips and knees outwards automatically, it’s something I find helps and definitely more suitable the pointing your head upwards. If u really want help mark riptoe is notorious for form in all 3 lifts and he’s got multiple videos on squat form which have helped me in the past :)

For your squats take the least amount of steps you can take. less energy waisted for a higher rep or high weight. I personally take 2 steps one long right foot step and then balance out with my left! Nice work brothaaa!

Hey dude Impressive bench presses, big fan. On your squat you should try to guide with your hips and not worry as much about keeping your back entirely straight. I recommend trying pin squats with low weight. They help a ton in correcting your technique and really develop power when your in the hole (At the bottom). Cheers!

It's good seeing you do squats now, I didn't know how to do it perfectly and never really got into it. But I'm trying to add it into my routine. Something that did bother me was the fact that it hurts when I place it on my shoulders/back . I need tips on where to properly place the bar when squatting. It would be great if you could share in the next video.

Pain as in just the bar being heavy right? I feel that too and use a little bit of my arm strength to offset it. Prob shouldn’t be doing this...

@@UFpwrLifter that's what I'm thinking and doing too but I pretty sure the more we do squats the stronger that part of the back becomes, so maybe just needs time but I also thinking about putting a pad around the bar so it has some cushion. But yea man keep it up

I was doing incline pretty easily with not a ton of weight but somewhat in between in terms of load. Some guy ran over like it was an emergency and helped me finish a rep I was totally ok with lol kind of random experience but I appreciate people at the gym looking out for one another. It’s a much more positive environment than most believe.

There is a guy at my gym who is 60 something, 130 pounds, and benches 3 plates. I talked to my dad about him and he told me when he was my age (over 30 years ago) the guy was still benching 3 plates! Absolutely mental to think someone could maintain their strength for that long.

That’s amazing, thanks for sharing! I would love to be there at that age!

"Didn't think you'd get 315." Plot twist, dude can get over 400 when he's serious about lifting.
