Holy shit. Seeing the route Sewa had to take to win his championship blows my mind. Pudwill to P-Rod to Berger to Asta to Shane O’Neill. Literally no one was going to beat him that year.

Ok this was actually entertaining. Morgan Smith went crazy that year, I remember thinking he would win every new BATB after that one

TY! Wish Morgan Smith was still competing. Seems like a cool dude.

Very good character analysis on Morgan. I saw him at a skatepark outside Toronto, skating by himself and I asked him to play a game of skate. He was down and mopped the floor with me in a very respectful way and the guy was super chill.
@drumtone2 жыл бұрын
spot on with the morgan comment at the end. ive skated with him a handful of times in toronto and hes the most down-to-earth humble pro skater ive ever met. he would definitely throw down on some skate with anyone.

I've met Morgan Smith (well barely), we live in the same city so I've seen him skating around quite a bit. I met him at an empty pond that people skate in...gave everyone props when he left - seems like a nice guy.

Alex Mizurov is an interesting case. He did so well, and he had some other high-profile games of skate, but you rarely hear from him, and he hasn’t been back to BATB.
@Bb186fo3 жыл бұрын
Something to do with some miscommunications with the berrics employees and a situation leading to him feeling slighted by Steve Berra, to which I believe he had some words for him and hasn't been invited back. There's an interview about it I believe. Im not 100% but it seemed to possibly in part effect his career in general seeing as how I haven't seen anything of him since, not in any of the bigger American companies anyways. The skate industry can be very stupidly political sometimes. I know people get blackballed though, it's what happened to Danny Gonzales and I'm sure some others.
@bett4313 жыл бұрын
Apparently Morgan had to come in on a different day and refilm one important trick of their Battle, and when Alex asked why that was done, he didnt get an explanation. Then there was an argument with Berra and from that point on Alex started to go seperate ways with most of his american sponsors and stopped his efforts to move to america.
@Bb186fo3 жыл бұрын
@@bett431 yeah that's right, guess he thought maybe they'd cheated him and edited it to look differently. A little explanation would have went a long way. I think I read also, before the game even started, Alex was waiting for Morgan for a really long time and had a flight or something and they apparently told him they wouldn't reschedule but he'd be disqualified if he left. So I guess the fact that they made time for Morgan but were strict with him already left a bad taste in his mouth. It's been awhile since I read the story so I could misremember but pretty sure that's the gist of it.

Pretty cool, was a great watch! Just had a thought that also something like Trick difficulty could be considered (although its hard to objectively measure). Which isnt necessarily needed for consistency but would be interesting, because for those guys base Tricks like shuvits and kickflips are fairly easy but a fakie late shuv it some iffy stuff to Land f. E. Anyway, just a thought, great content!

Itd be interesting to see the consistency weighted for trick difficulty. Luan is a beast but does tend to do every trick before advancing to harder ones. Maybe assign weights to each trick by counting how often skaters miss them and taking the inverse. Then consistency will be weighted by makes*trick difficulty. This could help skaters that dive into harder tricks first without doing the easy stuff first. I suspect someone like sewa would emerge on top since he likes to play unusual tricks to get his wins that only he does well like the FS hardflip and the 540 shove its and etc. itd be interesting to find out!

A better measure of consistency would be for every skater to be tested multiple days at different times of the year, each time to have to perform something like 30 randomly computer selected tricks out of every possible trick variation of up to 360 degrees rotation of every type in every stance, and then a final 30 pre-determined list of tricks.

TJ Rogers talks about him and what he's doing nowadays in his 9 club podcast interview but to sum it up he stepped down from being pro a few years ago as he didn't like the pressure of being pro and often having to go to LA or other cities to film, compete in contests, etc and would rather skate in the comfort of Toronto. My friend and I still see him at the skate shop and skate parks. He's still good as ever at the park doing tricks that no one else can do. He was one of my favourite skaters growing up and still is.

Wait your point about Morgan Smith being the second person to win in their debut year isn't true because of Chris Cole. He won the second tournament and wasn't in the first.

While these numbers are certainly indicative of some level of consistency, they very much depend on how they and their opponent decided to play the game. Skaters, and their opponent, who like to go through every single easy trick they have before trying the hard ones are going to have much higher consistency levels than someone who almost immediately starts trying the hard tricks. Even if someone really is far more consistent than some other skater, the numbers from any one of these games could very easily show the exact opposite all depending on what tricks they and their opponent select. With more and more games analyzed the likelihood of significance of this factor diminishes, but still very real, and these numbers should not be taken to mean an objective measure of each skaters "consistency", whatever that actually is depending how you define it
