They unrealistically want Barbie to be all things to all people and whenever Mattel tries they get criticised. Why is it Barbie’s responsibility to represent every single person on the planet? So unreasonable. And I don’t know anyone who thought as a child they had to look like Barbie. We all just thought she was pretty and fun to play with.

My little sister got her from my step grandmother one of the few times she allowed us to get anything. My sister was happy with the doll and I didn't see anything wrong with her. I was like 10 or so, I just assumed she (the doll) was an adult, it was clear on the packaging that she was to me. But my step grandmother made a comment that of course my sister would want a doll like that. Insinuating that she would be a teen pregnancy, which she always made sly comments like that. I promise that more so than not, kids will play with anything, they learn of these negative notions through the adults that more often than not, buy them the toys they don't like. It wasn't long after that comment that she hated the doll. To her, it represented how my step grandmother saw her, instead of a teaching moment about pregnancy and how it works or whatever. That isn't without it's criticism of the always in heels and being normal barbie skinny after. But again, it's a doll.

This video made me facepalm to the end. I get that people want "accurate" representation but it's a toy for goodness sakes! Some controversies really deserve a raised eyebrow but some are total BS. Imagine people wanting an accurate plus size body but when Mattel delivered, people still complain. And what part of the down syndrome barbie made fun of the people with down syndrome?? I feel like the people complaining are not even the target consumers.

They usually aren’t!! People like to get their panties in a twist over something that concerns them in no way. Meanwhile, they are trying to remove an item from the shelves that is actually HELPING the REAL Down syndrome kids. It’s so ridiculous. And I’d really like to see them try to design a plus size Barbie and then mass produce it. Curvier bodies can be harder to replicate on a static plastic doll. And, it takes more material to produce. I would be the FIRST to buy a “heavier-set” Barbie but I have yet to see one made in an elegant and inexpensive way.

My mom had Tammy and Pepper dolls from Ideal, her neighbor had Barbie and Skipper. Me and my sister eventually filled up an entire suitcase with a variety of Barbie dolls: Barbie with various jobs and interests (dentist, camping, grocery shopping), Skipper (she had bendable knee and elbow joints), Stacie (with her bike and plastic puppy), and a few varieties of baby sister Kelly (I specifically remember "potty training Kelly"). Of course, we also had a bunch of Ken dolls; i specifically remember the one with soft hair and the 5 o'clock shadow you could easily "shave off" with water and a teently tiny plastic razor

I disagree with almost all of this. I get the backlash for some, but dolls like the Black Canary barbie were marketed as collector dolls, and that's not just because of the price. Barbie is one of the most diverse doll brands out there, and there are honestly more controversial dolls out there other then barbie (and you missed some key controversial kens, anyway).

WRONG WRONG WRONG Hi I know a lot about doll history & fashion history and this video spreads a lot of misinformation! -Lili is not a "call girl" she's a secretary, this is a common misconception because of some translations from German to English. Lili was popular because she was a independent career woman who loved dressing beautifully and dating, the humor of her comic strip came from her work setting and personal life. Her doll was an adult collectible, but she wasn't just for men and she was sold as a novelty gift in regular stores. -Most of the dolls of the world are great representations of their cultures, in general it's a beautiful line of dolls that look amazing in and out of their boxes. Some of them are... regrettable, but most are not. -That Black Canary doll is a collectors doll for adults, she is not a playline doll and that was reflected in her price and clothing that would be frustrating for a young child with limited manual dexterity. If you want an outrageous S&M looking DC doll, look at the Halle Berry Catwoman. She was priced like a playline doll but more popular among adult collectors. I actually had her as a kid and she was one of my favorites because of her alternative fashion. She even came with Catwoman's whip too 😂 I'll add another common misconception fun fact here too because I see this a lot and the new movie leans into it for some reason: Earring magic Ken was not controversial and he had a normal release with the rest of the Earring Magic Barbies. His necklace was just a place for the Earrings to be displayed and the designers did not visit a queer nightclub for inspiration. DarlingDollz has a great video on these common misconceptions, I highly recommend it if you want to know the truth about Mattel's history with Barbie!
@professorbutters
@professorbutters 10 ай бұрын
Earring Magic Ken became controversial because of the necklace and his clothing. It wasn’t meant to be controversial. He sold really well before he was pulled. I kind of enjoyed the cameos of the recalled Barbies and Kens (and of course, Midge and Skipper). I’ll have to check out that video!
@Livk57
@Livk57 10 ай бұрын
@professorbutters he was definitely commented on by some news outlets, but it wasn't that big a deal because he sold really well and was not pulled from shelves, he sold out fast and you can see that reflected in the secondhand market. There is no shortage of earring magic Ken. You might have to wait months-years before you find a regular playline Barbie you want in good condition, but you can buy 20 never unboxed Earring Magic Kens right now if you have the money. Mattel employees have stated that they were aware of the resemblance to queer fashion while he was in production, and they didn't mind at all because their job was to sell Barbies and queer adults sometimes spend a lot of money on Barbies. I have no idea why they imply he was discontinued due to controversy in the movie, but if you ask people who worked at Mattel at the time they will tell you that he was discontinued at the same time as the earring magic Barbies in the same way all playline dolls are eventually discontinued as new ones are released. None of that is a secret, it's just not a very interesting story to repeat for clicks.

Before Bratz came out, Barbie was literally the highlight of my childhood. As a kid, I liked these doll because they were beautiful and they had amazy pink cars and cool dream houses. The only Barbie doll I don't like is the one that came with the book that said don't eat inside. That Barbie shouldn't have been released but I don't see the problem in any of the others... And if you're concerned with your child playing with Barbie's tiny accessories, get them a different Barbie doll. Also, I don't understand why a pregnant doll was such a controversy. Kids may not be aware of sex but they're not blind. They see pregnant women everywhere in the real world. Doesn't make sense to me at all.

No matter what who do there will always be people who will remain unsatisfied and unhappy. The most beautiful thing about Barbie is that she is so unique in herself and yet so inclusive of everything and everyone. Growing up I don't remember learning anything bad but only good from Barbie, especially the fact that anything is possible and you can be anything is you dream and work for is. She gives idea of the limitless possibilities and opportunities. I think her contribution in people's childhood is much positive (directly or indirectly). No child would compare herself to Barbie (at least not me) rather a friend. I have a lot of different kinds of barbies with different names personalities, backgrounds. Its something way beyond the adults can imagine because they have boundaries and differences. They are always concluding stuff. Kids don't think that way. They just play with their imagination without differences.

As a woman who recently earned a Bachelor's degree in math I am proud to say that the male/female breakdown of those majoring in math at my university was pretty much 50/50 and the women wanted to use their degrees for a variety of reasons, not just to be teachers. Wanting to be a teacher was the reason most women majored in STEM the first time I went to college in the 90s. I was the weirdo majoring in biology/chemistry to go into research. I ended up working in quality control in several pharmaceutical labs and it was dominated by males. I was often the only woman working in the lab. I'm so glad things have become more equal in recent years. Part of that we do owe to Barbie. She let little girls know it was admirable to imagine themselves in any career they wanted and were not just limited to being a stay at home mom.

what bothers me is adults judging toys from their adult perspective. as a child, i loved my "growing up skipper", and i feel like she helped me understand the changes my body was going thru. an adult can't understand that, unless they can remember adolescence, and who wants to do that? and for those that complain that specific barbies don't "accurately portray" their subjects, well, they're dolls. and what, exactly, do you expect "dolls of the world" to look like, if not stereotypes? please remember that stereotypes are based in fact, even if they don't apply to every member of a group or country.

The main take away I get from this, is that Barbie will never win. She’s too thin, or too fat, or progressive or not progressive enough, she’s inclusive and also disrespectful, she’s honoring a culture or she’s capitalizing off of it, and her Down syndrome barbie got it right but it’s not good enough. There have been obvious misfires for the brand as this video points out, but a lot of controversy ignores the very positive things she’s done too

Whatever barbie is made to represent a group of people there will still be people in that group who look slightly different they're at least trying to be inclusive you can't make a doll to look like everyone at once

No one will ever be happy with every Barbie. It’s just like twitter in a lot of ways where a lot of people think every tweet must apply to their lives experiences.

They forgot about Tattoo Barbie. The owners of these dolls could add tattoos to the surface of the doll. Only difference is, those tattoos would wash off. I think the dolls also came with temporary tattoos for the kid.

My sister and I one Christmas from our aunt and uncle❤❤!! My sister had gotten Barbie and I got Ken!!❤❤WE LOVED our Barbies😊😊😊! My mom had six daughters and we all had alot of Barbies!!!!!! I really wanted G .I. Joe😢. However KEN was COOL!!!I used to dress Ken in barbie dresses😮❤. My three brothers had G. I. Joe's... I ask my middle brother if I could put the military clothes on my Ken doll and to my surprise he let me😊!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. When I was older I started collecting Barbie dolls. I had bought them for my granddaughters and myself including my niece's. I had bought six hundred and fifty, and gave alot of them away. I love Barbie she was alot of FUN.🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹.

I had a hundred Barbie's as child and my Aunt would buy me the Holiday Barbie to collect. I still get a Holiday Barbie every year from my husband now. Sometimes my Aunt would buy me 2, 1 to collect and 1 to play with.

The dolls are for kids. But adult parents are mostly complaining. Guess they’re scared that their kids would look up at the doll instead of them. 😅

Barbie is A TOY, real life does NOT need or have to be incorporated into Barbie. There's already dolls for that, which children get at school for certain classes, at certain times of their education. Baby born, another TOY, but is more anatomically correct. that toy has been controversial also. G.I Joe, for boys, then we got G.I Jane for girls, and there was Army Barbie. a whole FIASCO due to some thinking, that only Barbie is for girls, girls don't want to be in the army. but, many are, and have been. can children just have a toy to have fun, use their imagination, life (Barbie's) is their creation? Lego is less controversial. EVERYTHING IS AWESOME as EVERYONE buys and plays with that. There hasn't been Goth Barbie, oh but that would be too frightening and all other bable bulls**t. the Goth Bratz doll was changed, now the original is worth a FORTUNE. also, there's CULTURED (people, countries who invented many foods, fashion, music, film, that we love) yet that's STEROTYPICAL. there's a difference, same with Phobia and Tolerance. but, people get lost in that, and get all up in arms over a TOY.

"Dolls Of The World" Was Not Offensive To Me Because The Dolls Were Dressed In Traditional Clothing That Belong To Each Individual Region & "That" Is Not A Stereotype. People Sometimes Takes Things To Far & Like To Eat Alot Of $h!t. People Get Offended For Tha Sake Of Being Offended.

ohmigod the black canary barbie was OBVIOUSLY made for adults, there is no arguing. it was a collectors doll. she was part of a line of dc characters who got dolls and they were MADE. FOR. COLLECTORS. and lol people can collect dolls and like comics. there are way more controversial barbies you could have put on this list.

The Frida Kahlo Barbie also really pissed me off. I’m an artist myself and Kahlo was someone who, as an artist, I always looked up to. I was actually gonna give a presentation about her in my college Public Speaking class and while I was in the process of working on it, her Barbie was announced. Just by looking at it I saw so many things wrong with it and I had no problem fitting it into my presentation. I’m glad a lot of other people voiced their opinions on the doll
