I got the growing up Skipper doll for Christmas. It was the adults that passed it around and laughed at it the most. Also the last Barbie I ever got, as I was soon deemed "too old" to play with Barbies. I had to give my collection, my case that turned into a house, and of course, all the clothes to my cousins. The younger sister of Barbie was Kelly, who was adorable, I had one, but with all the recent Barbie hype, I haven’t heard anyone talk about her, she wasn’t even mentioned in the movie. OMG! That tiny slip is adorable & definitely a must have for girls back in the day. I was an 80's girl, so every time I'd wear a full circle skirt, I'd have a slip underneath to fill it out (make it poofy). It was definitely a necessity for turning a look. I still have a similar pair of Barbie panties that survived my childhood.
@AnzuMiruku
@AnzuMiruku 11 ай бұрын
Exactly! It’s not weird at all. The “under pretties” weren’t intended to be worn on Skipper by itself. Slips were a closet staple then. I remember my mom owned a slip in every length and color in the 80s and 90s. Skipper is meant to wear it under her dresses to make them poofier, and prettier if the lace trim peeks below the hem. 🤍
@nilawarriorprincess
@nilawarriorprincess 11 ай бұрын
@AnzuMiruku Yes! In those days, the Barbie brand was about accurate details & I don't think it was 'proper' for ladies to leave home without slips. Under garments were a BIG deal in the previous century.

Malibu Skipper: Sunscreen / Where are the parents? Growing up in the 80's and 90's, well past the 70's, I don't think I remember sunscreen being used much at all. It was always that coconut scented tanning oil. Then you'd get yourself coated in aloe gel. For Gen-X and Xennials, the parents were often nowhere to be found. Safety be damned. You know, "Bye mom, I'm going with 5 girls I've never met before to play Barbies behind some random abandoned steel mill." And your mom just reply "Okay dear, come home before the street lights come on".

As an aside, sunscreens existed in various parts of the world long before 1971, but if you had asked the average American citizen in 1971 if he/she used sunscreen, the response would have been something like, "Do you mean suntan lotion?" Malibu Skipper's parents probably would have thought she just looked healthy with that deep tan. It took a while longer for us to wise up.

She actually started with the baby sitting Skipper (brunette with purple streaks and 2 babies) followed by Barbie with puppies, and then Stacie & Chelsea with camping gear. I think the idea of Barbie is that she can be anything. She's not supposed to be canonically married but it's important for girls to understand that there's nothing wrong with being married/domestic if that's what they WANT to do. I had many skipper dolls growing up in the 80s, I loved them ^^ my favourite was Dream Date Skipper, because she had short brown hair just like me, and such a beautiful outfit

Hi small theory on why the grow up skipper doll had a longer skirt for her as a teen. It could be a reference to how in the past little girls would wear just above the ankle length dresses until they were considered grown up which is when she would change to wear dresses that covered her ankles.

im normally not super into vintage barbie dolls but all the skipper dolls are sooo cute i might try to buy some... i like the idea that skipper is very fickle with friends and is always meeting new people to canonise why she has so many friends and boyfriends

This was fascinating, I had no idea Skipper morphed so many times. I had a 1965 Skipper, Ricky, Tutti, Todd, and Barbie (until my mum gave it all to the thrift store). I appreciate all the info and snippets, thank you for the time to present this.

As a lil girl I had the Sun Lovin Barbie, PJ and Skipper. Down the street from me there were three sisters Kathy 18, Chrissy 16, and their little sister Karen who was 12. I played with little sister Karen quite often as I didn’t have any sisters. I often admired the trio of sisters especially the older ones with their teen adventures and escapades. So, Barbie, PJ and Skipper quickly because Kathy, Chrissy and Karen. 😂

My wife and I finally got around to watching Barbie last night. Growing up in the 1960s/70s, Barbie was a big thing for her. (She still has a Scarlett O'Hara Barbie...sadly, the green gown is very faded on one side.). When they mentioned Skipper in the movie, she absolutely burst out laughing and talked about Growing Up Skipper. I had to investigate and that's how I found this video!

I love Skipper , and I think the late 80s to early 90s produced the CUTEST Skipper dolls. Her big sparkly eyes and poofy hair was everything. 🥹💖 I think my favorite Skipper face mold is the Sun Sensation Skipper doll from 1991. She reminds me of Licca Chan. I also own Teen Time Courtney and she is too adorable especially in her white and red polka dot nightgown! ❤

Late 80’s early 90’s Skipper anime eyes was my absolute fav of all the Barbie dolls, for nostalgia sake. My fav doll was Cool Tops Skipper, but I really wanted a Courtney doll. I just bought my 5 year old a used Teen sweetheart Skipper and a Cool Crimps Courtney, and we got some Skipper fashions.

1991 Babysitter Skipper was the only Skipper I ever owned. It took me ages to convince my Mom I absolutely needed her. She was one of my favorite dolls for a long long time! Loved her hair, outfit and all the baby accessories that came with her. I still have the accessories and Skipper. No idea what happened to the actual baby that came with her. Haven’t seen it in ages.
