Doug is a show that honestly, wasn't all too controversial or dark. Sure, it may have tackled some issues that it's audience may have faced in real life, however, the show did a great job of keeping in mind who that audience is... At it's heart, Doug is a kids show. With that, comes with the territory of wanting to teach valuable life lessons in a usually more light-hearted way. However, on today's nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're going to check out an episode of Doug that was very different from the rest. An episode so controversial that it ended up being censored... Connie is a therapist, Patty maybe a veterinarian (I originally said teacher then remembered the horse episode from the Nick series. Maybe she's a professor at a veterinary school?) Judy Funnie is a famous actress and drama teacher. Rodger, I could see as a respected kindergarten teacher. Just because he's mean as a kid doesn't mean he'll stay mean. They're only 12 in the original series and he's had a lot of time to grow up. He's mostly mean because he feels his father abandoned him and is jealous of the other kids who do have an active father in their lives. Doug married Patty and they adopted a little boy from a third world country and although he may not look like Doug, physically, he's defiantly his father's son.

This is true, but I'm not sure a cartoon is the ideal format for this especially when you cannot talk to actual children and let them air their current problems and issues they are dealing with. I think having an open discussion would go a long way for children but I am not sure if the education system will support that. It's a shame

@@walker1984 You're thinking of approaching an adult with the issue. You can't do that with children, they're on a whole other wavelength and can't comprehend the logical way adults think. You have to appeal to a more emotional and demonstrative method of teaching. Don't just sit them down and list off a bunch of bullet points from a doctor's pamphlet, *show them* what it's like, put them in the shoes of a character they like or relate with and have the character go through mistakes or falters to demonstrate what could or will happen, and then how to correct these mistakes.

This episode is just a female version of the Nickelodeon episode where Doug spent a weekend at his grandmas and came back slightly overweight from being over fed by his grandma (because that’s what grandma’s do. Feed their grand babies). And at the same time he was invited by Bebe for a swim party and Doug felt self conscious about his weight and had day dreams of being overweight all the time until he stumbled upon an ad to workout. He does his best to workout but he still feels self conscious about his body because he worked off the weight he gained from when he was at his grandmas. Also a lot of the other kids were self conscious about their own appearances as well on the day of the swim party.

Does anyone remember that this wasn't the first time Doug covered body-shaming? Like, in the old Nick show there was an episode where Doug gained weight at his grandma's and people ragged on him relentlessly, and he began over-dieting and exercising to get the weight off in a super short amount of time so he can go to a pool party. Then, lets not ignore the stark slimdown Connie got during the Nick-to-Disney transfer. I feel like Disney was trying to subconsciously sell us something toxic about body types here...and when they failed they made this episode.

I will say, as someone who has endured an eating disorder, what Patty goes through is exactly how it can downspiral fast. They even got the dizziness and slurring of her words down pretty right; I had gotten bad enough to a point where I couldn't form words correctly when I tried to speak. It was kind of scary. That said, there's no way to tackle this kind of topic without making it a proper special because the recovery process is such a bitch to get through. It's not easy, it's not a switch you turn on or off. The psychological component behind it basically takes over your mind and you have to learn how to regain control of yourself. There's also long-term damage you have to live with sometimes too, depending how bad it gets and if you relapse too, which is always a real possibility. It took a couple years for me to get to a point where I'm basically indifferent to past triggers. I can no longer run, unless I take a puff of an inhaler because I damaged my pulmonary system. I have some minor brain damage, primarily just memory is a mess and my math skills are no longer where they used to be. i luckily do not have any noticeable heart damage, but I would not be surprised if there was some. But I do believe in bringing awareness to the disorder because it is by far one of the deadliest mental illnesses out there. I think the best way to wrap up a topic like this for a kids show is to basically have the character going to see a psych team (psychiatrist, therapist, dietitian, etc.) to get help, and show that the character admits they still need to keep working on their problem cause it isn't easy, but that they're on the right healthy path again. It's okay to show that a problem isn't completely resolved at the end, but that there is still hope because the character is getting help to overcome it eventually.

It’s certainly possible, but I imagine that it was simply removed after the first time it ran, because Shawn said it was done in syndication. As sad as it is, something I’ve noticed as a parent is that other parents will often just shut down a lot of conversations because they find them too uncomfortable or they think their kids are too young. Something I told my oldest child when he started school was that if he in any way felt unsafe or there was something he needed to talk about to tell an adult. If the adult he talked to makes him feel unheard or even more unsafe then to come to me or dad.

As someone who struggled with an eating disorder, not eating and reminiscing on no longer eating like normal is HEAVILY romanticized so the whole “reminder for when you used to eat” just hurt real bad cause that’s how I did see it, I’d think I’d finally look good and people will comment how good I look and I’d think about how I used to eat compared to not anymore and actually feel good thankfully I’m in a much better place now, eating how I should and not feeling shame or guilt for occasionally snacking, got a dog and walking and playing with him every day keeps me active enough too!

Nickelodeon actually did have an episode of Doug where he goes to his grandma's house for the week and eats a lot. Soon after, he's invited to a pool party. We see it all the time, actually - girls get more attention for it because they're also expected to be attractive and thin; boys get a LOT more leeway; even if fat people in general are looked down on and mocked on a broader scale, the line for where "fat" starts is a LOT higher for boys than it is for girls. And that... kinda sucks, tbh. As a kid I got bullied _mercilessly_ for my weight, and now as an adult, people are like "no, you're really handsome, you should be more confident," and I get to explain to them that I mentally and physically CANNOT be confident because that was brutally crushed out of me at every possible opportunity by people calling me a fat, disgusting, unlovable pig. And having it suddenly turn around and be like "you're actually handsome now" just feels like you're being gaslit. Because you are, actually.

This episode really hits home for me nowadays. Throughout most of my life I was fat and was often bullied for it. I tried going to the gym, but just could not commit. It wasn't until 2019 when I started taking it seriously. I ate less and exercised three times a day, and less than a year later, I had lost over 120 pounds. But this is where I went wrong. Afterwards, I became so hyper fixated on what I was eating, so much so that I refused to eat any sort of meat, junk food, etc. I kept losing weight, sure, but I also looked terrible. Another year passed and I had lost another 80 pounds, being only 142. But what frightened my family was how I looked. I looked like a skeleton with skin draped over it. I got dizzy easily and just felt way too light. After talking with my cousin who had gone through his own weight loss journey, I learned just how badly I had messed up. I'm 6'4, and according to him, my ideal weight should be around 209 to 219, not 142. I looked at myself in the mirror and realized this, and after that I began eating better while slowing down my exercise to only once a day. I'm still trying to balance out my diet, but I feel a million times better now. Weight loss isn't easy. It'll exhaust you, it'll test your patience, and it'll strain your body, but it's very much worth losing the weight. However, don't overdo it, because you could wind up like me and feel drained and weak rather than strong and energized.

The irony of these weight loss fads, the models get surgery to help maintain that body. A good portion of them part does works out, but it’s due to working out since childhood. You are in control of your health, not what TV or internet says!

this is too true, it's how you grew up and how you maintained your body up until adulthood that somewhat "shapes" your body in the future. It's overly complicated, but overthinking the process is definetely not good to think about either. intuitive eating could be more suggested as it's not a diet, your more listening to your bodies hunger cues, and what you really need vs what you want in the moment.

As someone who struggled with eating disorder for years. It can be overwhelming at times. I used to wear a watch eat something. I would go out get ready and not have breakfast. Go to out almost point of fainting. My co saw how skinny I have gotten. To the point you see ribs. I have gotten better 5 years stronger.

The 90s and 2000s had a huge focus on encouraging kids to stay fit and healthy. I'm all for that and I really don't like that our society has practically turned obesity and eating disorders into a harmless lifestyle, but this episode could have done a better job of promoting a healthy message instead of saying "fat, bad."

I'm glad we learned from that and keep track of actual nutrition now. Also, those services weren't censored at the end, they have changed, so they were removed. The phone numbers are still around, but they connect you to different help centers. The AOL URL is dead and just goes to the AOL homepage.

It's so insanely important for people, especially young ones to have access to support for these kinds of things. I'm almost 30 and I've struggled with BDD and eating disorders for as long as I can remember. I've been in therapy for it for a while now and it's helped tremendously, but even now I still relapse sometimes. It breaks my heart knowing that there are so many people going through the same thing and having no form of support. Super video as always, thanks for what you do :)

Something that took me completely off guard is that it wasn't magazines or the media that caused me to develop an ED... it was my doctor telling me I had high cholesterol...! Because the only instruction I got from my doctor was "Exercise more and eat healthier." Literally, that's all I was told. I had no knowledge whatsoever about nutrition, so my first instinct immediately was to restrict my eating and exercise a bunch. I lost weight so fast, and now I am constantly asking myself "Can I eat this or have I reached my limit for saturated fat today?" I slipped into that mindset out of pure fear that "if I don't lose weight and get my cholesterol down, I'll have a heart attack and die." Eating disorders can be born from all kinds of things. All that idea has to do is lead you toward obsessing over the food that you eat. It makes you literally afraid to eat. What's so funny to me (in a macabre way) is that gold sandwich necklace that Patty won as a "reminder of the food she used to eat." I have literally been in the grocery store, passed an aisle with my favorite cereal or something like that, and just about cried because I've convinced myself that I'm no longer "allowed" to have it. It really does seem like the "golden food" that you wish you could win back someday. I've been trying to re-learn how to let myself eat what I want to eat without being terrified of raising my cholesterol... It's a long, ongoing process, mostly because I can't see the results right away. I have no idea what my cholesterol numbers are until I get my blood drawn. So I can only guess and hope I'm not screwing up. That kind of "unknown" factor is terrifying. It's a terrible mindset to sink into and SO difficult to climb back out. Fear is such a powerful motivator/inhibitor...!

I don't think that last part was CENSORED, per se; I get the impression that it was removed because of either a dead link due to changes in the way the internet worked, the initiatives listed going defunct, an expiration of licensing/advertising rights or a combination thereof. All in all, the culprit appears to me not to be parent outrage, but rather obsolescence.

I'm thinking that they may have removed the resources because they could be out of date (this is an episode that was first aired in 1997 after all. I don't know if more recent resources could be added retroactively but I think it would be good to do so since this is still a very relevant issue. The parent complaints or hesitancy to have the percieved uncomfortable convos with their kids could have been a factor as well. Who knows? Maybe there were a lot of calls from kids thinking they had the issue or just pranking. The PSA doesn't seem to encourage parental supervision when calling like others at the time. idk why I pinpointed the censor so much but there ya go. Great vid btw Shawn!

I've been disabled since early childhood so I've been fat my whole life because it's hard to exercise when all your joints hurt so I've been judged and overtly TORTURED for being fat, being disabled, and being a ginger. I was so targeted by my peers in middle school that the administration KICKED ME OUT and had me home schooled because, and I quote, "She's a distraction to the other students" because a dozen kids decided that dumping me out of my wheelchair and moving desks to make it so I couldn't get to my desk. Administration knew my mother was a mentally ill addict so they locked a disabled child in an apartment with an abusive parent and sent a teacher over once per month to collect my work. Orange Grove Middle School in Tucson was hell for me in the early 90's. I've been openly mocked by strangers as an adult and I've only been a shirt size XL and pant size 18 for 80% of my adult life so I'm still just slightly above American average. It's because of the combo of weight and needing crutches or a walker to get around. This country is so fucked up. Even in 2024 in the height of Woke horseshit it's still acceptable to ridicule and mock people that are ugly.

When I struggled with ED I kept saying I obviously didn't really have an ed because i wasn't skeletal looking. But I was like Patty. Tired, fainting, counting calories to the extreme. Weight should be spoken of in schools- but in a healthy manner. I struggled with my weight for years until, unfortunately I ended up having an absolutely horrible time with pancreatitis a few years back that actually shut down my digestive system for about a month. I physically had to stop eating for literally that whole month PLUS half of the next, strictly on a bland broth diet while my body recuperated. I dropped 60lbs in the first month and, although I felt fantastic after the fact- that was DEFINITELY not the way to do it. I know this is an entirely different side of the eating problem- but stuff like this really brings me to those worst months of my life because, literally as said by my doctor I had to do as he said or I would DIE. Even when I was finally given the go to, I was eating like Patty for a while. Nibbles of food the size of one baby carrot or peice of broccoli. I was constantly tired and miserable. Even though I had serious pros losing all that weight ((my dizzy spells turned out to be due to blood pressure because of my weight, heart palpations and back problems like sciatica and numbness in legs I had was now gone)) I do NOT EVER wish that on anyone- Seeing this it bothers me because they place it purely on visual appeal, which was and is still a big thing, rather than focus on actual health of an individual which would have also emphasized the balance of eating in a healthy manner. The lack of eating is not the answer- its intake and WHAT. The body does the rest. One of many things I wish school systems would actually look into for the well being of not just the overweight, but those given physical appearance issues.

This episode alone proves Disney's Doug is overlooked. Fans of the franchise are so hung over the Nickelodeon show they never gave it a chance. I love the original show too but growing up I still watched the second installment. All the changes made felt like a continuation of life in Bluffington, like grown up alongside Doug and everyone else.
