Before Nickelodeon had SpongeBob, they had Klasky Csupo: the animation studio behind Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, AHHH Real Monsters, Rocket Power and As Told By Ginger. They were the studio that built Nickelodeon and were a titan of thhe 1990s and early 2000s but nowadays, they are virtually gone. What happened to this once mighty studio? UPDATE: So I drove by there on 04/03/2024, and I saw activity in the parking lot. Maybe it isn't as abandoned as I thought. Or could be potential buyers/renters looking to check it out? I work in the film industry, and almost everyday I pass by what remains of Klaspy Csupo’s old studio on Highland Blvd in Hollywood (it’s a small grey two-story building). The logo is still on the front of the building, and the side walls are adorned with paintings of their characters (including the Rugrats), and yet its abandoned. The parking lot is starting to get overgrown, the paint is peeling. It’s an eerie sight to what was once the dominate studio that worked for Nickelodeon.

I used to be scared of that logo Till I watched it again years later down the line and looking back it’s not that scary it’s kinda creepy and weird but Its a cool logo that symbolizes what they are That’s, what splaat is It’s a symbol that they’re not ashamed of making ugly irreverent cool cartoons on the fly. Like duckman and aaahh real monsters. some underrated gems like immigrants. (Which is arguably the best cartoon that spike tv picked up but sadly bailed out on the last minute making immigrants end up just being a compilation movie.) and cool music videos like shadrach by the beastie boys Which again made sense why they chose klasky csupo to do their music video their story is similar to klasky csupo’s in making creative trippy messy stuff with the stuff they had lying around. I wish they continue doing weird irreverent crazy cartoons instead of just milking rugrats.

Angelica being mean was true to life though, as kids can be exceptionally cruel to others with and without realizing it. Especially when viewed from the eyes of a child because even the littlest things can be world crushing to a child, and experiencing these things helps them grow emotionally. So the fact they argued about that shows how little they truly know about kids despite being parents

From what I recall, Germaine wanted Angelica to be not only nasty, but more rounded than your average bully character and was interested in exploring how her spoiled rotten background made her the way she is and Csupo was largely on his side, while Klasky just saw her as an unrepentant villain and didn't understand why Csupo and Germaine would even want her on the show to begin with. Though I could be remembering wrong.

Piggybacking on this to say Angelica was pretty relatable to me as a kid. I didn't get much attention from my parents, especially my mother, while growing up, and also underwent horrific abuse at the hands of many people at a daycare when I was only a toddler. I even appreciated the depictions of Drew and Charlotte. They were definitely well-intentioned. You can really see this in particular in the Rugrats Go Wild movie, especially for Charlotte. But yeah, this is to say I can get why she was the way she was. For a time outside of daycare, I was a tyrant and massive bully. It was easy to do that when it seemed literally everyone wanted my blood. I had to learn the hard way that that wasn't true by the person who was able to put up with me and treated me well, and I'm thankful for that. That didn't take long. It's been a long time since I've watched All Grown Up, but doesn't Angelica turn out okay by that point? My memory says she's does, but idk if that's actually the case.

I worked at KC from '96 to '03 as a colorist then color supervisor on Duckman, Rugrats, Wild Thornberrys, Rocket Power, As Told by Ginger, The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald, Stressed Eric and then a background painter for the Chuckie cloud sequence in Rugrats in Paris, and finally colorist for The Wild Thornberrys movie and Rugrats Go Wild... it was an amazing time!

Honestly I will have to say that As Told By Ginger is one of the most underrated Nikctoons of all time, right down to the massive character development and subverting a lot of cartoon stereotypes like not aging or wearing the same outfit everyday and by them having characters who actually age and wear different outfits this show is simply iconic!

My only complaint was that some of the characters were absolutely irritating and a few really important episodes had no follow up (e.g. that episode where gingers friends tried to separate her from her boyfriend) and things went on like nothing happened. Nope. All Grown Up was a five-season show. Pre-School Daze only lived for four episodes that was glued into one television special. While it technically did air after All Grown Up in 2008 in the US, it originally aired in the UK _during_ the original run of All Grown Up in 2005. I guess Nickelodeon in the US was just not ready for us to see it yet. I am a KZbin channel based in the United States.

It was ahead of its time, I find myself coming across clips of the show and important ones too that I never realized happened in the show. We're talking about early 2000s here. There's a clip somewhere on here where, ginger is in the hospital, and Carl goes to the chapel to pray for her, Lois then sees Carl walk out and says she thought Carl was an atheist. I always thought it was underrated. It touched on TONS of subjects no other cartoon of the time would like bringing up Sex-Ed class, talking about absentee parents, and talking about depression and suicide. The show was also described as a "Feminist Masterpiece" but was still liked by boys because it was still a great show with relatable characters and didnt go the usual feminist route of either being so girly that most guys cant relate or going the dark route of just hating on anything remotely masculine. Honestly as far as "girl shows liked by guys" I think it's almost on the same level, if smaller scale, to My Little Pony in that it's a girl orientated show still loved by dudes. I have a wang and watched every episode growing up and my guy friends loved it too.

I think the thing that really killed All Grown Up! is how old the kids were supposed to be. It felt like they were trying to tell a story about high schoolers, but the kids were all around 10 with stories that mostly felt like we were dealing with 10 year olds.

It's even funnier when you realize that without The Wild Thornberrys, they wouldn't have set up a cinematic universe 10 years before Iron Man was even released! They started it with The Rugrats Movie! And also like Iron Man, Rugrats had a sequel and introduced another standalone movie from another franchise, The Wild Thornberrys. And then both shows crossed over with Rugrats Go Wild! And the universe goes even further because there's a comic where the Rockets babysit the babies! Oh, and I guess one of them dreamed up the "AAAH!" Real Monsters in one episode.

Some time ago I watched some episodes again. It brought back a lot of nostalgia. The show has a lot of the charm I remember, but Eliza... She is a horrible and incompetent main character for what feels like 90% of the time she's on screen. There are times her childish naivety is passable, but there were so many times I wished she would get her head kicked in by how annoyingly stupid she was. Her family were the best part of the show.

I'm definitely of the opinion that Rugrats took a nosedive in quality after Paul Germain and his writers left. I feel silly saying this about a kids cartoon about talking babies, but that initial run of episodes had an edge to them that the later seasons and movies lack. The jokes and scenarios were darker, the kids were allowed to be meaner, and the adults would make jokes and references that flew right over the heads of the children watching. I can watch a lot of those earlier episodes now in my thirties, and they still hold up. I actually appreciate some of the humor more now than I did growing up. Later seasons were just too sickeningly sweet for my tastes.

Agree, I think people confuse the fact that the post hiatus season but pre Dil was good. That season which premiered in 97 was already pretty bad and felt absolutely nothing like the OG run aside from aesthetics. But the first three seasons are on par with early SpongeBob and Rocko as being the best things Nickelodeon ever did.

What I liked about the studio was that, regardless of genre, there were always good adults (except for Aaaah, Real Monsters, but that's to be expected because the only adult is, well, a literal monster). Rugrats' parents were all flawed, but they still tried their best. Lois Foutley was stern, but fair. Ray Rocket allowed his kids a lot of freedom, but still had reasonable boundaries. And Nigel Thornberry was an icon.

I had an incredibly mean older sister growing up, and Angelica made me feel valid. Adults always told me she was "just playing", but seeing adults acknowledge and punish her behavior made me feel less whiny or crazy. Kids need a safe avenue to see conflict so they can understand it

I get the Angelica debate especially when you are dealing with impressionable children, but she wasn't really that bad. She was just spoiled and self-centered, yes she bullied babies, but it was just mainly her just calling them dumb and lying to them about he world and then experiencing it for themselves. Even weirder when you think about how much people at the studio fought tooth and nail to make it happen, and the fact that this very same studio wrote a rule stating not to Outsimpson the Simpsons, when Rugrats did just that with Angelica. I imagine the rise of digital animation couldn't have helped. Like you mentioned, the art styles of shows from Cartoon Network translated really well, but the more loose styles are a lot more difficult. The popular art styles of various eras are heavily influenced by the limitations of the methods they were produced in afterall.

The Rugrats Movie soundtrack was so good! A lot of rappers and musicians had voice cameos in the film and sang in the movie. Devo played a band of singing monkeys, Busta Rhymes voiced the Reptar Wagon, and Beck, B-Real from Cypress Hill, Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest, Lisa Loeb, Laurie Anderson, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Lenny Kravitz, and more all voiced singing newborn babies. The song 'This World is Something New to Me' makes a great "guess the celebrity voice" game.

I always blamed the "dumbing down" of Rugrats to be executives, but just as head canon. I'd never thought to look into it, but learning of Germaine and his influence yet early departure from the show leads me to believe that when I look up the time he left that it will probably coincide with when I started to dislike the show. There was a time that it didn’t feel as mature as it had once been, and now I'm inclined to believe it was Germaine and co's departure.

It feels sad to say, but I think part of the struggle is that their character designs for humans are very distinctive, so breaking into the adult animation scene feels like watching your childhood characters get into dirty situations. It seems like they could break their tone more successfully with non-human characters like Duckman or the Ah! Real Monsters cast. That final adult animated movie just looked... wrong. Like watching background characters on As Told By Ginger pole dancing. Something about their style being so THEM and so unlike anything that's aired in terms of visuals makes it read as children's cartoons, and the cognitive dissonance is off putting. To reverse it, it'd be like using the Family Guy/ American Dad/ Cleveland Show aesthetic and developing a PBS cartoon with it. The art style is culturally ingrained to one genre of content, and it feels wrong to see it in anything else. In that way, specializing so heavily in Nickelodeon and not varying their art style is what tied their own hands and set up their own downfall.

8:27 I absolutely admire the original mission of Nickelodeon, “creator driven, kid inspired.” Not a fan of how it ended up, or how icky some of the behind the scenes stuff might’ve been, though. All that aside though, As a creator myself, I’m absolutely going to try and take that original slogan to heart, especially with all the indie animated projects going on, but with some very important differences: no icky behavior at all, and also kids aren’t gonna be the only demographic! It was one of the few shows Nickelodeon aired that was willing to tackle real life issues with teens. It’s rare to see in animation because the medium is mostly used as a way to tell stories outside the bounds of reality. It was also the first of their works to tackle the insecurities and issues pre-teen/teen girls encounter (peer-pressure, stuffing, first love, heartbreak, absentee parents, etc.) While it’s considered one of their “quieter” works, I thought they were able to tell an impactful story without sugar-coating subjects for their audience.

I think the aesthetic complaints about their style were akin to the complaints people have of that 'adventure time' style or what some people were calling 'CalArts' style more recently. Once something gets popular and people see a lot of that style, it gets a little oversaturated. It's this 90s iconic style because there was so much of it, and I'm sure some people felt there wasn't a lot of variety. It's not a big deal to have one kinda grungy style cartoon, but then to have everybody jump on that trend might make you a little grumpy if you aren't a fan of that look.

I remember seeing the characters everywhere in Kings Dominion theme parks back in the day. Then they got replaced with Peanuts characters and I was sad to see them go.

The reason Rugrats is my favorite childhood cartoon, is because it was the only cartoon I ever watched as a kid that made me feel like a kid. Now when I rewatch the early seasons as an adult I can't help, but feel like a kid again. There was something so magical to me in the scripts, just enough to make you feel like you're another kid on the playground, and enough breaks away from that into reality with the adult humor and relatable views at life only in small doses throughout each episode. That changes somewhere through the 3rd season to 4th season though, I notice it every rewatch and it's like the magic is gone. Everything that was iconic to my childhood feeling like a disluded version of joy. Like it's crazy how the tone shifts in both script and animation, the visuals much more realistic, with barely anything as creative in the first few seasons. Thanks for giving that magic his name back, so we all can know who put all our childhoods on the screens for just a moment before the downfall into mediocrity that burns us all as we grow old.

My high school physics teacher was the sister of the woman who voiced Angelica. Her name was Ms Hudock. No one had any clue . This woman was very quite and a really goofy when she made fun of something. Her sister came in one day around Christmas break and we didnt know it was her until she did the voice and made everyone laugh. She even cursed at us. Not gonna lie i wish i would have it recorded. She did it just to have a little fun with us. I wont say which ones she said but it was good. I was surprised at the difference in their personalities but they played off of eachother very well and even set eachother up to make us laugh. It was a cool little treat ill never forget.

It's weird looking back at All Growed Up. I'd mostly stopped watching Nickelodeon by that time. I was a high school freshman, and while still into animation, it was mostly Cartoon Network, Transformers and anime. I begged my parents to take me to the first Rugrats movie, which they did, dropping me off and making it the first movie I saw alone at a theater. Never saw the second or third movies.But I remember being excited for the special, and remember watching it.
