In this video I talk about Goldbacks and the pros and cons surrounding this controversial gold product. Goldbacks are a currency that is made out of gold. Goldbacks can be used for barter and are becoming more recognized across the world. Goldbacks come in 5 denominations and currently have 5 state designs. There are Utah Goldbacks, Nevada Goldbacks, New Hampshire Goldbacks, Wyoming Goldbacks, and South Dakota Goldbacks. Some of the negatives for the Goldback are the fact that the premiums to obtain them are very high and they can be difficult to find. Goldbacks are quite new only being out for 4 years now and are less liquid compared to other gold products. Some retailers have high premiums on Goldbacks over the exchange rate making them even less attractive. Some of the positives for the Goldback currency are the fact that they are educating the public about gold and encouraging the use of sound money. Goldbacks also track the price of gold and have gone up in value as gold has gone up in value. Below is the Goldback website:

I live in Utah. They were the first state to come out with Goldbacks. I started buying them a year and a half ago when I learned about them in an Epoch Times article. Prices were lower then. They are legal tender in Utah for payment of goods and services. I like the idea of smaller fractional gold, just like junk silver is. Both are sound money. Shop around if you decide to buy. Don't buy from the online bullion dealers. Too expensive. I purchased mine from Defy the Grid who is based here in Utah. Besides, the artwork on these alone are second to none.

They are not made to replace bullion or for stacking. They are designed to be an extremely handy form of metal based currency. It's much easier to use a wallet of foldable bills vs a pocket of coins. Except that they are not particularly durable, and it is recommended (by Goldback and by others as well) that you never fold them. Goldback even makes and sells a special wallet to carry them in so that they don't get folded or crinkled in any way, because as soon as they do, they lose value.

This is true for so many. Goldbacks are a gateway to gold. Everyone should be excited about this fact. 75%ish of new gold buyers come in because of the Goldback. It's curious how our biases make it easy to reject wisdom...instead of rouse our curiosity. Take the $4k ozers. They only see that number and freak...but that is only what they see. It is only half the story. They could trade that 4k in GBs for 4k in gold if they were curious not blind.

Gold Backs being fractional gold to spend is no different with their premiums as any smaller fractional gold to buy. Dealers will charge what they charge, so it is on the buyer to shop around for a premium they are willing to spend. Gold Backs will always have a place to both spend and barter with. As always, it's wise to get in early to take advantage of a good thing.

As far as melting them down to get the metal, Why would you? It's easy to stack, it can be a collectable, and it remains recognizable and easy to carry. I've only been buying the 1/1000 as they're easy and cheap to share. Thanks for a very informative video. I was 100% skeptical about Goldbacks before watching your presentation. After listening to your comments, though, I can honestly say I might consider viewing them in a different light. There are people out there who say, "Never buy fractional gold! It's too expensive!" I don't consider that a valid perspective either because higher premiums can often buy something of tangible value, like greater liquidity (which 1/10th ounces of gold can provide) or purchase confidence (which well known reputable dealers and shops provide.) I'm not saying I'll now start buying Goldbacks - I still have concerns and questions - but down the road it could be a possibility, at least if they become appealing to a large percentage of the population. Good point about GB's introducing a large number of people to the notion of using gold for barter.

I think Goldbacks are a great way to collect gold for those of us who don’t have the capital to buy 1oz+ gold coins/bars. Fractional rounds/bars do the same thing, but if I’m paying the same high premium, I would rather have the better looking, easier form of barter. I won’t buy a ton of goldbacks, but wouldn’t hurt to have 10 50’s, 10 25’s, 20 10’s, 20 5’s, and 50 1’s as a very solid rainy day fund to go along with the rest of your coins and bars.

You wouldn't be paying "the same" high premium. Goldbacks are about double the price of gold, while fractional gold coins and bars can be had for around 30% to 50% premiums. That being said, have you ever looked at the premiums for jewelry over gold and silver bars,coins, etc? I see Goldbacks pricing being more in line with that model, but Goldbacks premiums are MUCH LOWER than jewelry.

@@razorsyntax Oh I have purchased them... that's how I know I won't be purchasing any more. You CAN'T reclaim the gold from them, and with incredibly few exceptions in very specific locations and states... NO ONE treats them like they're gold. They aren't viewed to have intrinsic value... by MOST of the country. They're more like a collectable, since 99.99999% of the country doesn't see them as either actual gold or as having any intrinsic value. YOU may be fond of them, but so what? They aren't real money.

@@razorsyntax And you're damn right, my reasons are my own. You just sound like a bratty kid who needs his purchases to mean something to other people. If you like collecting GB's cuz you think they're pretty, I mean...knock yourself out dude. But I wouldn't take one from you for barter during SHTF, because almost no one would turn around and take it from me. Which means it's next to useless as a barter item unless you happen to live in specific areas of specific states. If you have to try to convince everyone else you talk to that something has value, then it's value isn't actually seen as being intrinsic by all. You're gonna end up with a pocketful of GB's and will still have to blow someone for a can of beans. You do your thing man, I'll watch from a distance and be thankful I chose to stack stuff that everyone sees as valuable.

@@syberphish People sell valuable things all the time without knowing their value. It happens when people don't understand the underlying value of something. It appears you've done the same. This idea that you can't reclaim the gold from them is a complete and utter lie. If you believe the gold can't be reclaimed, then you have a legitimate case against the company for selling a gold product that doesn't contain gold. Obviously, you'd lose that case but I absolutely want to see you try for the precedence it will set. Anyone with a $100 smelting machine could reclaim the gold in a Goldback. You're lying if you say otherwise. I don't care what 99% of the country thinks. Consensus is often times very wrong... which explains why people would choose fiat over money (which is and always has been Gold/Silver). All gold, in whatever form is money because it has the 7 properties OF money. You're just going to have to cope with the fact that Goldbacks are money and always will be.

My opinion of Goldbacks is that presently they are a great collectible investment. Mintages are low and usage is low but growing. The Goldbacks are more fragile than gold so their survival rate is greater. Adding the fact this is not the premium vehicle sought by bullion investors, it seems right now a perfect collectible - those who bought in 2019 and 2020 already see the fruits of their investment. Finally, the artwork can be quite beautiful and characterize by its folk-like element, add in its creation in response to the historical events and attitudes of the times, Goldback have both a little of the collectibility of art pieces and historic artifacts. If you live in an area where they are used for transactions then you could afford to get a little more for that purpose or tips.

The nay sayers don’t understand what goldbacks actually are; they AREN’T for hard core stackers that stack as much gold as they can at the lowest possible price. It is an educational tool on precious metals, a specie currency in the 5 sane states that allow it as currency, and as a conversation starting gift card in the 45 states that don’t; read the fine print on them and it will explain how to exchange them for fiat rags… As long as you are careful where you buy them, you should at least break even and have super cool looking conversation starters as well!

My initial reaction was to scoff at the 100% premium as well. Then after second thought, I could see the dollar collapsing well below 50% of its value in the next 5-10 years. Then there's the variable of gold likely appreciating so instead of viewing today's -50% return, I chose to view it as a future return of 50-200%.

Goldbacks are the optimal form of money. They are backed by their gold content and the utility of their physical form. And this isn't a "cost" dictated by goldback, inc. This is a value supported by the market.
@heavynoose7761

In theory yes, in practice, no. The cost of production making up half the value of the Goldback makes it unsustainable as a currency and makes it semi-fiat due to half of it's value being based on people being willing to trade for them, so more value than a dollar, but silver and gold with low premium is much more realistic
@danielbbq

@@danielbbq obviously if people are willing to buy them there is a niche in the market, but it would be incredibly difficult to convince people to switch to a currency where half the value is the supply/demand of the gold and the other half is supply/demand of the product itself. If you offer someone 2000 dollars worth of gold rounds or 2000 dollars worth of goldbacks they would take the rounds every day of the week, and likely would do the same even if it was 1500 dollars worth of rounds.
