Gandl's crimes are paltry compared to that of Hal Chase, who was told by his Reds teammates they didn't want him on the team because he shaved outcomes. Chase was also banned for gambling.
@TheBadBaseballFanАй бұрын
Thats actually a pretty good point
@cedricgist76142 ай бұрын
Thumbnail is a good teaser - but from what I know of the history of baseball, another contemporary California first baseman deserves the title you’ve given Gandil: Hal Chase. I don’t know when I first learned of Chase’s reputation as a corrupt player. I first came across Prince Hal as a batting champion for the Reds after a stint with the Highlanders. He was supposed to be the finest of fielders. Yet, over the decades, more information came out from Bill James and other sources that Hal Chase was a gambler and suspected of trying to throw games. Christy Mathewson was among those who felt Chase was corrupt. It’s also rumored that Hal Chase had a hand in the Black Sox scandal - and eventually, Commissioner Landis banned him from the game. I had to leave this comment because I’ve been -sadly- fascinated by Chase’s story for decades. Edit: Pardon me. I thank you for this profile of Chick Gandil - you did your research. I also want to acknowledge your statement that someone even more corrupt may have played and we just don’t know about him - even someone more corrupt than Hal Chase….
@TheBadBaseballFan2 ай бұрын
As I was doing the research I began to realize the depth of fixing in early baseball. It was extremely common! I figured the title was hyperbole, but given that Chick was a central figure in the greatest fixing scandal ever, it's not too far of a stretch! Thank you for sharing about Hal Chase, I had come across him before in reading but never dug deeper. He might actually have the moniker of "Most Corrupt" for sure. This kind of feedback is what makes content creation awesome, thanks a ton!

Thank you for the conversions to modern values to really see how lucrative Chick's mayhem was! Great video as always BBF!
@paulabbott20222 ай бұрын
I'd like to introduce you to Hal Chase. The real most corrupt man in baseball. Some say (probably slight exaggeration) that Chase played in more fixed games than honest. Some say he was the real cause of the 1919 Fix because Gandil and his cronies seen Prince Hal get away with it, year after year.
@TheBadBaseballFan2 ай бұрын
You're actually the third person to comment in regards to Chase! I came across his name while researching but didn't dig deeper, and too bad. The biggest difference between men like Chase and Gandil is it seems Chase relished in the fix. It's fair to say that Gandil was a product of his situation, but Chase seemed to seek out fixes.
@captaincarl82302 ай бұрын
@@TheBadBaseballFan I heard that whenever Hal Chase trotted out to his position, which was 1st base, some of the fans would yell out "What's the odds?" or something like that.
@paulabbott20222 ай бұрын
@@TheBadBaseballFan Some sources said it was Chase that introduced Gandil to Abe Attell and Arnold Rothstein, maybe that he put the idea in Gandil's head. He told teammate Rube Benton that he won $40,000 on the fix. Loved the video btw. I've been obsessed with Black Sox all my life
@alzo78912 ай бұрын
Chase was also a first baseman. It’s a more critical position than one would think- you can drop the ball or let your toe off the bag, allowing a base runner. If you can find it, check out a great book called ‘The Glory of Their Times.’

So it was new and popular in 1919. The fans in Cincinnati sang the song in the crowd of an early series game, celebrating their team's success. Ring Lardner, a sports writer who suspected the fix was on, sat in the stands, heard them, and wrote this little parody. As an American who doesn't really follow football as much as I should, I had a chuckle when learning of its connection to West Ham while watching Ted Lasso.

The salaries were low, but not compared to the rest of MLB. In 1919, the White Sox actually had one of the highest salaries in baseball. I'm not saying that they were paid what they were worth, but compared to the rest of the league, they were doing well.

I think this point is extremely important to remember when discussing the Black Sox scandal. So many people solely point their finger at Comisky when he was just one of many reasons this complex situation occurred.
@BookemDanno3112 ай бұрын
By the title, I thought the video would be about Charles Comiskey. Silly me.
@TheBadBaseballFan2 ай бұрын
By proxy it kind of is! Comiskey was a piece of garbage, for sure, but was not much worse than his contemporaries. Obviously the title is hyperbole, but if it pertained to Comiskey it would be nearly as hyperbolic

HOW can the players on Sox be blamed while the skinflint Comiskey name lives on ...?
@TheBadBaseballFan2 ай бұрын
Not to justify Comisky at all, he sucked as a person, but the way he treated his players has been significantly overplayed throughout history. His greed was certainly a factor in this whole situation, but not the only factor. The player's greed played a role to an extent, as well as the sports gambling industry in Chicago, and of course the mafia as well.
