There is usually 3-4 items in drawers or on tables or counter tops or cabinets which would be there favorite item then you burn it in the fireplace in the van and if the screen shakes with a loud noise you chose the right item but you only get 3 tries and needs wood as well

I think the ‘X’ in the book is so you can rule out things you have tried and got nothing on. So if you don’t have it then it can’t be some ghosts whilst when you leave it blank those ghost with things you have tried and got nothing on are still a possibility. If that makes any sense.
