On the matter of blood magic, I forgot who says that to skarlet but in mk11 someone does say that excessive use of it can mess up your brain and make you insane. So maybe he doesn't use not because he isn't powerful enough for that but because the risk just isn't worth it for him. Also fun fact: the actor who did shao khan in the classic era also dated the actress who did sindel for a brief while. If the characters themselves being canonically married was a reference to this or if it was just a coincidence I have no clue.

A funny detail I like is his war hammer, exactly how heavy is it? In his MK 11 entrance two henchmen are straining to carry the giant hammer and Shao Kahn just carries it easily. It’s even a background interaction in MK X where anyone can just pick it up and swing it, it just makes this mental image of swole Kitana carrying it from one of her intro dialogues with Shao.

@@jaiden3473 To be fair, have you see the MK2 comic John Tobias made back in the day? It features Shao Kahn without his helmet and he does not look human. He has more pronounced forehead spikes compared to what MK11 features. But also look at some of the native species of Outworld: Onaga's race of dragons; and the Shokan, who are half-dragons. The true form of the Gods/Elder Gods is also that of a dragon (as seen on the MK logo), and going with the Midway timeline canon, Shao would be a God like Raiden, therefore also a dragon. So even if the artist confused Shao Kahn with Shokan.... it's dumb luck that it fits with established lore. It's more fitting than most of the stuff the NRS writers come up with.

If you look at Shao Kahn's moves (Armageddon onwards) you'll see that they have a green glow to them. Souls in the MK universe glow green too. So Shao could be using souls offensively. He's just not morphing into people, instead morphing souls into spears and hammers that he then throws at his opponents. Shang Tsung also used souls as projectiles, usually in the form of skulls or orbs.

Many of these facts on his origins reinforce a theory I had playing as him in 11. I had speculated that Shao Kahn is the illegitimate offspring of Onaga and an Outworld god, making him a half-dragon demigod-a unique being all his own. His legitimacy as the ruler of Outworld would be solidified by this idea, as he the convergence of Outworld's Royalty and its Divinity. He serves as Outworld's Ruler and Protector; the Dragon God-Emperor if you will. A perfect ruler for the realm, save for his ambition that ultimately led to his and his empire's downfall. I think a very interesting story could be told with this idea in mind, but I also agree that not knowing exactly what he is is very compelling as well. So it is probably best just to leave it a mystery.

This was just a theory I came up with based on the many allusions to Onaga in Shao Kahn's gear and appearance. It doesn't matter whether this is true or not; he's a great villain regardless. As for Taven and Daegon, I will admit that I have only passing knowledge of the 3D Era, as I started with MK9. However, that doesn't mean that other Demigods can't exist; it isn't exactly a unique concept. If this theory offended you, I apologize. Believe what you want, I have no intention of changing your mind. Just putting an idea out there because it's fun to speculate.

Here's another one: Shao Kahn's actor for the original MK2 and 3 wasn't that tall. He stood at an average height of 5'8. The developers scaled up his digitized model in game to make him taller. Shao Kahn is definitely the big bad of all Mk. Honestly though as far as his species, it was confirmed cannon he is was the protector of Outworld, so he is pretty much a fallen God like Shinnok is a fallen Elder God. I honestly don't care what NRS said about the change to retcon that cause it's already clear they weren't paying attention to the lore or characters anyways considering what they did to characters like Shao Kahn, Sindel's nonsense retcon, and saying nonsense like Kronika is more powerful that The being that all the realms are made out of in The One Being. Like I said before, I just hope NRS listens to the fans and is working hard to fix their mess so MK 12 can be awesome.

@@kingol4801 You're intitled to your opinion, but that is clearly not true when you look at the facts of the matter. Sindel's retcon clearly contradicts a lot of the lore (not to mention turning her into a one dimensional combination of Shao Kahn and Tanya), thus creating massive plot holes in which not only hurts Sindel, but other characters like Shao Kahn with him looking like an idiot for thinking she putna barrier around Earthrealm. As for Kronika ,she was a fool who caused her own undoing and is so weak, she loses to everyone, including Kano in Snow Blind. That is certainly not someone more powerful than the being all the realms are made of. Fortunately though, NRS has listened to fans and the retcon has been undone as of MK Onslaught (along with what the Mk 2 film has in store, so it'll likely continue with MK 1 as well) and NRS clearly knows Kronika is a terrible character and will very likely never return.

Shao Kahn is not just a play on "shogun", as we see with Kotal and Kitana, "Kahn" is the title for emperor or king in Outworld, which was in turn borrowed from real world Mongolian, as in Ghengis and Kublai Kahn.

Personally I prefer Shao Kahn to be a God similar to Raiden. It shows what Dark Raiden could become given a few millenia. Or Shinnok if he wasn't so pathetic. As for Shao being half-dragon or such... It makes sense in a way - hear me out: The true form of the Gods/Elder Gods is that of a dragon (the iconic dragon seen on the MK logo / Raiden even uses this form in his Injustice 2 Super move). But even if we say Shao is NOT a God, look at the native races of Outworld: Onaga is a full-blooded dragon, and the Shokan are half-dragons. So Shao being an Outworlder could mean he has at least some dragon DNA in him. Question is, does the draogn DNA of Outworlders come from the Gods too? After all, Edenians are decendend from the God breeding with mortals. So it's possible that native Outworlders are related too. And thus, even if Shao is not an actual God, he may still be decended from one. That also raises a question about Reptiles race; the saurians - who originated on Earthrealm. Supposedly decended from dinosaurs, but do these have a connection to the Gods too? After all the Elder Gods did create the realms, the lesser Gods, and mortals. Did Raiden take the form of a saurian back then? To fit in better with the native people (saurians) of Earthrealm. Or did he use a human form akin to Argus and other Edenians who would've looks human around at that time? I'm intruiged to see a Raiden in a saurian form. Anyway.... getting back to Shao Kahn. If you look closely you'll notice that his special moves (in Armageddon onwards) and the weapons he summons (like the spears), have a green glow to them. What else in MK glows green? SOULS! So instead of using souls to morph into people like Shang Tsung; perhaps Shao Kahn has absorbed so many souls that he can just throw them at people in the shape of a spear or hammer and not have to worry about losing too much power. Shang Tsung also seems to use souls as projectiles in the form of skulls and orbs. Either way, I don't trust the NRS writers to know this much about the lore, nor care to explore such things. They're too busy retconning their own retcons. Maybe MK12 should be called MK: Retconception.

Which was onaga since it tells us in mortal Kombat deception that shao kahn is the one that killed Onaga. also in MK 11 his weaponry in customization (Onaga's successor, gift of Onaga) and references in the game (Raiden vs kitana.. My personal thoughts on MK 11 and shao Kahn is that he is onagas b@stard hence what his appearance is different than the Sho gan (however you spell it) because they're a race of half dragons but onaga is the king/ God of dragons. My personal head canon and theory for Shao Kahn's race is that he's a former God who was stripped of his godhood after killing Onana and taking the throne of Outworld.

It makes sense. It's said numerous times Raiden isn't allowed to interfere with mortal affairs, but can step in to protect Earthrealm from outside threats. Shao Kahn actively enslaved the people of Outworld, invaded and merged with other realms and enslaved the people of those realms too. Merging realms is kind of a big no-no in the eyes of the Elder Gods, and we've seen that they are capable and willing to promote and demote Gods on all levels; from demi-gods like Taven, to Elder Gods like Shinnok, as well as Raiden being promoted to Elder God, before resigning.
