Lived in W-S for years... (not by choice, mostly because of work and circumstance. I worked downtown for years and lived both around Wake Forrest and Baptist Hospital, in both apartments and single family homes.) The second I was able to move out, I did. Now I avoid driving through W-S at all costs due to crime and congested traffic, especially around 52 and what was business 40. As a bonus, the property taxes in W-S are insane. I believe W-S has one of the highest listed increases in property taxes per year in the entire nation based off percentage, which is not a surprise, as my entire neighborhood slowly became a bunch of transplants from California with more money than sense. The dollar in California might not go far in San Fran, but it's "rich money" here in NC. The one thing that I found truely odd about W-S is the fact that is has a lot of the problems of bigger cities, but without the infrastructure or entertainment value of them. At least if I lived in Charlotte or Raleigh, I might be around crime, but I would also be surrounded by music venues, interesting social spots, bars, theaters (both traditional stage and movies), parks, etc. Downtown Winston is basically a bunch of resturaunts that come and go by the year and boarded-up businesses at this point with a bus station in the middle. There are a few local theater places and music places in some unlikely looking spots, but not many at all. Winston is a city you work in and ocassionally visit when you need to find a "big box" store like a Best Buy. (Which is never well stocked, or well staffed. Lots of the merchandise they DO have is behind locks now.) Also, downtown Winston tends to go through major swings of decline and refurbishment. It used to be sketchy back in the early 2000's, then it was rennovated with a lot of tax dollars/investment and was becoming quite nice around 2010 or so, but now it's in another downswing since a lot of the local buisnesses shut down or went with more "remote" job options after 2020.

You should see the way Greensboro's property taxes have increased. They didn't increase the tax rate, but they revalued homes so much higher it equates to a major tax hike. I used to work at RJR in downtown W-S, so I know what you mean about the town.

I was born in Winston-Salem back in the 50s, it's been bad as long as I can remember. Charlotte was just below NY City in the late 60s and early 70s. I was stationed in Goldsboro at Seymour Johnson from 73 to 78 and Kingston wasn't that bad. I've also lived in Omaha Ne, and Amarillo Tx, now I'm in New Mexico. Unless I find something better, this is where I'll be buried.

Im from Kinston, I left. Bodies be dropping like basketballs due to fentynal. 5 people I know died in the past 3 years cause of drugs. I watched these kids grow up. They all were barely in there 30s at the time of death. COME ON KINSTON, GET YOUR SHT TOGETHER. Opening bars and making fancy parks, HOW ABOUT SOME DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAMS. And some places for these people to go instead of a BAR for crying out loud.😢
