Unfortunately some people just don’t care about anyone but themselves. You handled it the best way possible. Having words with the boater would have only escalated things for the worse. I told you this when we went fishing and saw this scenario on one of your previous videos and I'll say it again. You're a class act. It takes emotional maturity to handle situations like you did ESPECIALLY when he's putting you in danger. I think we as anglers owe it to each other to respect others safety and he clearly was only worried about himself. Then he just rolls up to the spot completely blowing up the whole area. Unreal man. Again, your perspective and handling of these scenarios have actually helped me when I've ran into similar situations. Keep being the good dude you are.

My Father started teaching me how to drive a boat over the past few years and the first thing he told me is keep your head on a swivel, I follow that advice every time I go out and try to respect others on the water especially kyakers, but watching this guy have his bow so high up and him sitting down is a huge red flag, and I highly respect you for not getting in to a argument with the boater cause ive heard the same thing recently and have been following it, you don't know what the other person might do, Stay safe and love the videos!

Have you considered getting a kayak light pole with a flag and boat beacon lights to be more visible because it looks like you blind-in and you don't have anything to keep yourself more visible to other boaters

I ran into a similar situation last year. I was fishing Bayou Sara and a State Trooper actually almost took me out. He was flying round a hairpin turn full-speed and I was on the other side. Luckily I got out of the way and he slow down for that could have been a very bad situation. There are so many people that run these river systems and go full speed around a blind turn not worried about anything. You handle it right. The one thing I will suggest is putting up an orange flag on your yak. And wear bright clothing or bright color life vest. I used to kayak myself and know that I would be hard to see now that I own a boat. Something's better than nothing.

I was scrolling through the comments to look for this comment. I think your colors blend in with the environment a bit so boaters hauling can barely see u. I did the same in a harbor and had a bunch of sailboats getting close to me. I was a bit angry at first but then realized I'm blending in with the ocean and hard to see. So now I have a pool noodle with a flag at one end wrapped around my fishing pole I'm not using. Hoping that helps them see me, thinking of adding a light also. Stay safe out there y'all!

Absolutely, you handled that dangerous situation correctly. I experienced a dangerous situation on the water while fishing with my dad a couple years ago while fishing on a favorite creek down in VA. My dad and I hit the water right at sunrise. We had been fishing for a couple hours when a local crabber came through checking his pots in the area where we were fishing. He had checked several pots in the area near us when he started yelling and cursing at us. He accused us of stealing crabs out of his pots. He even threatened to sink our Jon boat. I only keep my cool and tried to ignore him because I didn't want to put my dad in any danger. I tried to explain to him we are only here fishing and we did not bother his crab baskets.

I also own a 20 foot Legend XCalibur and from spring to late fall i am on some body of water and i see the same thing almost every time, where some guys think that they owned the waterways and either pretend that they dont see other fishermen in the water and will do exactly as that guy did, NO ETIQUETTE. My friend! You handled it your way which is admirable but how are these people going to learn if we dont point out the errors of their ways? I never confront. You never know who is in the other boat. Generally I find the guys fishing are pretty courteous with their boats in relation to kayakers. It's the water skiers and PWC people I have issue with. The lake I deal with the most boats is heavily used and big enough and deep enough to have plenty of decent fish but mid day it becomes a a bit of zoo. Prior to 10:00 AM there is a 8 mph speed limit. Powered boats have to go in a counterclockwise pattern. My first kayak was a gray mottled sit in and it was pretty invisible. So was my PFD. After some near misses like you had, I decided my next kayak was going to be a bright color. It's orange (the Old Town orange/black). My PFD is red and I have a 4 ft YakAttack light/flag pole which sits in back and I use it all day or night.

I think you contradicted yourself a couple of times. You said he was coming full speed, but wasn't on plane. Well, it can't be both unless it was a severely underpowered boat, which it didn't appear to be. It more appears that he was running and gunning and was starting to slow down, but didn't really try to set the boat down until right in front of you, which was certainly it courteous. You also said that he dropped his trolling motor right where you had started fishing. It wasn't until after he passed you that you grabbed a rod which was behind you. Having said that, the boat on the right (him) has the right of way. Had he been on plane, he would have left less of a wake than being nose up. He should have sat the boat down well before he did, being that close to you. The move I'd have made, after I stopped screaming, would have been to paddle right in front of him and start fishing. Again, with you not having a rod in your hand or even on the front deck, there's no way for him to know you were planning to fish that spot. Perhaps coming up beside him and saying "hey man, I realize you didn't see me, but there are stumps in here, so please be careful." That way, you've acknowledged that he's an idiot, but didn't escalate the situation.
@agentwynnoutdoors

The boater was wrong because he disrespected you by cutting you off and 2nd his wake was disrespectful. When he dropped the trolling motor he knew what he was doing strike 3. For you I would recommend getting a flag for more visibility. Be safe bro!

Very informative video. Be safe on the water . Thankfully, you're 👌, and handle the situation well. Too many people on the water that don't have any sense or respect. A short story for you. I was with my girlfriend and we were hammering the Flounder off "my pier" in one particular area. Four guys were fishing close to my other pier on the opposite side. They saw us catching Flounder out of the spot close to the shoreline next to some grass about 30 feet from my pier. They pulled anchor and pulled right on top of the area we were fishing. We couldn't even cast to the area. They didn't say anything but they just kept looking at us like we were crazy. I didn't say anything to them. We just put up our gear and went in the house. So, disrespectful and so disappointed for my girlfriend because she was having such a fun time. I still get upset about that because we like you put a lot of time, money and effort to go to my place and get away from all the traffic and people in Houston. Thanks again for all you do to share your time on the water.....

New to kayak fishing, As a boater too, agree this guy ignorant to fish in your spot. But not getting mad or confrontational was a good choice on your part. That said, you were barely visible! Kayakers really need to try to make themselves as visible as possible to boats (!!!) so they can spot you, AT A DISTANCE, as soon as possible. My husband has same kayak/color as yours. And even with his orange kayak flag up and his red pfd vest, he's still hard to see at a distance, especially on a cloudy day. He says I'm hard to see, too, at times, even though my kayak is bright yellow. As a boater, whether you are planed out, going 40+ mph, or bow up if slowing down. ...even if watching carefully... I know from experience that a small, close-to-the-water kayak or float tube can be difficult to see at a distance. You can be practically on top of them before you know it. So I can understand this guy not spotting you. If he had seen you sooner, he might have veered off to another spot. May have been getting back at you for giving him a scare. As for us, we're planning our next trip to a reservoir where we know there will be fast-moving boats. Before then, I plan on making taller diy flags for us, with a larger, windless-type orange pennant, unlike the typical kayak flags you see on Amazon. And maybe adding a light on top for those cloudy days. Also, I might add a bird scare device that sparkles in the sun. Anything to help get a boater's attention to spot us quickly at a distance (that is where they are looking, to check their course, and for other boats). We also have air horns and whistles attached to our vests if needed. After watching your vid, might also try avoid fishing where we would be in a bad blind spot to a boater. That's just my two cents. Definitely agree boaters can be a danger. But responsibility goes both ways. Kayakers also need to try to minimize that danger as much as possible. Thanks for the vid. Gets you thinking.

@@southernsalt Yup, in both your case and mine I'm sure they knew exactly what they were doing, and they deserve some serious old time correction, but it's just not worth the trouble these days. People who do this are literally bottom of the barrel characters. If I see a man fishing somewhere, I pedal on by and go somewhere else. I always smile knowing I'm 10x the fisherman and will get my fish either way. I also laugh when they go sit on a spot like that and fish totally the wrong spot. Or they park right on top of the hole and fish everywhere but where the fish usually hold, lol. 🤣🤣🤣

Couldn't see your entire kayak stem to stern but I didn't see any type of position making flag to make yourself more visible to other boats Remember for many boaters and fisherman Kayaks on larger bodies of water are still a relatively new thing and kayaks are very hard to see especially if your mind set is to look for larger boats and not smaller close to the water kayaks
