equipment. I fish the entire gulf coast. I've been fishing this area for 25 years. I live in Texas but got fishing licenses from Texas to Florida. Gotta always have to safety equipement and gather info, tide charts and a game plan.. Have checkpoints to xall someone to let them know you are safe. Know the direction of the current so you don't waste energy getting to your destination and so you don't overshoot your destination.

Bless you for cleaning up after other careless people, something I used to do when was fishing on the rivers here in the UK. I remember a bailiff complaining to me that people can carry full tins of beer to go fishing but are too lazy to carry the empty ones home. Still happens too. Tight lines Dee. Tony.

Yeah, I recently had to pull my hatchet out on a guy walking towards me that didn't like me reminding him and his buddy that they'd left empty beer cans laying around, that were lighter to carry now then when full, as they were leaving. Seen I was serious and did carry them to about 10 feet from the trash can then dumped them. I hope that restored their manhood in their minds.

I always dress with the expectation that I might end up in the water. I only wear lightweight synthetic materials that shed water easily. No heavy jackets, rubber boots, or anything that could get waterlogged. And if the water is really cold like it gets out here on the west coast I wear a 2-3mm wetsuit under my outerwear. Luckily I have never capsized out on the water, but I'm always prepared just in case I do. You don't have to get ready if you stay ready. Stay safe out there man.

@VitaminDeeTV being on the water is the most peaceful thing there is in the world we live even there is no fish on the line at the end of the day. Just to be with nature and enjoying the sound of nature is the best feeling I get ever time. Bringing home a fish or two is a blessing if it happens but I mainly go to ease my mind. This is exactly why I keep a radio with me. Everyone should have one. Just saying.
@someotherdude
@someotherdude Жыл бұрын
Bring along: Whistle, or 2 different whistles to make a distinct sound that you and friends agree on beforehand. Or, marine radios which are waterproof and clip on to ur life vest.... Or best: cell phone in a small tupperware container that has an actual latch. The good thing about a cell phone is they have a compass, this can help you find a friend or show you that you have drifted a lot. Any time you are on a large body of water with an offshore wind, kayaking is not an option. This is true even of small open boats. You are one failure away from death- a motor that won't start, a leak, out of fuel, or a dropped paddle. Capsizing in cold water from a kayak, you will likely die, at least with a sit-inside kayak. You will not be able to crawl back in a kayak without tipping over and exhausting and freezing yourself. Here in CT on Long Island Sound, several tragic incidents happen every year. It doesn't take much at all for it to happen.

Always wear the PFD. Get yourself a couple of handheld VHF' radios. Good for communicating and invaluable in an emergency. Cell service not always reliable. Have you fished the upper Escambia? Good redfishing - fish south of Hwy 90, launch on the Pace side.

Awesome video and great advice that cant be said enough! Someone has probably already said it here, but high visibility flag on a pole and a floating phone lanyard/case could also be lifesavers on big water bodies like that. Guides commonly use FRS radios too, that way you can clip it to your vest and not have to dial a phone to communicate.

Over here in the Bay Area (San Francisco), we have a group called Fresh & Salty Kayak Fishing. Whenever we are out in the ocean, we all have a VHF Floating radio to communicate with each other. (Channel 69) We always check each other before we head out to ensure we have the proper safety equipment :-) Which includes: 2 way radio, PFD, Whistle or air horn, knife, etc.
@hardrockminer-50
@hardrockminer-50 Жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. Floatable, waterproof VHF tied to the PFD. Especially if you're out alone. Way more likely to get help fast by calling on Channel 16. If you don't drop your cell and it doesn't get waterlogged when you're in trouble,911 could be good. Even in warm Florida water, it seems jeans would be a poor choice to wear on the water.

This is so cool (actually warm). Here in Bellingham WA you never go out with jeans on! The water is 44 deg F year round. The winds are usually mild, but waves can swell quickly. Your fishing looks killer. Here, kayak fishing is best on lakes (my opinion based upon my kid's comments). For kayaking, we use open-top in summer (day trips) or enclosed for winter. They closed off rockfish (a common angling fish) until it recovers in Puget Sound. We used to fish for rockfish and they were a great angling fish (med small - good meat - fillet - very mild taste - great small boat fishibng). IMO the scariest part of kayak fishing is being dunked in cold water, with swells, and having to swim after your kayak. I've done that - but not fishing - not fun, buy you swim real quick! Take care - keep up the fishing videos.

I would say of the 300 or 400 times my wife and I have been out , we have only experienced these conditions 3 times with one time being worse. We had 3 miles to go one time before we got out of open water in 3 footers crashing over the bow constantly but we nosed into everything and continued on. The next time we hid in the salt marsh under a bridge in shallow water for about a hour. The last time we had a mile or so to go in open water in about these same conditions. If you have a kayak that you maintain and you make sure its completely sealed. It becomes a balancing act. Always nose in and dive the nose , never parallel waves. Most brand of sit on tops can take quite a bit of abuse if you maintain staying upright.

For starters, don’t ever go out in jeans and those giant ass boots. If you go in, you’re gonna regret wearing that. Secondly, that kayak looks like it’s way too small for you. I kayak fish in the gulf literally a few times a week and this is pretty mild considering how quick it can shift. The main thing I look at is the wind. The wind can either lay the swell down or exacerbate it.

Something similar happened to me and my buddy when we were fishing out of Spanish Fort, I was in a rental paddle yak, one of those Ascend 10t's and my buddy was in a PA14. Headed out that morning there was light chop and pretty still wind, that was not the case on the way in. Just about at the mouth of the Bay when we headed back, I was taking on probably 8oz of water with each swell and it wasn't looking good. Had him tow me to a bank across the river to bail the water then had to dig real deep for 2 miles upstream in a headwind. If I wasn't an athlete I'm not sure I wouldn't have been pushed out in the Bay
