In 1998, upon hearing the news that starting quarterback Billy Joe Hobert was out for the season, free agent QB John Fourcade asked the Saints if they would sign him. This was despite the fact that Fourcade hadn't played in 8 years, was 38 years old, and was not even very good when he played in the NFL in his prime. This went about as well as you'd expect. This is the story behind the 1998 Saints and the bizarre drama

But wait, there's more. You see, Fourcade wasn't out of practice in 1998. He spent the spring in the IPFL as the QB of the Mississippi Fire Dogs. He was also their head coach. After 1999, he became the team's GM and kept coaching. Oh yeah, HE WAS STILL THE QB. The same was true in 2000. In 2001, he became the HC of the Mobile Seagulls, a team that moved from the IPFL to the NIFL. HE WAS STILL QB. I should also note that he did all of that despite his last pro experience prior to that being in 1994 with the Milwaukee Mustangs.

My guess is that he figured it couldn't hurt to ask. All they could do is say no. The Saints were partial to small-college quarterbacks from that part of the country. Bobby Hebert was one, Fourcade was another, and in 1997, they had just signed a guy named Jake Delhomme after he'd gone undrafted out of what is now UL-Lafayette. If you were Cajun and could throw, the Saints were the team to call.

Will always remember Fourcade for the way the Saints finished the end of the '89 season with him at the helm. They missed the playoffs but in consecutive weeks they went into Buffalo and beat the Bills in the snow. Then beat the playoff bound Eagles on Monday night and in the last week of the season thrashed the playoff contending Colts. Had they not started out 1-4, they might have been a playoff team themselves. With Hebert sitting out in '90, Fourcade was the starter and his poor play early on caused them to trade for Steve Walsh.

Yup! Also, their 12-3 record was second best in the entire league and woulda won ANY of the other 5 divisions in the league without even needing tiebreakers but of course as luck had it during that era we had to be in the 49ers' division and they were the only team with a better record at 13-2. Furthering the bitterness is that we only lost by 2 points in our loss to them so that game was very winnable.

Anyone that counted out Fourcade never watched the replacement games in '87. He didn't win them all but he left EVERYTHING on the table trying to win. I watched him limp so badly that he almost had to be helped to the huddle. No doubt in my mind he played through a concussion at some point. He had major heart and a love of the game / competitiveness that I saw rivaled only by Brett Favre. One thing I noticed is that Fourcade had a sprinkling of the "Flutie Factor" - that intangible something that some QB'S have where everything says they shouldn't be even a moderate success, but somehow the magic falls into place and they are. Not sure what all happened in 1990, but that close SF loss on Monday Night in the season opener was HARDLY a gross failure. The Niners were in the middle of their Super Bowl dominance, and the Saints barely lost out. Was Fourcade one of the all time greats? No, but there's dozens and dozens of QB's I'd rate lower.
@footwork216
@footwork216 2 жыл бұрын
He wasn't great in that Monday night game but sometimes Montana is going to pull a Montana. However, in the next few games after that his play didn't really improve much, the win over Atlanta notwithstanding, in which he was pretty decent. Obviously they felt that he wasn't going to take them where they wanted to go, and thought Steve Walsh would, and he did, but that season only, and one and done in the playoffs. Once Hebert came back in 1991, he was back at QB1 where he belonged. Will always wonder how the '90 season would have turned out had Hebert been there and stayed healthy all season.

From 7:56 onward, the descriptions & criticisms of John talking to coach Ditka in 1998 was longer than the actual phone call between the two men. I knew John a little bit, he was a realist, when he placed the call to Mr. Ditka he knew it was a long shot but figured it was simply worth speaking to him, plain & simple. As for John's play in 1990, while yes he did make some mistakes, it is greatly forgotten that then Saints offensive coordinator Carl Smith decide to change the offensive philosophy going into said season under the anticipation that John would start & Bobby Hebert would not be back at the time. John was told that they didn't want him to run beyond the line of scrimmage, trying to make him a pocket passer even if he had a wide open lane to run through. He enjoyed football a lot & his passion carried him for a good long time in the indoor leagues. As for John's play in 1990 being the worst for a Saints starting QB--not even close. Mike Buck's only start on 12/26/1993 at Philadelphia was awful and Univ. of Michigan alum Larry Cipa starting late in 1974 wasn't much to write home about, although both men tried their best under the then organizational circumstances.

IIRC, he also took over the starting job in Tampa Bay from Steve Young. And this led to Young getting traded to San Francisco. The rest is history. So, in recap: Montana replaces DeBerg; DeBerg gets traded. DeBerg replaces Young, who gets traded. Young replaces Montana, who gets traded.

Buccaneers had some fairly exciting offenses toward the end of Testaverde’s tenure; their defense just stunk on ice, and they couldn’t ever win road games in cold weather. Testaverde wound up having to try to do too much, leading to lots of INTs, but he had some decent wideouts (Carrier, Hill, etc.) and could make throws. The ‘91 Buccaneers are a lot of fun to play with/against in Tecmo Super Bowl.

Fourcade was a great athlete and mobile QB. He had an issue playing within the framework of coach's wishes if things weren't going well, because he always had the ability to make plays on his own talent from earlier years. He and established Saints QB Bobby Hebert were rivals from even high school years, so there was no love lost there. He also had the tendency to just throw the ball up if he decided to stay in the pocket instead of trying to make plays with his legs. Coach Mora eventually just said he wasn't going to be his QB.... even if drafting weak armed Walsh was a mistake. I still remember Archie (Manning) in disgust as his longest team QB running TD in history was broken during that strike game. Archie was WWL Radio's color commentator in those days, and was another mobile, athlete QB who didn't have great success with the Saints earlier on. Archie is still an icon there. WhoDat!

I wasn’t paying attention for the first few moments and I thought you were talking about carson Palmer. I was pretty confused since carson finished second in the mvp votes in 2015, meaning he was both very good, and has played since 2014😂

I remember Fourcade....sorry but I don't remember him greatly impressing anyone, maybe because New Orleans never really impressed the rest of the league anyway, What I do remember, was I thought it was neat / interesting that Bobby Hebert and John Fourcade were both of possibly French/Cajun heritage, which was great for the New Orleans area. I'm just placing that educated guess based on how local media pronounced their surnames.

I remember watching that guy play...back in the day when Saints fans wore bags over their heads. His own teammates thought so little of him that whenever he got clocked by a pass rusher (in the day when they could bury the QB into the turf), which was often because the Saints were so bad, his teammates would walk back to the huddle and just leave him laying on the ground trying to clear the cobwebs. I actually felt sorry for the guy.

It is a stretch to say that Hebert was "struggling." Fourcade was a local sports story and he was much ado about nothing." It had huge ramifications as well. It led Jim Finks to play hardball with Hebert. He held out and with that great defense, the offense faltered with Fourcade. Hebert would return and we would win the division. Unfortunately, the whole affair would lead to Hebert walking.

He wasn't retired. He went undrafted then was signed by green bay but got cut before the season. So he spent 3 years playing arena football (which is when he was bagging groceries) then he got signed by the rams and was their back up till he got thrust into the starting job n led his team to the superbowl.
