The Most Different Writing Styles I've Read.
Manhattan Transfer by John Dos Passos
Under a Glass Bell by Anais Nin
What they have in common is the influence of collage.

Hello! I've been a fan of your KZbin channel for a while now and I really appreciate the effort you put into your videos. They've been a valuable resource for learning [topic]. However, I've noticed a few areas where there might be room for improvement in your recent uploads. Looking forward to seeing more great content from you.

Your insights into the distinct writing styles of "Manhattan Transfer" by John Dos Passos and "Under a Glass Bell" are fascinating!

Both authors are ones I intend to get to at some point. To be honest based on those reading I'd agree that Dos Passos seems inducing of some sort of torpor whereas the maximal shenanigans of Nin are also pushing me to the same space but with a not knowing where to look in the picture of my mind due to the muchness of everything. As to who else is vastly opposite I'm not too sure....I shall have to take a long look at my shelves and see what comes to mind. That said - I am drawn to Rosemary Tonks as one of the ends of the poles given the clipped accent and very classic BBC voice mixed with rather gruesome and grim metaphors.

I think the publishing industry was going through a phase back then when they were confused about what the public wanted to read about. People in general don't want to read fancy language with words strung together just to try to impress readers with how special and sophisticated the authors thought themselves to be. People really prefer to read good stories with interesting characters in fascinating locations. I wonder if these two books could even be considered for publication these days. At one time the stream of consciousness style was considered publishable (ie: The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner) and it was all the rage for authors to try to outdo each other in this genre which in my opinion is extremely boring, useful only for English professors to torture their students with, as required reading. "Read this word salad and try to find meaning in it." Oh dear, what difficult times for students! Anyhow, thanks for the challenge; I appreciate the comparison. Unfortunately, I just categorized both books in the same way. I've heard of Manhattan Transfer, but not the author. And I've heard of Anais Nin, but not that book, and I've never read anything either of them wrote.

Thanks for the lovely long answer and the information. I have heard mixed reviews of The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner. Some people love it but I don't think it will be my thing. I hope you are reading something great. Best wishes.

Over the decades Anais Nin gained notoriety not so much for her erotic diaries but for the falsehood about other authors in it. I tried to read her in the late 80's when I was reading Henry Miller's books but her writing did not engage me. I haven't come across the short stories you talked about, though. Dos Passos was a favorite of Jean Paul Sartre and French existential writers. Very nice reading.
