I grew up with my dad knowing this homeless dude in the forest. He had an arm ripped off and successfully reattached, so lots of scars. When dad and I would hike to see him, he treated me like a nephew. Great guy, outlived dad. He sure looked homeless though, didn't clean up well at all. Once I moved I was working and noticed this big dude who walked the mall daily. I knew the security well, so when they were about to kick him out for digging for food in the trash, I stopped them and got him any meal he wanted. Turned out his blood sugar crashed, and his eyes lit up after he got food. Since he'd walk the mall due to a condition daily, we decided together to use "walking man" as a nickname. We became good friends. He was very tall, especially compared to me, so this girl with a crush on me said "why'd you go sit with him? He could've killed you!" I really miss those guys. I don't care how you live so long as it doesn't harm anyone. I'll be happy to be your friend. One thing, never brag about helping anyone! That's pathetic, plus it's against my beliefs.

I was homeless and flying a sign to buy food for a good long minute, and I can tell you from experience that a substantial proportion of the population thinks that anyone who refuses to walk off to some unknown place with a complete stranger on the vague promise of "something good" is faking it, or must just want money for drugs. Speaking of: I didn't drink alcohol at all when I was homeless (I rarely ever drink anyway), and I didn't use recreational drugs, but the way people treat the homeless as though they're all alcoholic junkies is ridiculous, as is the notion that addicts and alcoholics don't also need the same basics like food. I never drank, but there were times I'd buy a beer to keep someone else from going through DT without so much as a bed to lie in. The pervasive attitude, including among many sober homeless people, that addicts deserve suffering and death is pointless cruelty that harms non-addicts on top of the inhumane cruelty it inflicts on addicts, and makes it harder for addicts to actually stop using.

I mean honestly. Some people I know do charity work and they have these little gift bags that they give out to homeless people. Basic necessities like a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, some snacks, and some utensils. They even work with a church that helps raise money so they can buy small toys for the homeless people with kids. Then they go driving around the Twin Cities and give them out. It’s really not that hard to just do this right

I was homeless a couple times in my "past life" and I was also on drugs. Every homeless person I knew either drank or did drugs. There were times when I came up on some money, and let me tell you this: a couple hundred bucks goes fast on the streets. It's not "life changing," it's day-changing. You'd be able to chill out for a few days rather than hustle, that's about it. Don't get me wrong, it's a very kind gesture. But it's definitely not life changing.
