@@Ggggggfefdff I partially agree with you but one major issue is Moviebob is baffling with his political views. His support of eugenics would rightfully drive off the vast majority of people. He describes himself as a male feminist but it's so clear his main priority with it is that it will help him get laid any actual belief he might have in it is completely lost. The video dosen't really go over it but Moviebob views his idea society as some Wall E like one where you can just sit around all down plugged into a virtual reality world and interact with your favorite fictonal characters. He generalizes such massive groups of people and instantly goes to wiping them out that it seems like a parody but it's been going on far to long for that to be the case. I want to call him a Libertarian Surpremacist or even stretch it to Liberal Surpremacist (though the more I think about it I don't think Liberal Surpremacist works here) but his belifs fall more into some Virtual Reality Authortarian hell where he is at the top of the hierarchy and just about everyone else is vermin to be removed through force.

This was a real trip considering I remember getting into a disagreement with Bob on Screwattack years and years ago. Before he won that competition he'd asked for feedback on one of his videos and I replied with some advice essentially saying to chill out on the "gramers, halo and madden are ruining video games". He sent me an extremely rude message which claimed I was too "REDACTED" to understand his video. A few months later he made a video that claimed every single game in existence should be third person because it was inherently better than first person (???). I felt somewhat vindicated about who was actually "REDACTED"

I think you forgot to the mention the broader topic that Bob's entire identity, even his politics, is based around consuming media. He's all socalist and wealth reform, but he endlessly worships big media corporations like Disney and Warner Bros because they made things he watched as a child. He also genuinely believes his movie reviews are genuinely meaningful art and activism. His entire identity is based around being a man child

He's sort of like a modern day Lester Bangs, thinking on it. The thing about Lester was that he believed a lot of things, but above all else he believed that good art should be genuinely challenging. Like, he believed that The Shaggs were an all-female band with an attitude that women should want to emulate because, in the decades to come people will always listen to The Shaggs for the first time, realise that they suck, and then never, ever forget what they heard and tell another person about them so that the cycle could begin again. But, there are hundreds of all-female bands and female singers with massive pop hits that will be forgotten because they strived to be too perfect to the point where they become unmemorable. He also believed that 'good' music is music for children because kids will be introduced to it at a young age, be told it's good, and then for the rest of their lives they'll be like "This AC/DC album is good because Daddy told me it was good when I was 6," which is why 'bad' music is so important, because it's music for people who think for themselves, not people who just accept what is popular as 'good' or accept what their parents told them was good when they were young as 'good'. I don't think that Bob Chipman is capable of thinking that deeply about the things that he reviews, but he sure thinks that he is.

I did a bit of quick math in relation to Bob's twitter habits. So assuming Bob made his account on the 1st Day of March, 2011, that would mean that 4,561 days have passed since Bob initially joined Twitter. His number of tweets currently sits at ~309,100 since the account's inception. On average, that is 68 tweets per day, which would equal out to ~2,040 tweets per thirty-day month. To put that into perspective, the most active users on Twitter, according to some random statistics I googled, send out 157 tweets... per month. With these numbers, that means that Movie Bob tweets ~13x as much as Twitter's most active monthly users, and ~2040x more than the average Twitter user.

My son Baron loves it, he loves video games, you should see him- he's so good at video games. And you know what's so great about the Super Mario Bros, is they're a pair of brothers, a pair of hard-working brothers, hard working brothers from New York and they're from an Italian family. We love our Italians, don't we folks? A pair of hard-working brothers who fight through level after level to defeat the great menace Bowser and I tell you what, what he does to the Mushroom Kingdom is an awful lot like what Sleepy Joe and the swamp have done to our great country during the last 4 years....but these brothers, despite how Bowser sends his minions to come after them, the same way this administration has come after me and I know they're coming after you....despite that, they work together and they beat Bowser and they take back the Mushroom Kingdom. And I know that you all- we all- have the power to take back this wonderful country of ours if we work together and take down the people who are holding this country captive, no matter what they throw at us. @@12ealDealOfficial AVGN didn't really get political at all. Real-world politics generally don't belong in any form of entertainment. In his book he makes it clear that he really dislikes Trump and his wife wrote something on his site once about it being a "caucasian sausage fest." That's the extent of AVGN's political discussion that I've seen since 2006. The content has always been about playing the games, ranting, and having fun. That's why it's so great and timeless! Imagine if AVGN talked about the racism and sexism in every single game. It'd be terrible. He said something about a teacher saying "X-Men, huh? That's kinda sexist" and him replying "what's wrong with being sexy?" but that was all just a (fun) joke based in the reality of activist jerks in the 90s loudly and stupidly complaining that generalized use of "men" to mean "humans" really meant "only males."

@psycholuigiman Male feminists and Trump haters weren't against him so much as they didn't want to associate with him. This is a very common thing in any kind of politics, you'll accept their vote but when the chips are down you'll disown them. As for the hateful brand of right wingers, they just don't act insane. They are the bullies that pick on people, get really nasty, spiteful and personal, and then act either as a victim or the "rational" party if person they pick on bites back. Usually that brand of hate takes the form of sly mockery, the spreading of lies and a smug and superior attitude. If you look at the ones with the most "insane" views, like anti-vaxxers or flat earthers, you'll find all of these traits apply. And just because people WILL deliberately get the wrong idea if I don't specify, I am specifically talking about hateful right wingers. People who want to turn this in a generalisation slinging match can F off.

I laughed so hard reading "political views entirely focused around being vindictive towards people who were mean to him in High School in 1997" because that is 200% accurate to Bob. I am embarrassed to admit that I used to watch a lot of his videos back when I was younger. One of his biggest "running gags" as it were was him constantly saying that the 90's objectively sucked, as if it were the most factual statement ever with no explanation needed. Dude literally said this dozens of times for YEARS whenever bringing up anything popular from the 90's. It brought a lot of sour feelings from some of his younger fans that remember the decade fondly, myself included at the time. Later on in what I think was a Q&A video he finally admitted that the reason he said this literally boiled down to "because in the 80's I was a happy kid, in the 00's I got to start making a living off silly internet videos, and in the 90's I was an awkward teenager that got picked on." This was in his *own* words, not something to be gleamed from context clues. It had NOTHING to do with media, the economy, social norms, or anything like that. Fair enough on him for feeling this way, but keep in mind that he had spend dozens of videos acting like the 90's being a bad decade was an objective fact based on scientific observations instead of being 100% circumstantial to his own unfortunate experiences.

What happened to Moviebob is exactly what happened to Shmorky, a popular internet content creator who sold his soul to the "culture war" and let it ruin his life to the point where everyone turned against him. In Shmorky's case, it was Tumblr and identity politics, while in Moviebob's case, it was Twitter, Gamergate and the anti-Trump hysteria of 2016 and afterwards. Of course, Bob didn't have any creepy fetishes like Shmorky did, but did become a completely different person after they got into modern social media. I'd like to make the argument that Twitter didn't necessarily destroy Eugenics Robert's mental state in 2016 so much as it was ultimately a mask falling off moment. Bob was *always* like this his whole life. Most parents give their kids goals and aspirations at a young age to cultivate a sense of healthy autonomous agency into young adulthood. His parents made the mistake of having TV and Nintendo raise him with very little meaningful interaction with him (which explains how estranged Bob is to his own family outside of enablers like his brother). Bob and his family share Chris Chan's stubbornness for improvement since even early childhood; both of which involved rejecting therapeutic and medical health at an early age. The end result was Bob relying heavily on his junk food being his *only* form of comfort food. His fringe extremism is his main personality. Bob has created an insulated cocoon with his "junk food" of consoomerism that whenever he sees Nintendo or his narrow politics come into question, he feels personally attacked. His personality is attacked. He feels in theological danger with a fight-or-flight mentality that only let's his artery clogged digits do all the flying on a smartphone keyboard to Twitter. If it weren't anymore evident in his own book no less, Bob is a coward. He can't face his own living family, let alone respect dead ones to show condolences. He hasn't used the money he made through Escapist or Geek to move out his mom's "basement apartment". He's just miserable in the falsetto of his eco chamber of self-indulgence, because that's all he has. That's all he'll ever know of the world he's too slacktivist to engage in or how he might be in danger of humanizing the same vicarious mean 'ol jock bullies he sees the rest of society Bob envisions anyone different than him to be.

Moviebob's political imagination is too small to think beyond an individualistic level. He can recognize that there are ills in society, but rather than his enemy being concentrations of power or any particular systems or mechanisms of that power, he thinks everything bad would go away if we just got rid of all those dumb bad people that support bad things, as opposed to good righteous "worthwhile" people such as himself. So he can have some principles, but only to express that people are "good" or "bad", rather than opposition to general ideas. His single-minded obsession with Trump stems from his inability to comprehend the system that would create and prop up Trump, instead of the orange man himself. Moviebob is the Mario answer to Sonic's Chris Chan. The man is so drugged on politics that he's basically mentally dead. The guy thinks he's a genius and a thinker when the truth is he's more of a sheep than actual sheep. Before he would consider Bayonetta an example of a female badass, but when Sarkissian said she's a sexist character Bob would denounce Bayonetta. Gamergate was where his political lunacy came out in force, but the only 'epic' moment for Bob there was when Totalbiscuit wiped the floor with Bob by reminding him that Bob was a college dropout whilst TB completed University and concluded that Bob is a clown. Concerning is Bob's opinions as shown in the Moviebob or Nazi segment. His rhetoric sounds something closer to Nazi ideology. As for the book, well, it definitely sheds some light to Bob's madness.

The story of MovieBob's descent into madness hits hard for me, but not because of MovieBob himself. This story reminds me of another content creator named AniMat. He's a Canadian animation and cartoon reviewer/historian who started off quite strong. But as the 2010's trekked on, AniMat would go through the very same beats as MovieBob. Like MovieBob, AniMat became an incredibly toxic and hostile individual addicted to politics and demonizing anyone who disagreed with him, became an ardent user of Twitter, and would act in such a condescending and holier-than-thou manner that it became hysterical and even kind of funny. By the end of 2020, I stopped watching his videos due to how irrational he got and how far he fell from grace. Now, AniMat is not as radical as MovieBob (don't get me wrong, he's still up there). Some tragedy happened on the USA or in his native canada? Trump's Fault Covid? Trump's Fault Floyd Protest? Trump's fault He trips and hits his face on the sidewalk? Trump's fault Add that to his squeaky voice and overreacting and one day he says to his viewers "If you hate me for always talking about politics on my ANIMATION podcast/channell then unsubscribe" I said "I had enough of this dude" and unsubscribed. @@monstercombo007 Heh, I remember the days when he had a massive bias against Sony Pictures Animation. I believe it came to a climax when he said that the animators who worked on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs should consider a career change. Yeah...that's just cold. But, personally speaking, I'd rather take all of his biased criticism against Sony than a single second of his political rantings. A key issue is that he's incredibly arrogant, acting so smugly about what he's talking about that you don't want to listen to him. He wants to be seen as a serious commentator, but it always devolves into him screaming at the top of his lungs at those who disagree with him. A key example of this was during his podcast episode on the results of the 2020 U.S Election. This podcast was what caused me to give up on him, specifically when he went after anyone who was a centrist or politically neutral. To add salt to an open wound, a few days later, he updated the description with a non-apology that made him look even more tone-deaf (it's lost to time now). However, I think the biggest issue I have with him is that he's just not a very good critic. Granted, he started out quite strong when he began. But he started making reviews in 2009, and even during the late 2010's, he never changed his style...at all. Compared to dozens of others, his reviews come across as formulaic, bland, and very rigid in terms of structure. Combine this with the egotism and addiction to politics and you've got a recipe for disaster. Because of him, I learned about movies and series that I never knew about. If anything, there's that. But when it comes to using the internet and growing, you take what you know and improve and hone your craft. Many reviewers and content creators know this, AniMat didn't. He simply never grew up.

Thanks for mentioning just how absurdly opinionated the Gamergate Wikipedia article really is. You should also check the talk page, where 2-3 power editors engage in personal attacks and namecalling with whoever tries to discuss the article or its sources. Whichever values Wikipedia is supposed to uphold, that article does a great job of completely throwing them in the trash. Seeing how the site admins allow this makes you wonder where else they sacrifice any kind of rigor for an agenda.

Gamergate is so fascinating when you see the mainstream sites like Wikipedia covering it compared to the smaller or lesser known ones covering the same topic and same applies for those covering it in retrospect. How aggressively one side fights to uphold their values over the other and how far they’ll create their subjective narrative of the whole saga.

The same thing I say to everyone who has a problem with wikipedia, bring sources and be ready to defend yourself. Even editors can't escape if the problems get put to a vote of consensus. I take issue with the implications that Bob’s content was ever good. I was a moderator on Screwattack back in the day and his winning that contest was the beginning of a huge downswing in content quality on the site, and I got a lot of shit for not welcoming his work with open arms. Oh, and no matter how much I love the church scene in Kingsmen, Moviebob seemed to miss everyone's reaction while it was happening and Harry being disgusted about what he did afterwards. G-G was such a fleeting memory for me, but I believe what started it was a game designer, Zoe Quinn had a “text-adventure?” game called Depression Quest and got ALOT of praise from journalists: more than you would often see in games of that genre. It was then that there was speculation that those praises were “bought” and she did favors in order to give her game more mainstream attention. A common phrase I kept hearing during this G-G controversy was “Ethics in Game Journalism” which then became widespread culture war in the end. 16:58 Of COURSE you would! Why wouldn’t you do this!? I haven’t laughed this hard when this quiz was a central point in a podcast episode!
