17:45 actually, guptill did reveal whether the video was made ironic or not! during his interactions with his commenters in his "Dylan Guptill" Channel. He has stated that the top 10 hottest sonic characters is "half ironic" stating that the entire video was made as a joke but at the time was not aware about the ages of the characters. He didn't want to be seen as a dangerous creep so which is why he was so conscious about taking down commentaries making accusations about him.

Eggman was conceived as Eggman by Naoto Oshima; SEGA of america just tought that sounded silly and renamed him to Robotnik in english release Which also sounds silly and fits even less with the rest of the cast that has simple descriptive names like Sonic or Tails but regardless; Eggman is the original name and Robotnik was made-up by SoA. They tried compromising in Adventure english script by making Eggman a nickname and Robotnik his real name, then immediatly just made Eggman the main name in SA2. Worth noting in the japanese dubs he's NEVER called Robotnik, even in the game where his family is revealed and has the Robotnik name Eggman himself is never refered by that. @@sandsunderthetable.6625

There's something deeply ironic about Richard's adamant hatred of arbitrary changes and redesigns of Sonic when a lot of Sonic's early Western years were heavily altered from the Japanese version to start with and SatAM was an incredibly loose adaptation. A lot of the "changes" were actually just undoing prior localization, like Eggman being named Robotnik or the characters living on Mobius.

No joke, the the storyboards Richard made for his Sonic movie idea are extremely well drawn. He's a very talented artist. It's a shame he's battling some mental illness demons, because he could have a solid career in animation.

Except he didn't draw any of them. He hired multiple people to do his storyboards and art for his movie pitch. And by "hired" I mean he actually barely paid any of them (the ones he did pay) and those he didn't pay he promised to pay them once the movie was picked up. There's at least one person who initially worked for free doing his storyboards and soon after they wanted payment for all the work they did they struggled to get any amount of money from Rich. One of his storyboard artists was under the impression that he was the only one working on the movie because Rich refused to let him contact any of the other members of the team working on the project and that person eventually ended up leaking the storyboards because of how shady Rich was. On top of that, Rich had no problem plagiarizing work from other fans who had no ties to his movie. Rich found a fan's redesign of Robotnik he liked enough that he wanted to use it in his movie. He took it (without asking the original designer) to one of his artists, asking them to simplify it for animation and to make a few minor tweaks. When the original artist of the design found out, Rich denied having ever seen it and accused the artist on his team of having stolen the design. Eventually his artist came forward and revealed that Rich had given it to him and the only reason Rich's artist copied it was because he was under the impression of the original design having been made for the movie itself. And even after the truth about the whole thing came out, Rich still continued to lie about it even to the point of STILL pinning the blame on the artist who was part of his team. As a matter of fact, just a few years ago Rich got a ton of flak within the Sonic fan community because he was caught uploading other people's artwork, removing their signatures and watermarks and passing their works off as his own, including the art of a person he considered a friend. The person who leaked a small handful of screenshots from his social media accounts of the stolen artwork reported there was dozens more artworks he was claiming as his own (probably at least a hundred or so) and when Rich found out he was being exposed he nuked his accounts. The screenshots still exist though. He was even stupid enough to claim artwork from a high profile artist with over 100K Twitter followers. He took a piece of artwork this person did featuring two characters, removed one of them and renamed the other (with no other changes) to be his original character (do not steal) but was left the shadow of the character he had edited out still in the image. Eventually Rich came forward several months later and claimed that he had contacted all the artists he had stolen from to apologize to them. And as luck would have it, ALL of the artists happened to forgive him! So if the artists he stole from should be nice enough to forgive him, maybe the Sonic fandom should as well! Rich didn't actually provide any proof of him sending the apologies or getting forgiveness, he just expected people to take his word for it. Except that didn't happen because the artist he consider a friend? They revealed why they did get an apology from him, they never actually forgave him for what he did (they had actually been told of Rich's past behaviour prior to Rich commissioning them and they decided to give him a second chance to prove he had changed, which he blew when he claimed their artwork as his own). And to top it off, a friend of that artist whom Rich had also stolen artwork from revealed that they had never even received an apology from him to begin with. All Rich did was try to convince everyone he had done the right thing and had been forgiven by those he wronged when in reality, he was just lying in an attempt to save face.

I'll admit I only watched the video once and when it first came out, so I don't remember everything from it, but I do know that Dylan's video missed out a lot of things Rich has done over the years. Dylan said some of the more were left out because he thought they were minor and not worth covering and in all honesty, he probably knew if he covered them it wouldn't get Rich the sympathy he was looking for and would make Rich look like the huge liar and filthy degenerate that he is. Maybe that was due to some of the videos that Rich made and uploaded himself no longer being online and Rich refusing to hand them over and all Dylan has to go on is Rich's version of events, but you honestly gonna feel sorry for a guy who went into his neighbor's apartment without their knowing and tossed one of his used, soiled diapers into their trash because Kuta didn't like them? Probably the most well known thing about Kuta during the Rally4Sally era that Dylan just didn't bother covering was shortly after being removed from Rally4Sally and returning as himself, Rich was getting a ton of hate for his involvement during Rally4Sally (which also included insulting a fan artist for redesigning Sally and then sending white knights to defend him after he got backlash for it). As the fandom wasn't so keen to forgive him for all the "good" he did during the campaign because of all the bad he also did during it, Rich thought it was a great idea to post a rant against the Sonic fandom. Mainly the Sonic fans who are autistic because Rich claims that every single time he'd been screwed over by the Sonic community all those people were clearly autistic. Just never mind the fact that Rich fails to realize all the bad things that happen to him often happen because of his own actions. He did this on another one of his social media accounts that wasn't well known because he was too scared to do it on Twitter. Well eventually word got back to people with a screenshot of his little rant and he got a TON of backlash and hate for it, even from people who had defended him. And in typical Kuta fashion he deleted it and claimed he was sorry and shouldn't have done it. Funny how Dylan left that one out. But considering how Kuta has been known to act, he's probably on the spectrum as well. Hell, even the Weezer fandom eventually found Kuta's autism rant and called him out for it. Even they think he's a filthy degenerate. Near the end of the video Dylan said that "Kuta messed up and people couldn't let it go." Maybe the reason people didn't let it go is because every time Kuta did something stupid, especially when it involved other people getting dragged into his drama, Kuta never gave a sincere apology to those people, including those he did wrong by. He also believes Kuta deserves some kind of respect because his Sonic fan film was some kind of forerunner to fan films that came after? Yeah balls to that. Fan films existed long before Kuta came along and a lot of those fan films actually got made long before his one crashed and burned and no doubt there were other projects before his that failed too. Rich wasn't the first and he never pulled it off, so he isn't exactly a forerunner. And just recently this year, Rich got caught out in another lie. Rich has been saying for the past several years now that he gave up being an ABDL. Claims he scaled it back in like late 2017 and then gave it up entirely by 2020. Yeah turns out that was also a lie because between 2020 and this year Rich was using his Reddit profile to post on ABDL subreddits to talk about what kind of diaper rash powder he uses, the fact that he actually craps in his diapers and that he was actively looking for "mommies" and "diaper girls" to interact with, wanted to hire someone to be his carer and even offered his experience and expertise to 19 year old female who was looking for a "daddy" when he was 41, all during the time he had "left the ABDL community" and moved on. The main reason I bring these things up (and believe me, there's more) is because Kuta is a well known liar. He thrives on the lies because he wants to convince people he's this amazing misunderstood guy when he actually isn't. He wants to convince people he's this epic artist when in reality all he does is use pre made assets and puts them together to make posters, or you know, just flat out steals the work of actual artists and passes it off as his own. He wants people to stop bringing up his diaper stuff because he "moved on" from it when in reality he still puts diapers on and takes part in the community. I've seen people defend Kuta about how much money he makes as a graphics designer (probably because he told them) and yet I saw screenshots of Kuta crying on Twitter during the pandemic about needing money, regularly passing off his CashApp to accounts that were doing give aways, often using "I really need groceries and my birthday is also coming up" as excuses. It's easy for Kuta to convince people of his lies, but his lies eventually always fall apart on him. Doesn't matter if they are small lies or big lies, all it proves is Rich is just untrustworthy at the end of the day and people shouldn't believe anything that comes out of his mouth.

As someone who lived through this era, this video brought back PTSD I didn't know I had. Mariotehplumber was a great example of everything wrong with KZbin game reviews around that time -- they were all trying to be AVGN, but failed to realize AVGN was satirical and was more than just screaming swear words and acting outlandish on camera. Also, while I definitely remember the infamous Guptill video, what I actually associate him with most was the voice actor wars in the wake of the 4Kids recasting. He was one of the few who defended the 4Kids voice cast, which was actually the unpopular opinion at the time, so of course it only garnered him more hate from other fans. She's another character that doesn't do much, but in a season 3 episode of Sonic X, she helps Chris Thorndyke get into space to fight the Metarex along with Sonic and friends. What number's next? Seven, of course. Wave the Swallow from Sonic Riders. People always root for the good guys, but sometimes, the bad guys steal the show. Her mechanical IQ is equal to Tails. She also happens to be the smartest member of the Babylon Rogues. I wonder why she isn't the leader. Like Jet the Hawk and Storm the Albatross, her specialty is riding the air-boards called "Extreme Gear". With two very long and smooth feathers extending from her head to her calves and droopy eyes, Wave will rock your socks. If only we could see her take wing. Numero Six. Tikal the Echidna from Sonic Adventure 1. Named after an ancient Mayan city of the same name, Tikal is the daughter of Chief Pachacamac. She's yet another character that hardly does a thing except beg her father to stop being so greedy. She also traps herself inside the Master Emerald so that the water god Chaos doesn't reign terror upon the land. When you're the daughter of a person in the highest power, you need to look your best and Tikal delivers perfectly. That's why she's #6. Number #1, #2, #3, #4, #5! Ah-Ah-Ahhh! Mina Mongoose from the Sonic Archie comics. How could you go wrong with a girl that looks like this? She can run nearly as fast as Sonic and she went from being a Freedom Fighter to being a popstar singer. Next to Princess Sally she looks more humanoid than the other characters. Who could top someone who has long (some French word I don't know) hair? This female standing at number 4: Blaze the Cat. One word: Pyrokinesis. How would you like to have that superpower? I mean Blaze could play around in the Himalayas for hours and she would be perfectly fine! Also, 45 degree ponytail makes her look like a Native American. I really like the fact that her love interest is the telekinetic hedgehog Silver. The combination of mind-moving and fire superpowers make these two a reliable couple. But what really lands Blaze in the #4 spot is that her attitudes apparently more different from the other females. Next up is #3. What's better than having a female with cascading quills? How about a female with cascading quills and hair? Julie-Su the Echidna, another Archie comic exclusive has that feature. She's smart, knows exactly what to do as a freedom fighter, and even trained Amy once. She's also the girl of Knuckles' dreams. Heh, lucky him. Her older self in the series Mobius: X Years Later is just downright hot! Just look at that long ponytail! Now we're talkin'! 1, 2, button my shoe! Princess Sally Acorn. There's a lot to say about this character. She's the heir to the throne, Sonic's first official romance, the only character that used to not wear clothes, brave and athletic, the most humanoid character, and is like a mother to Tails. In the TV show, Sonic SatAM, one Freedom Fighter, the cowardly Antoine constantly tries to woo Sally, but doesn't succeed because… he's a coward! The Princess is also a semi-perfect example of an excellent love interest, although there were a couple of times when she really snapped and acted like a lunatic; in the comics, that is. But overall, Sally Acorn really stands out amongst the slew of females not just because she's Sonic's first official love interest, or because she's the only one who didn't wear clothes, but because in the comics, she grew very long hair, and married Sonic in the future, becoming the Queen. So, you've seen a pyrokinetic Cat, a swallow, two gorgeous echidnas, and even a princess! Who could possibly top those kinds of females? Well, get ready folks; this is the #1 hottest Sonic the Hedgehog female character. Rouge the Bat. If anybody denies it, how dare you? This woman can fly, she's as strong as Knuckles, and is a femme fatale, seducing other characters into getting what she wants. Instead of having one love interest, she has two! Knuckles, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Being a treasure thief, she's only interested in one object set; jewels, especially the Chaos Emeralds. There actually have been situations where Rouge's cleavage has been exposed, but it eventually got censored. What a price to pay. I think the best part about this beauty is that she wears three different outfits unlike the other female characters. And who wouldn't want to fly across the landscape via strong as Shawn Johnson, and flirt with any male, anytime, anywhere. One thing that keeps me from writing Guptill off entirely is the fact that he never did anything else bad enough to exceed the impact his Top 10 list had. Chances are back then he was unable to handle the amount of pressure thrown at him and he went full fight or flight. I'd say the changing landscape of internet content helped him in the longrun and he has avoided any further controversies, so either he had rehabilitated himself, or perhaps people saw how worse things could've been. Quick side note about Mariotehplumber, it was reveal a few weeks ago that he was trolling Pokemon fans under a new persona he called PreciousLeaf which was basically a literal schizophrenic who was obsessed with Leaf, the female protagonist of Pokemon Fire Red/ Leaf Green. I was a pre-teen when I became a Sonic fan, and these guys were cautionary tales about what would happen if I took my passion for my hobbies a little too far. What's crazier is that these videos have opinions that would just not be said by a lot of Sonic fans these days. If you said Jason Griffith is bad today, you'd get your head chopped off for it, but it was perfectly normal back during that time. It's so crazy to see what discourse about the franchise was like back then, and comparing it to today. The fandom's behavior hasn't changed, which only makes these videos age better than they should if you ask me.

I remember this stuff vividly. It doesn't even feel like it was that long ago. Back in the day, all you ever heard was people complaining about Jason Griffith and the 4Kids cast, and angrily demanding the return of Ryan Drummond and the old cast. Yet nowadays, everyone is complaining about the new cast and angrily demanding the return of Griffith and the 4Kids cast. Whenever I hear people whining "Urgh, Roger Craig Smith sucks as Sonic! Jason Griffith was the best! Why don't they bring him back?" I can't help but think "You are literally saying the exact same thing that people were saying a few years ago, only about Griffith and Drummond!" It must be so frustrating to be the people at Sega. "What? Now everyone loves Griffith? The reason that we didn't renew his contract is because people were always complaining about him!"

In hindsight, Griffith is actually good! Sack that stinky Roger! Bring back Griffith! He's the best! NO, I NEVER HATED GRIFFITH, YOU'RE JUST MAKING THAT UP!"

I'm not a huge Zelda fan, but I remember seeing that GameCube trailer that showed off the graphical capabilities of the console, and they showed an animation of Link fighting Gannondorf. They were updated versions of their Ocarina of Time designs, and fans were foaming at the mouth at the idea of a new Zelda game in this style. However, what we got instead was the Wind Waker with it's more toony art design. Now I remember fans being furious; "How DARE they scrap that awesome art style for this kiddyfied crap!" But a strange thing happened! Something that a lot of Sonic fans seem to be incapable of doing; they got over it! They gave the game a try, and many enjoyed it! The art style became almost superfluous. As long as people were enjoying the game it just didn't matter! Try telling that to Sonic fans! There were literally people who straight up refused to play games like Sonic 4 because Sonic had "the wrong coloured eyes" in it! When Sonic Generations came out, I distinctly remember people saying "Now all they have to do is get rid of that stupid Modern Sonic and the games will finally be good again!" Can you imagine a Zelda fan saying any of these things regarding Link's design? I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but these kinds of fans would be looked down upon and pitied! However, when Sonic fans say this crap, Sega then goes "Well, maybe they've got a point? Gotta cater to them, right?"

This popped up in my recommended out of nowhere and I just had to drop everything to give this a watch. What a trip down memory lane. I remember watching so many commentary videos covering literally every single creator mentioned in this video and the shit-storms that followed afterward. Remember when Guptill89 posted a revamped version of his top 10 list or MarioTehPlumber's OTHER KZbin account that people jumped on? There were so many moments during this era that spawned so many awesome commentary channels like BlackBuster Critic and Roushutsu (probably spelt that wrong) that I used to watch religiously. Though, looking back, a lot of commentaries did tread from light-hearted jabs to just outright bullying. While I'm not saying that a lot of the people (ESPECIALLY some of the creators mentioned in this video) didn't deserve the criticism, but I do recall a lot of targets were kids who were just looking to have fun on the internet and got caught in the crossfire. Of course, it had to be Sonic of all franchises that created such a negative stigma around this time. It was a wild period all around and this video brought back SO many memories of that era . Gonna sub and watch the rest of your videos, this was seriously well done!

Man, despite not being a sonic fan, I can’t believe I still recognized everyone in this video. I guess I just happened to enjoy a lot of people who crossed over with the sonic fandom, as I remember people ripping into guptil not just for the top 10 list but also a lot of his rants at the time which came across very “boomer, phone bad” in their nature. This was actually a fun trip through memory lane and really puts into perspective how long it’s been since I haven’t heard from any of these guys in years (like I had no idea Mario teh plumber was still making content).

Although I'm disappointed you kept out the Spax3 arc in which he boasted his own expertise on the law because his mom was a lawyer and threatened to use her as his attorney in order to sue people. Also wonder if you will follow this up with the even more wacky portion of the fandom that took residence on the Soniclove forums/Deviantart, most noteworthy, Alex H. Overall fantastic video! Had to mute on several portions because even to this day the cringe (particularly spax3's voice acting) was too much, but I guess that just shows that pure, soulful cringe is timeless.
