Its the same for other communitues too. A common plate/dish in other countries is treated with consideration. Lots of african inland and coastal communities eat with their hands and we're taught not to lick or put our fingers/hand in our mouths then go back into the shared food. It's a standard everywhere. Same for using a different serving spoon/ladle for main dishes and not licking it then putting it back for others to use
