Don't forget also the unseen loss of cash from not choosing a more lucrative job or skill to learn which might add up to being your costliest mistake of them all (but then if you chose art you probably knew you'd be into high satisfaction, low income jobs opposed to lowfulfilment, high pay)

The point about making/charging a living wage hits SO HARD. I don’t know why no one wants to discuss the business side of art. I’ve made a video or two about it myself but no one seems to be talking about such an important topic? I don’t get it

I am starting out on acrylics and I love Winsor and Newton Galeria. I also used a limited palette, only four colors including white (with reference to the limited palette of oil paints others use). This creates a large array of colors, saves money, and I am so happy about myself!

Can you discuss the PALLETTE you use. A few videos back I realized what you are using and it's a great idea! Especially when you were doing the small plein air landscapes and your pallete became your easel too!
@blandbrothers6 жыл бұрын
I've enjoyed watching your style change over time. You somehow figured out how to make raw, whimsical, emotional feeling pieces while retaining your signature detail oriented work. It's a perfect combination of technical skill with playful experimentation and rugged, unpolished brushstrokes. Hard to articulate but basically I just love it.
@ThePortraitArt6 жыл бұрын
@Thunderdog you can do art with a pencil and paper , or $10 paints and brushes. The material is cheapest part. In your case I'm guessing the real expense you paid is your time, from a lack of proper learning / practice / marketing guidance. The most expensive mistake (in general, not counting non-relevant specific outliers like betting all your fortune on a particular stock, which is not what we talking about) is almost* always misuse of time, that's true not just in art but .. life?

Impostor syndrome has me crippled. Logically I know I wouldn't have everyone and their aunt asking me for art unless I'm good enough, but I barely charge enough, or not even enough, to cover supplies. I just CAN'T seem to make myself charge more... The anxiety is so strong. If I enjoy the process I might even give it away. If I didn't have a partner with a "real" job I'd be homeless.

Awesome tips all the way around. I've practiced diligently at maintaining the artist status and avoiding simply becoming an art supply curator. I splurged on a limited pallete of colors in 150 ml and simply buy specialty colors as needed and in small tubes. It has served me well in both economy and education. On a side note the hair is awesome!

this video is EPIC. i started art journey and shes right NEVER stop. I do it because i LOVE it. Its my release of stress. I find i paint more mosaic style. People dont understand it but its not worthless lol. but MATERIALS and sales. it all started with a pandemic and i bought everything i could so i would be sane on lockdown. I cant find enough brushes! i have no idea the quality of paints but moving them across the canvas is learned easy enough to produce a look im trying for. Robin, as a beginning artist (hobby) your videos have confirmed some things i was already doing naturally (reference photo/ color theory book/ heavy paper to track practice and growth) keep doing what you're doing! I hope someday i can share with you my mosaic cactus in the sunset

I honestly have to give the opposite advice to people getting into art: invest in decent supplies. You don't have to get a lot, but cheap supplies are the devil's work. Passion is developed, not automatic, and trying to work with shitty supplies is a fast way to lose interest. The last thing a beginner at something needs is to get frustrated fighting with their tools, and getting confused whether it's the media or their lack of skill that's causing the problems.
@Oxalis_stricta6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the supplies. There is a difference even in small price differences. Like the difference between one dollar watercolor and two dollar watercolor can be insane.

As far as computers go... If you DO NOT ABSOLUTELY NEED A LAPTOP TO ACCOMPLISH 75% OF YOUR WORK, DO NOT GET A LAPTOP. Most desktop computers can be upgraded as needed to handle more labor-intensive work. Laptop computers are considered disposable. You're paying $1,000+ for technology that will either be obsolete in 2 years (and not able to be upgraded) AND are not actually optimized to continue functioning WELL beyond a few years. (Laptops get very, very hot and this can easily shorten the expected lifespan of a computer). Buy a desktop for your heavy-duty tasks like digital painting, video editing, 3d sculpting, gaming, or anything that generally "looks nice". These are all difficult on your CPU, GPU and RAM. Save your laptop for word-processing, internet browsing, or low-end painting doodles. This will ensure you're actually getting the equipment you need at a non-convenience-inflated price (laptops cost like 3x more for the SAME quality desktop parts) AND are able to customize the parts as your needs grow. It also means if you mess up - like frying the keyboard or breaking your monitor, you're not out the entire thing. A monitor is costly, but $300 is an easier pill to swallow than $1,000+. Many, many companies out there offer custom-built computer services for fair prices. You pick the parts you want (or tell them what you want to accomplish) and they build the computer for you and ship it out. Learning to build computers is a great, money-saving skill and is not nearly as hard as it seems. You have to do a lot of cross checking, but for the most part, it's pretty simple. This also means you can deck out your rig to make sure it's either in the way and gorgeous, or tucked away in such a way that it won't jeopardize the internal components.

Beautiful work here, and great tips, but can you please tell me, were these paintings acrylic or oil. I think Oil because of your palate and how smooth the paint was, but you were talking about acrylic, and apparently painting fast (could be an illusion!) so maybe it was acrylic.

Taxes: research how much the art that you make is taxed digital/ physical/ permanent sculpture etc. And always add that tax to your price on top of what your asking. Book keeping: some places you need to have a bookeeper by law others not so. There are simple introductions on how to , right here on YT.

The "know your worth" topic is one I recently addressed in my newest video as well. I feel like, with the pricing culture we're somehow cultivating through the internet, young artists and also those who want to commission a piece, need a healthy nudge to...what's the value of things. It is a topic that hardly ever get's discussed enough. people like to talk about art and passion.....but money, making a living? Nope.

I just saw the J.R.R.Tolkien exhibit in NYC, and got really inspired to start drawing and hopefully work up to watercolors. I have a habit of getting really psyched on some new endeavor, spending the money on all the related 'stuff,' and then losing interest or getting discouraged immediately. This time I am taking a couple blank books I acquired for free, and the regular pencils I already have a ton of, and just starting with that. I'm decluttering my place by using things up and I am making myself put in some work before I buy anything. I really hope I don't get discouraged or lose interest, but at this point I think it's wise to go slow... so I don't end up like the girl you bought the paints from!

When someone bought a photo I took of a piece of string in my uni exhibition for £30 I was so shocked and to this day feel guilty for taking the money. Absolutely clueless as to how to start pricing work when just starting out and weather I even want to sell or just continue doing it as a hobby and giving it to people who really want it.

If you spill anything on your keyboard again, use rice! It absorbs all the moisture and has saved my phone several times. Since I doubt you have airtight bags as big as your laptop, pour the rice on the keyboard and use cling wrap to cover it up. Leave it for several hours to a day or two depending on the amount of liquid and it will be gone. I would keep a special bag of rice and box of cling wrap in the same room as the computer so you don't have to go looking.
