Made me curious, so I looked on koken website and couldn't find an exact replacement for just the titanium 5 sided drive socket, but I did see they have other replacement sockets non (titanium) for around $10. Also as of today (01/16/2022) this exact kit costs $4,066

Ko-kens first export market abroad was here in New Zealand. Ko-kens are highly respected as the foremost socketry and ratchet manufacturer. Ko-ken has the max torque rating in Newtons stamped on every socket, rachet, bar etc which is the only maker to do so. If anything this brand is way beyond SnapOn for quality and details but lessor in price.

The cost of de-activating an MRI machine is tens of thousands of dollars. You have to have special trucks come in and extract and then re-install the liquid helium coolant. This set is made to service equipment around strong magnetic fields.

Ive worked on MRI and other high output Xrays. My tools from homedepot worked just fine...
@robertlitman2661
@robertlitman2661 2 жыл бұрын
The MRI techs I've known use BeCu tools. Never seen titanium before for this, but I suppose it could work. However, the steel latches and hinge on that case kind of make it useless for MRI work, because that much steel in the room will certainly throw off the tuning, so you'll be leaving the wood box outside. And are those two screws holding the ratchet together also titanium? They appear to be stainless, as do the pins on the universal and breaker. Being titanium, it's not a substitute for BeCu's non-sparking properties. Titanium is certainly the best when it comes to corrosion resistance, but saltwater divers would want pin retention on those sockets and not ball detent, so this is a fail in that field as well. Really, I don't get it. Is it about weight savings? The space shuttle carried a combination of steel and BeCu tools up, and even there they weren't saving grams by switching to titanium, but perhaps that's just because it was engineered so long ago?
@AmericanLocomotive1
@AmericanLocomotive1 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertlitman2661 Their application is generally in highly corrosive environments - chemical plants and in/around saltwater (think off-shore, ocean going work) and for MRI equipment.The screws and pins are all titanium - they just have a different surface finish. Do you really think they'd go through the trouble of making ceramic detent balls and then put cheap magnetic screws and pins in there? Koken also suggests they have a place for very weight sensitive applications - for example servicing equipment that requires a lot of climbing. Being able to shave pounds of your tool kit could be a big deal if you're doing a long climb.
@robertlitman2661
@robertlitman2661 2 жыл бұрын
@@AmericanLocomotive1 Ok, chemical exposure potentially makes some sense, though the chemicals I can think of that this would help with are so nasty that FOD is an issue, and again, the ball detent kind of kills this there (and climbing still). Think about the dropped socket that almost removed Arkansas from the map. Also, for weight, CarbonLite wrenches have to be far lighter. I'm still seeing this as a prestige product that's hardly more called for than gold plated wrench sets, but what do I know. Yeah, I kind of thought the screws and pins were bare titanium, as the rest is clearly anodized.

I went to a store in Tokyo called "Tool Factory." The Japanese manufacturers like KTC and Koken have super high-end lines (Nepros) that are sold in velvet-lined boxes, and are displayed in lighted jewelry cases. I bought a Koken wobble extension and a 1/4" drive slider-T key chain as souvenirs. The quality is equal to Snap-On. Priced about the same, too.

I'm really proud to purchased lots of Ko-ken years ago. They have a lot of extensions and drive accessories which no other manufacturers ever dreamed of or make. I'm a aerospace machinist/welder. Titanium is greatly impacted by heat and oxygen, if longevity is desired for heat cycling and shock loads it's not great. Hight heat cycling makes Ti brittle, and it prone to cracking. As long as they don't see a breaker bar or impact gun they should be fine, but I would expect a quick failure if they ever meet.

I guess it sort of feels like picking up an aluminum set and I can understand why you wouldn't want to say that when it doesn't compare in any other way but weight. I can picture that there are places where they can't have any magnetic metal contamination on highly sensitive sensors. Edit: I'm something of a tool freak, so this hits the spot with me. If I could afford it, I'd buy it for daily use, it's just too cool and super abuse resistant! Have to settle for my Stahlwille tools, I suppose. Edit 2: I paid about 600 South African back in 1978 for my entire Stahlwille set (which I still have and use, 2 sets of imperial size spanners, 1 set metric and all the pliers, screwdrivers etc). I googled prices for interest a few weeks ago, the identical 1/2" socket set now goes for 32 grand SA, and the 1/4" set for 12 grand now! 40 plus years later, those tools are still working hard, and I have never had a breakage or failure of any kind.
