We're obviously aware of and deeply concerned about the global pandemic, and are choosing carefully what to publish as forms of escapism and entertainment to help ease thoughts of anxiety, and provide an alternative from the news. We are obviously NOT encouraging anyone to travel now or discouraging social distancing. What's the friendliest city in Europe in your experience?

Ljubljana, Slovenia should be on the list imo, some of the friendliest locals I've met while backpacking across Europe. Locals will chat to you while waiting in line to purchase groceries, café staff will go out of their way to find out where you're from (Seeing as I'm Asian, pretty obvious I'm a tourist) and make some polite small talk and point out sights to go etc.

Shame Belgrade and Skopje didnt score on this list. The people in Skopje were incredibly hospitable and accepted me instantly, even met up later and went out drinking with a bunch of new freinds. In Belgrade the people were very welcoming and freindly. Ended up practicing my Serbian with the bar staff who had a great sense of humour. Even made freinds with someone who does airbnb so that I always have a place to stay when I wanna visit again. That part of the world is truly a hidden gem, recommend it. Lots of history and huge fortresses in both cities.

I have been all over Europe and would say in my experience Budapest is the friendliest city. Den Hague in the Netherlands is also very friendly. Edinburgh is also high on my list as well. My personal experience in Dublin was the opposite of friendly. Only city I have been to where the locals were extremely unhelpful and wanted nothing to do with us. But again, just my personal experience.

I agree with 4 and 5. We went to Portugal 3 years ago and the locals were very friendly. We spent more time than we anticipated just hanging out in cafes and bars in Lisboa and Oporto talking with locals. Once we got past the questions about how Trump got elected, we had some deeper conversations about culture and life.

Totally have to disagree with Malta. Never been to a less welcoming country. Everyone, from the people working in the hotels and restaurants, bars, cabs and barber shops and even many of the locals were rude, loud and ignorant. I mean sure one could think that I was the problem but I have never had that experience anywhere else in the world. The island itself is pretty cool though so definitely worth a visit if you have a thick skin :)

...athens is good only if you are walking around ancient ruins for a few days, and eat or drink quite affordable; ...but if you stay there, work there and commuting there every day, you will regret. Affordability on services comes from exploitation of very poor people from the rural areas and immigrants, living in very poor conditions while Athenians are living even fancier lives than many northern Europeans living in cities.

Athens? That's a joke. The islands are warm and amazing, but I found Athens to be very rude. I can vouch for Helsinki. It's a quiet city of reserved people, but it's very friendly and the people there are very helpful. I'd add that Stockholm was similar to me in experience. Krakow, Poland was also very friendly and welcoming.
@birdakasiakwvos2 жыл бұрын
Athenians are rude, i can confirm that. Actually many people will treat tourists good because they give their precious money there, but they treat Greeks from countryside and immigrants no good. As a Greek from countryside i prefer to stay away from the whole country rather than working in that shitty city; Other cities seriously lack of jobs, and tourist destinations are unaffordable for locals.

Athens is a tourist trap; Many people are actually rude and not honest, but many business owners will treat tourists well because of the money. A bad example are the taxi drivers that will pretend the good and honest ones, will overcharge almost all tourists (and locals also), while they show absolutery no respect for other drivers and riders on the busy Athenian streets by driving extremely dangerous, try to prevent couriers to overtake them during traffic jams, cutting multiple lanes, stopping instantly to take a fair, driving at highway speeds at night in the center etc. Also, if some tourists like to drive through cities, Athens is very dangerous, people just make multiple traffic offenses just for fun, do race even inside the center, swear at other drivers, most likely run away if they hit a rider etc. Also, many people from the countryside and immigrants work almost in slavery conditions and cheap but the services or eating out can be quite expensive. Local Athenians are driving fancy cars and take vacations in Myconos and in northern European capitals by exploiting poor peoples work, and also exploited most of the wealth from the state the previous decades, putting the money on Swiss accounts. As a Greek from the countryside and working in Denmark, i am not willing to spend any of my krones in that shitty place full of scammers and shitty mind people, better to go on nature instead of this crap Athens.

So far everywhere I've been has been pretty friendly. With that said, Copenhagen and Rotterdam are in the lead, but Lisbon was no slouch either. Also loved the island of Tenerife - people were generally friendly although I often had to use translation tools to get by. It also seemed like drivers in both Lisbon and on Tenerife were great about yielding to crossing pedestrians.

I've travelled extensively in Europe and among the few places where I came across remarkably friendly locals and no unfriendly ones at all are Liège (Belgium), Šibenik (Croatia) and Gran Playa del Inglés (Spain).
