Great video. I owned this knife. It’s beautiful. I found the handle to be too narrow and too smooth. But I liked the blade shape a lot!

Thanks 😁👍!! A thicker handle would definitely be great for this knife. I waxed it in with beewax and soaked it in with a hairdryer. Repeated it a couple of times. Makes it less smooth in my opinion. Blade is awesome. Also good slicer. Like it a lot! And like you say, beautiful 😁👍

Hi my friend. Are you satisfied with this knife after long use? Would you recommend this knife over the Esee 5 as a true survival knife?

Hi! I am very satisfied with this knife so far. This knife performs very well at many different tasks. It has great slicing characteristics. Even with a quite thick blade. I have never used a Esee 5 so that makes it difficult to make a statement about that. Using it as a true survival knife I guess the Frey will handle it but keep in mind that it is not a robust full tang as the normal, pro or X series from fällkniven. I would not use the Frey to baton the crap out of it like I would do with my A1. Maybe I am just a bit careful. This handle is a stacked leather handle with a metal pin in the middle that is stuck to the blade. If you like the same length and are ok with a bit more heavier convex (like the Esee 5? 6 mm thick blade?) I would recommend having a look at the S1 pro from Fällkniven. Yes! Main reason I would say is the capability to featherstick and doing small woodcraft work without a problem. Compared to the Fällkniven A2, condor Hudson Bay it is a more balanced camp knife. And very beautiful as well!

Nice video. Good drone porn. ;-) I´ve been drewling on the Idun for a while now. How is the thicknes of the handle? If you compare it to Bark River Brav or bushcrafter handle?

Haha thank you!! 😁👍 Idun is also such an awesome knife from the NL series. Understanding your drewling symptoms 😉. Thickness of the handle is less on NL4L compared to bravo 1 and bushcrafter 2. But my bravo 1.5 has a smaller handle compared to bravo 1. Would not have mind to have a bit thicker handle on the Frej. But no problem whatsoever😁👍

Har ju en S1Pro och en Casström Woodsman i svartek,, en trevlig MCusta folder (Nobunaga Oda) för food prep samt en liten Wetterlings skogsyxa. Svårt att motivera fler inköp. Man kanske skulle börja göra gear reviews? Ha, ha!

Det tar ju emot att säga då Frej är mkt vackrare, men använder man den inte, precis som för mig, ( Den är ju så fin) så är den väldigt mkt glattare i handen jämfört mot S1. och sämre stål än din Pro. Ska bli intressant och se om Fällkniven kommer ut med Frej i COS stål snart.

What steels would you suggest for this knife if you could choose taking into account the current price range? No idea what effort it takes to get a stacked leather handle but can imagine it is much more than “average” handle. Cheers!

@@westcoastbushcrafters Magnacut at that price. There are sub $200 knives this size in magnacut. VG10 is 1990s spyderco pocket knife and kitchen knife steel. It's fine, but not at that price range. Stacked leather is not a whole lot different from shaping a wooden handle.

@@squirts1 It's not just VG10, it's a laminated one, it's more expensive to make, and has different properties from a regular one. I do still think that Fallkniven knives are way overpriced for what they are.

@@sv1201 is still vg10. San mai III or whatever they call it is not impressive in 2023 nor are it's material properties worth a price premium over other more modern steels.

Theoretically. I use this knife and the Idun in VG10 W for Bushcrafting and hunting tasks. Compared to a CPM 3V steel, I do not see any advantages. The more important thing is the grind and the heat treatment. Today a lot of people say that CPM steels are the top of the steels, but the fewest have the experience and now what they are talking about. The most buying such knives and playing with it on the sofa while eating potato chips.
