Whats the reason for so much of a curve on a bushcraft knife blade I could see it being useful for skinning but I wouldn’t use a scandi grind for that anyway?

Wrong technique for feather sticking with a large blade.
@westcoastbushcrafters9 күн бұрын
Guess you mean the technique where you place the knife tip in the wood statically and use the stick that will become the feather stick as the moving motion? Guess we could have done it better in that case👍
@TheDavewatts9 күн бұрын
@westcoastbushcrafters No, I would hold the piece of wood off the ground when making any feather sticks, you get less fatigue in your four arm. Difficult for me to explain in words, check out someone like Rob Evans, he explains better, but users the same technique that I do, and much better I might add. It wasn't a criticism buy the way, just trying to save any aching arm, I did enjoy your video, and appreciate your input on this knife.😁👍🏻

Another great video from the West Coasters. I have the same pack. Yes, it's expensive and heavy, but it's very durable and will outlive my my other packs. Side pouches make it really practical and allow me to adjust the pack for my needs. Mesh bag (sold separately and stupidly over priced, but does double up as an ultralight day sack) is great attached to the hood and allows me to store foul weather gear or clothing that needs airing out. Wish i could buy the straps that come with the open pouches separately. They are brilliant.

Thanks a lot!😄 Interesting with the mesh bag. Have to look into that one. Really love this backpack. Always a joy to bring it along. Cheers🍻

I seriously considered buying this some time ago, its a very nice pack. But I came to the conclusion, with the price-tag in mind, that it would be overkill for day-trips, and too heavy for multiple day trips. I prefer "UL with comfort" mentality, and my 42L Gossamer Gear pack for hiking weighs less than half of this pack (709 gram). So I couldnt really see to fit it in, but its a sweet pack nonetheless. Its even pretty looking....
@westcoastbushcrafters5 күн бұрын
Wow only 709 grams for a 42L bacpack! Thats ultra light 😁👍 well chosen and nice reasoning. This backpack is a big investment and hope it doesn’t need to be replaced before a couple decades 😄🤞

@@westcoastbushcrafters yeah, I think you have a point, its most likely longer living, being that much more sturdy. But shaving off an entire 2 kg's from my old backpack alone did it for me.

For being such a versatile backpack there is not much to find about it on the internet. Only a few reviews here and there but no mods or tutorials on how to make it even more versatile. Which is weird because the loops are basically made for modding and attaching DIY pockets. The Fjällräven pockets are great of course but can be quite expensive on top of the already costly pack. And you do need the extra pockets for camping if you are not a minimalist.
@westcoastbushcrafters5 күн бұрын
Good point! Quite a lot possibilities and Fjällräven has at least 4- 5 different pockets that you can purchase and attach to the singi. Will keep that in mind for a possible follow up👍. Not cheap like you mentioned 😅

Nice test 👍 My favorite is the KS 8 -F, which has a fingerguard, and is much safer to use. The KS 8-F is used by the military. I also own the KS 7, because I wanted a lighter knife; but unfortunatly this knife has a handle which is too small for my hands.
@westcoastbushcrafters5 күн бұрын
Thanks😁👍! It is great they made different versions. We have never had the opportunity to test it but pretty cool👌. Pity that the ks 7 does not fit your hand well. Couple a weeks ago I bought the exact same knife in a second hand store in Norway. That one had a mark on the sheath from the postal company. Going to dig in that history bit more soon. How cool is that to give such a knife as a present to coworkers 😄🤘

Firelighting by spine: I have several knives out of scandinavian countries made with scandinavian steels… something about the steels that do not make huge showers of sparks. Amazing in every other way but those knives specifically require a peice of hack-saw or carbide scraper to go along with the ferro-rod. Also, the leuku by design is part of a set: axe, leuku, puuko…. Which happens to be very close to the american “nessmuk”’s kit. Great video gents! I found you guys specifically looking up stromeng leuku reviews. Good stuff. Thanks for what you do!
@westcoastbushcrafters5 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you for your comment and great to hear you appreciated the content! Regarding the showers of sparks: can that has something to do with the amount of carbon in the steel? I have a Casström Lars Fält in K720 steel that works very well with that. Nowedays it is produced in sleipner steel. Never done a good comparison on that but would be interesting to just test. People from the North with their long roots in the outdoors, fascinating. They understand nature and tools required to survive. Fantastic with similarities around the globe. Wishing to learn so much more about it. Thanks for coming by and leaving a comment!😁

Temagami we have been fortunate to test from a fellow bushcraft friend / knife collector a while ago. Gave the feeling of a very well balanced, light knife that can make super nice thin feathersticks👌. On the wishlist for a while now, not removing it but have not purchased it either. This looks very impressive, I have seen many reviews on the Fällkniven knives, but I don't understand why they only gave a short warranty. I am impressed with the Helle knives.
@westcoastbushcrafters5 күн бұрын
Not sure either but in practice it will be the (semi) fabric mistakes that warranty becomes important? Not sure, never had the problem and hope we all got lucky with the best knives. Helle really stepped up their game with the production of the Helle Nordlys and a 4 mm Helle Nord. Saw yesterday they made some really cool handles for DLTtrating. Awesome to observe 😁👍

It’s funny how the same knife can come so differently for different people - mine came with a really sharp spine, it was sharper than the actual blade edge in fact haha, the blade felt like a wide butter-knife haha. I love the way it looks and the way the handle fills out my hand, plus the wood has a good grippy feel to it. Great video!

Well… as the Pictus designer I got to say the following: 1. It’s actually a knife designed and oriented to Hunting and Processing the meat from that hunting. Also that’s why it comes with arrows heads. 2. The length of the blade is because sometimes big game don’t die by the arrow or even a shot, so that sharp spear point and long blade allows the hunter to kill by stabbing right in the heart. 3. The wider blade makes it easier to butchering and processing the meat. 4. It’s not for chopping wood but however, I suggest to chop always in a 45 degree angle, by always I mean…always, because 90 degrees would most likely damage a blade if is not designed to chop. Basically, the right tool for each task. Anyway, I can chop with different kind of blades, heavy or light and I won’t damage it, just by using the proper force and the right angle. 5. For feather sticks, just more practice 😉👍🔪 sometimes you just need to get just to how the blade “bites” and the level of pressure to put on your moves. 6. The 1095 steel also allows to make “percussion fire”. You should try that. 7. The sheath is ambidextrous 😉 Be well Walt
@westcoastbushcrafters5 күн бұрын
Hi Walt! Much appreciate that you as the designer of the Pictus take time to watch our episode and leave a very valuable comment! This will help all future viewers to get a better understanding of the knife. Thanks for taking your time! Here in Sweden they have promoted the Condor Pictus as a survival and forest knife. We have tested it like we do with most of the knives we purchase. Haha yeah with feather sticking we will never stop practicing. Every knife gives a different feeling and that is challenging and fun! Thanks for the 45 degree tip! Sometimes to keep in mind, always!😁👍 Just wanted you to know that we really enjoyed filming and the use of your designed knife. We bought it for a reason 😁👍. The knife is now located closest to the place where big chunks of meat will be processed and I can promise you that it will be used from time to time during bbq parties ( and future hunting) here in Sweden. Thanks again for the helpful tips and suggestions. All the best!
