I think what's really funny about Erebus is when you hear the title of "the man responsible for the Horus Heresy", the most cataclysmic war next to the War in Heaven, you'd naturally start thinking "huh I wonder what horrible thing must've happened to that guy to be willing to throw all of humanity and the galaxy itself under the bus." Then you later find out nothing particularly bad even happened to the dude growing up he was literally just born as the Dark Knight Joker and did everything basically as entertainment.

They don’t need betrayal or a sympathetic reason for what they do. They just do it because either it’s fun or because they are only capable of thinking about themselves. Some people might say this is cartoonish, but I say that it is sadly very realistic when you look back through history. This is why I enjoy villains like this, some people are just bad. There are writers who write satisfactory endings in BL. Abnett is not one of them. Try fire caste. A book from Peter Fehervari.
@spnked951615 күн бұрын
The BL is pretty hit and miss, as a general rule of thumb. As an example, I don't mind the Horus Heresy in concept. Having what is essentially an isolated prequel to 40k is an interesting idea that also makes for an easy onboarding point for new people. However, in execution, it's a disaster - suffering from the duel problems of too many (uncoordinated) cooks and demystifying/retroactively producing major issues for the primary setting (classic prequel issue). Putting aside the abilities of individual writers, I think the only time long form BL stories work is when they're (mostly) handled by one person and focus on very specific subject matter. The Gotrek and Felix books are probably the best example of this.

Erebus is an AMAZING antagonist. he is not 'fun' he is fascinating. love him as a villain because I love to hate him. top tier writing because you need a psychopathic narcissist back stage planner type that is unhinged, charismatic, and smart enough to hide it long and well enough to cause others demise, you need this character to be the one to cause the down fall. You can't have it be a sympathetic individual to be the face/architect of the fall unless you want some person in the audience to attribute some form of justification for the actions. he has to be nonredeemable least you make the bringer of chaos redeemable and thus make chaos a redeemable force. Chaos will always be seen in the light of its first and most influential to the setting acolyte, Erebus. Chaos's image will be forever defined by this from the readers' perspective and no matter what 'nice' feature you point out about chaos, its backdrop will always be Erebus.

Erebus seems like the kind of character who should get taken out by a random civilian or guardsman. It would be so satisfying to have someone with no power, who Erebus would have looked down on, lorded his control over and seen as completely disposable, being the person who got that one hit in to take him down. And for that person to not know who Erebus was either, so he wasn’t targeted because he was so important to this person, it was just a good hit. Erebus going out that way, knowing it wasn’t some grand plan, powerful being or all consuming vendetta that took him out, but an old guardsman with a barely working weapon or Nona with a rock, that was the instrument of his downfall, would probably mentally destroy him and it would be beautiful to see.

Erebus is the perfect amalgamation of all the worst mortal traits that spawned the Chaos Gods to begin with. He wasn't corrupted to be this way, he just is. 29:12 come to think of it, I feel like that's his ultimate motivation for *it all*. You get a flash of it in his internal thoughts at the end of Betrayer and definitely at the end of the Siege - he's doing all of this because it's the plan that has been laid out for him by chaos. And it's not like he's following the plan because he gets something out of it. He's not trying to rule the galaxy, or reach a goal, I think he's following Chaos because it's just a concrete direction - it's something to do and in the gets to do fucked up stuff in the process. B) ”You’ve done Well in brining ruin to anathemas plans” tzeetch croaked and 3 other gods nodded in unison. ”Tell us whyd you do it, for such a boon requires equal compensation” slaneesh wispered ”Oh i got what i wanted” erebus respondead ”really but we cant leave such dept unpaid, what did you desire than?” Nurgle spoke ”what ive wanted always, tell me Great ones have any of you ever removed legs off of dangerous nemesis at the Palm of your hands?” Gods look at one another, whit raising alarm at the back of their necks ”you see ive always enjoyed clipping legs off of dangerous scorpions, but the need to victimice ever more dangerous pray increesed and imperium was biggest i could see.” Chaos gods take a incospicuous look at far awey door ”unless of cource…………….how many legs each of you got?” Gods dart out of the room khorne showing slaneesh down to get to door first. ”Ah new game begins” erebus smirked, for he was still the same boy taking his childhood trauma out on ever more dangerous pray, Well almost the same he was erebus after alll and smirk widened. C) Erebus held up the source of chaos over lava flow, such a small thing and yet the biggest scorpion so far and deadliest, but it was time for croweling. ”Hold it right there dear friends” and chaos gods stopped. After a while slaneesh starts ”erebus, dear, why dont you put the source of chaos down, so no one you includead gets hurt” ”but getting hurt is what its all about, the thing that makes. ME. FEEL. ALIVE” erebus replied ”alive there is no living whitout an axe in your hand and blood splattering, there……..” khorne was interupted, by erebuses reply ”spare me, limits of your capacity for violence and its limits are too Well known to me to care for your blabber!” At this moment tzeetches demon contacted its master via telepathy (seems youre in quite a blind Eh master?) (if you’ve a point get to it NOW) (Well since you asked nicely, it took some digging through alternative timelines but he made a mistake) (again get to the point! If not scorching you will be last thing i do) (first i need a reward equal to saving your existance, little uupoo did alot of work afterall) (youll be made a lord of change for this and rule as my right wing uuuwhatever!) (uupoo and good enogh, turns out one you know as erebus was born on colchis to mr and misssess…….) ”come on guys theres no need for this i just brewed a batch of my quality brew, mayby we can….” Nurgle was Also interupted ”your good nature has no place here nurgle, for today the hand of destiny shall clip legs off a……..” ”kyle!” Tzeetch interupted erebus whit somber tone. After stunned silence erebus replied ”how do you…..whered you…..i paid kyle of games workshop good money to obscure that name!” ”Not in all timelines, in one you scammed him out of 5 euros, aperantly you Also wanted a soda” a long silence ”you know my whole name?” ”Yes and if you drop the source, last thing my demons will do is reveal it across the warp and imperium.” Two started at one another, finally erebus sighed in surrender ”fine truce?” Tzeetch replied ”you can keep source as colleteral and i wont reveal what i know and none of this ever happened” erebus looked at the source and wispered ”that really stung but not today………….never in fact” tear fell down erebuses cheek. He turned and noticed 3 other gods confused and afraid ”what about them?” ”I dont care i have a umppalumppa to incinarate or whatever, just dont end them permanently” tzeetch replied teleporting awey. Erebus took a look at 3 hunched figures, but walked awey, he was the boy who liked to pull legs off of ever more dangerous pray and it was a time that boy died, hed been stung for last time and the next Well there had to be other ways to disleg a god, hed become a man after all, time to expand ones horizons.

I actually love Erebus, because in a setting as dark as 40K it feels like there should be someone as psychopathic and evil as him, and he's pretty believable as an irredeemable psychopath. He also feels like the kind of guy who would be every chaos god's favorite pawn. That goes some of the way to countering my issue with him - which is that his level of efficacy at ruining things threatens my suspension of disbelief. He's kind of like a Deus ex Machina in reverse.

Erebus is closer to being a saint like John or Mother Teresa. His actions may seem despicable, but he's only trying to give humans the ability to worship actual gods and not false prophets.

@@agent5778 St. Erebus of Chaos undivided. I actually agree... one of my favorite things about Erebus is that he gets into Colchis's chaos cult for the wrong reasons, and then realizes that it fits him perfectly.

I fucking LOVE Eribus. Not only does his character completely REJECT the “ MUST make EVERY antagonist have a sad tragic back story to explain and identify with turning them into the antihero and the protagonist into the villian out of some childishly simplistic view of reality for reasons” trope but he also wants to be evil JUST BECAUSE HE CAN and is the whole reason we have the Warhammer universe as it is today. Lorgar just wishes he was as bad ass as Eribus.

Honestly? I love Erebus. He is perfect in my opinion. A man so far up his own @ss that he will nuke a galaxy sized empire is just hillarious to me. He deserves everything that was ever said about him and I HEAD CANNON that whenever he hears "Get up" he shakes a little. The man is genuanly amazing at the fact that he loves none other than himself, and I enjoy hating on him so much I love him.

It’s weird for me to say this but I do find Erebus really amusing for me. I’m the kind of fan of Wh40k that doesn’t take the setting seriously, but for me Erebus and the Word Bearers are really fun and hilarious to me. It’s my army since I’m in the setting and the concept of Erebus it’s really funny and interesting for me. And no, I’m really serious in my opinion about this subject.

I one time saw a post on Reddit saying how the best way for Erebus to meet his end isn’t by being killed by a badass marine or Primarch. Instead he gets cornered and is about to get his shit kicked in by a marine (let’s say an Ultramarine champion like Sicarius) and just when he’s about to get killed he teleports away into an open field in a random. Right as he gets his baring he looks up and his meet the barrel of a Lasgun pointed at his face and before he could do anything the Lasgun goes off and kills him. The Guardsman doesn’t even know who it was and was just proud that he was able to do his duty to the Emperor.

He got a lot of comeuppance. He lost his arm to Kharn, got is faced peel by Horus, He got cast out by Lorgar and many other things that he failed at. But that is what he likes about the scorpion game. Sometimes you get hurt, but he will always be back because he is that great (at least that is what he says in his own book).
