Tough as nails Kitchener boy! I remember as a kid Scott’s mom and dad handing out hockey cards to kids in the neighborhood. Salt of the earth people, incredibly nice people who had not only a great hockey son, but a good overall person

Stevens came from the era where coaches preached, "Keep You Head Up!" Today, they dangle easily knowing the defensemen are not allowed to knock their heads off.
@booradley683211 сағат бұрын
No. Lots of big hits still happen. The difference is you're not allowed to hit late or embellish a hit to a player who is being blindsided- like exploding up and through to make sure you hit his jaw. Scott Stevens never played an honest day of hockey in his life. He was coked up, juiced out and made most of his impacts doing things that would be illegal today for good reason. Because owners and fans want to see 10 million dollar players play the game, not the domestic abuse man get away with even more things because authorities refuse to stop him.

The kicker is that they only did the trap for a few years. They switched to high powered offense for their second and third Cups. In 2001, they lead the entire NHL in goals, outscoring the Lemieux and Jagr, second place Penguins by 14 goals.

Every game the Devils played was fun to watch, I am a Habs fan, and NJ was my favorite American team, mostly because of Stevens, i loved Brodeur too. We were very blessed with incredible goaltenders back then, Roy, Hasek, Brodeur, Hextall (who was a little more well known for his temper then his goaltending, but still had skills), now team Canada has to resort to Samuel Montembeault for goaltending, that's quite a far cry from the old days! Team Canada back when i was a kid had Patrick Roy, backed up by Martin Brodeur. lol. You know ur goaltending is crazy good when u have Brodeur as a back up! lol. I think Brodeur even started in a couple, if im not mistaken, it's was a long time ago! lol, and my memory isn't what it used to be, which was never great to begin with!!! lol.

Brodeur is still my fave goalie, I rank him at 1 with Sawchuk as 2. debate Roy or whoever as 3... as for legacy, despite the cups, the Lindros hit was the single biggest item- sparked a rule change. All the critics out here complain and accuse because they are jealous Devils had Stevens and they didn't. They would give up both their nuts to have Stevens and been happy to do it. I know this because when he was in Washington I literally hated him. Then I had the joy to actually watch him and fell in love with his style and talent. He was only as dirty as any defenseman of that caliber in that era. He was an asshole when Washington and New Jersey turned him into a wrecking ball either through their coaching or just his maturing into it. Stevens was one of the best on the ice period.

I’m Devils fan, but I feel we shouldn’t glorify people like Scott Stevens. Yes, he was a great player, but he was a great player for a time long since gone. The reality is players like him don’t belong on the league anymore. Knowing what we now know about CTE, this style of play is unthinkable, and downright dangerous. Also, no one wants to see their favorite, star player get absolutely destroyed by a career ending hit. Scott Stevens’ legacy is a relic of the past, and should stay that way.

@opiumroz-955 There is more high-end skill in the game now than ever. Pretty much every defenceman that plays a top 4 roll is an above average skater, capable of moving the puck and producing offensively while being defensively responsible. I'm 38 and there are certainly elements of 90's and early 2000's era hockey that I miss. But the dead puck era with the left wing lock almost killed the game. I'm not sure what games you're watching to suggest that players were more skilled 20 years ago than they are today. That's not really true of any sport simply because of the way these athletes train and treat their bodies today.
